Slow but effective

I ordered this unit because I didn't want to spend a lot of money on an electric model. I had my doubts after reading the reviews but thought I would give it a shot. At first I was ready to pack it up and send it back but then when I had my positioning right it worked like a charm, slowly it drained (it was only March in NY so what was my hurry). I had no trouble with the unit floating, it sank below the water, just as it should. The problem I had was, I was holding the tubing up too high, trying to get it even with the edge of the pool (the illustration seemed to suggest this was the thing to do). After pumping for a while and not getting the water to make it's way over the edge of the pool, I hung it on a lower rung of the pool ladder and walked away for a few minutes. When I came back, I just started pumping it again while it was hanging low and it worked but when I tried to bring it up higher again it stopped. So, I got it running, left it hung on the ladder and left it overnight. The next morning the water was gone. I admit, if I had not had the patience, I would have sent this back however, I'm glad I didn't. It was an inexpensive way to clear the water off my pool cover.

Very serviceable and adequate for the task

I'd rate this about 3-1/4 stars. Give it points for the wide, flat, weighted base and general effectiveness as a drain. The base has multiple small holes so it doesn't get stopped up with leaves. Hose length included is sufficient. The plastic siphon pump is frail and useless. However, when used as a drain it's very adequate for the task. Recommended. Two caveats: 1) Start the siphon the old-fashioned way, by sucking the water part way into the hose, as the plastic priming pump simply doesn't work well AND tends to come loose (just toss it). 2) The weighted base could be a bit heavier; it floats up sometimes. However, place a 1 gallon weighted bottle (say, an empty pool shock bottle filled with sand) on it and it sets down perfectly. I found that it works a bit better when placed upside-down. I bought two of these and once primed, they can drain my entire pool cover (33x18) in a few hours. At this price (<$14), I would buy this item again simply for the nice weighted drain base and drain hose attachment. It works well enough as is.

EXCELLENT PRODUCT!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND! Two light squeezes of the siphon bulb and the rain water that had accumulated on my pool cover during a recent rainstorm immediately started running through the hoses. Zero effort! Worth every penny ????????

Perfect for removing water from pool cover

It works, but...

The unit works as advertised but here are my comments; It's heavy enough to stay submerged at the bottom of any collected rainwater and the drain hose is long enough to reach over the side of my twenty-one foot diameter above ground pool. However the drain hose is made of very thin material and tends to collapse when you're trying to use the hand pump to start the draining process. It is a very slow process but it drained all the water from my cover. I went to Home Depot and bought twenty feet of half-inch I.D. vinyl tubing (about $7). The tubing wall is a lot thicker and does not collapse during draining. When I used the hand pump with this new tubing, I could not create enough vacuum to pull the water up over the pool walls and get it flowing. Instead, I used my mouth to get it started and it worked fine from there.

Not bad for the price, works with some modification

The hand pump was pretty worthless, it was difficult to get the siphon started. I ended up disconnecting the hand pump and I start the siphon the old fashioned way. The best part of this unit is the plastic drain. It works well on the top of the cover but its density is less than the water so it floats on the surface. I strapped some weights to it so it will sink to the bottom of the water on the cover. Overall, it gets the job done even if it doesn't work quite as I had expected.

Works great, great price

Tastes great less filling, just about sums it up. I bought this item to replace a similar one bought 5 years ago locally that had finally started to fall apart. All the local pool shops wanted from 30 to 40 dollars for similar products and one place, a supposed discount pool store, wanted 30 dollars for this exact item. Don't understand the negative reviews here. Yeah it took a minute or so for the air to run out of the central part the first time it was placed in the water but it did eventually sink and stays at the bottom of any standing water without a problem. And the other complaint about the weak suction on the bulb I don't get either, yeah it needs a good deal of pumping the first time you use it when the line is filled with air but during subsequent uses when there is already water in the line it only takes one or two squeezes to get it going again. Great product. just leave on the cover all winter and whenever there is standing water on the cover just walk by and give the bulb a few pumps and the water will be gone in an hour or so.
