4 stars because it does work and it is compact. Make sure you point it in the right direction else it will just fold over. Mine broke but I had a very very large surf rod on it. I recommend this for medium action tackle or less

Not sturdy

Broke after placing in a hard bank with lots of gravel and catching two eater sized channel cats. Definitely not a sturdy rod holder for big catfish. Might be great for fishing crappie with live bait from a sandy or muddy bank. The spike is kind of thinner gauge sheet metal. Does not hold up to a heavy rod with tight lines on a bottom rig and a >1oz weight. No good for surf fishing either. Spike is too short to stay up in very soft dry sand. Pretty much only suitable for soft banks, lighter rods and bobber fishing for smaller fish, say maybe under a couple of pounds.

Perfect.

As you can see in the photos the rods are alined with the angle that i left the rod holder. They are perfect. They are sturdy and do the job. Now you can still break them if your not carful but youd be have to be a brut while using them because of rocks or just putting your weight into it. But they are very good honestly everytime i go fishing i notice that my rod holders are the best ones there.

Fairly good...

The plastic upper portions is attached to the metal stake with what I think is a rivet with a button head on one end and a press to fit hollow shaft. Without using it I can tell that the metal spade is too thin and will bend if any resistance is encountered while pushing it into the ground. Also, the second weakest point is the pivot point. I can see that this will be the breaking point of the holder if a significant amount of force is used (i.e. a large fish bending the rod sharply). I'm not saying it is flimsy,.. I'm saying that you get what you pay for and if it lasts more than one season you've gotten your money's worth out of it. It is compact when folded, but I will probably drill out the rivet and put a machine screw and acorn-style nut on it.

Flimsy construction

I like that the item is relatively inexpensive. However, you get what you pay for. The metal portion bends easily when sticking in the ground/compact sand. I had one snap at the joint where the metal and plastic meet.

Folds over during use

The concept of having a small highly pack a bowl and a portable stand is excellent however it folds over rather easily and has limited use for my style of fishing

More LED's

As good as I thought it would be. I have a larger pole than most dudes but it slipped right in nicely. I would suggest a locking mechanism to hold it open/closed and something to restrain my rod from exploding out the end as soon as my worm is swallowed by big Bertha. Also maybe some LED's for the scooter crowd

Looks like what I was looking for.

Love this rod holder because it folds up nicely to be put in a tackle bag or box. And, did not break the bank, when I bought two.
