It works
The thing you need to know. You have to take your time when painting with this. And to have the finished result you may need to do it about 5 to 6 times. That's how many times I had to paint it to get a real blackboard finish and feel. I waited each time I painted for it to dry completely before going over it again with the next layer of paint. At first, I wasn't sure I would have enough paint but I did. I was creating a wallboard to use when teaching piano to my daughter and also to use for my now 2 yr baby numbers and letters lesson. The size of the board is about 24" x 40 and Paintworks. The only thing is I think it should have been a little cheeper seeing that its only 8 oz but its not bad at $11.

Like A Chalk Board - But Not Quite
I bought one jar of the green chalkboard paint so I could turn one of my masonite drawing boards into a chalk board. It took three coats of this paint to be acceptable, and I'm still thinking a fourth coat may improve the quality. I am also balancing that thought with my anticipated low-volume use of the chalk board - is it worth my effort? Covering the board with a coat of paint takes only a few minutes, but the jar says you need to let the paint cure for 24 hours before using the board. As it stands, I have about enough paint left to make a second chalk board if I want... Not sure I need a second board for myself, but it might make a nice gift for the grandkids... Since my board is a little less than 4 square feet per side, this jar was more than sufficient to cover the one side intended for use with chalk. I can still use the other side of the board as a support for my drawing paper. Experimentation this morning - which is actually before the 24 hours curing time for the paint is done - has shown that I will be able to draw/write and erase as necessary. Small amounts of the paint did wipe off as I wiped off the border lines that I had drawn; maybe that will change after the paint has fully cured. And it will have plenty of time to cure, as I plan to paint some decorative borders around the edges of the board with other acrylic paint, and those two colors will also need time to cure before I use the board much. So... the quality of the paint is acceptable on a porous surface such as masonite or other wood products. The texture is nothing like a good slate chalkboard - so don't expect that level of quality. For the cost and labor involved, this paint is a very nice substitute if you want a chalk board and cannot afford a decent-sized slate board... however, I would not expect the paint to last a lifetime as I would expect of a good slate. Update: 20 hours after the third coat, I decided that yet another coat of paint on my new chalkboard was a good idea. After 4 coats of paint, I am much more pleased with the writing surface. 24 hours after the 4th coat, I conditioned my new chalk board with a layer of chalk over the entire surface as instructed on the label. After wiping off the chalk, it very much resembles the appearance of a slate chalkboard, if not the texture. This will be quite suitable for my purposes.

Useful and works as expected
It all depends on the surface weather you will make a great chalkboard or not but the paint does what it should

Works like it should, but kind of expensive
Why is chalkboard paint so expensive? $1 per ounce is a bit pricey and why we gave it only 4 stars. It is essentially just black acryllic paint. It says so right on the jar. I would bet you couldn't tell the difference between this paint and normal black acryllic paint. Anyway, this small jar actually went further than we thought it would. We did a coffee table project 50" by 16" and we still have almost half the jar left. We followed the instructions to the T, using one light coat at first, then a heavy second coat. The end result looks like a chalkboard. You can easily write on it just like a chalkboard. The main thing with this chalkboard piant, or any paint is: The key to a great looking finished product is the type of surface you start with, and how smooth it is. Any imperfections will me magnified once painted with black paint. (See pictures). If you're working with a wood surface, sand it as smooth as you possibly can, if you want a clean looking smooth chalkboard finish. Also an unpainted or unsealed wood surface will absorb more of the chalkboard paint, and will require more paint to completely cover. Maybe try sanding perfectly smooth, then painting with a cheaper paint, before applying the chalkboard paint. Whatever you decide, this paint will definitely transform your surface in to a chalkboard like surface, but probably no more than any black acryllic paint. The key is to condition the surface with chalk, once the paint has cured.

Awesome - Couldn't Be Happier!
After reading all of the positive reviews I went ahead and made the purchase and am incredibly pleased with the results. Do not be fooled by the price - this stuff is great! As advised, I sanded the area of the wall I where I was going to apply the paint beforehand to make the surface as even as possible. I didn't go crazy - just manually rubbed one coarse and one less coarse 1/2 sheets of sand paper across the wall just made sure it was smooth enough to run my hand along without feeling any obvious roughness. I was a bit concerned that the first coat still left some visible signs of the white wall but this was no longer the case after the 2nd coat. Since the area I was painting wasn't very large (54" x 22") I went ahead and applied 4 coats total with probably enough for a 5th that I opted not to do because it seemed unnecessary. As mentioned in one review - it does have a very slight glossiness to it (which I wanted) so please be advised if you are looking for something that has a slate/matte finish this may not the product for you. After applying the 4 coats I let it "cure" for just about 24 hours and did a test without conditioning it (rubbing chalk over the entire area) just to see how well it worked without it as I was feeling kinda lazy. Lol. And much to my delight it exceeded all of my expectations - could it be this good for 7 bucks!? Both writing and erasing with a dry cloth was a TOTAL PINCH! Yay - I couldn't be happier. I love it when this happens! Best of luck!

Good product, but quite expensive
The paint is of a good quality and dries quite fast. I used it on a wooden surface painted with Duco, and it is working quite well on that. I applied 2 coats of paint, a few hours apart and let it dry for half a day. Then rubbed chalk all over to condition it, and began using as a chalkboard. Just do not use sharp edges on it because the paint can peel off if you do that. However I would consider it quite pricey, and I hope similar cheaper alternatives are available locally in India soon.
