So much better than a "d-ring" leash.

I prefer this leash over the Petsmart brand because it has a "claw-type" closure vs. the "d-ring" you get with Petsmart brand. This leash clips on the harness with two prongs that overlap and meet in the middle, instead of that d-ring setup most of us are used to from car keys, which we ALL know can get stuck open without you realizing and then "poof" - dog gone. I started out with this type of leash and then bought a Petsmart brand (I was trying to get my Shiba a pink outfit, lol) and I HATED it. This is awesome. It's so much more secure because the claws half overlap each other and there's not much chance of it letting go. Living downtown and encountering dogs, squirrels, ducks (we live near a lagoon) and OMG PEOPLE WITH FOOD this is a Godsend! Never switching again!

Nice leash. Has a lock on the snap part, for those of you who have runaway dogs. However, I found that feature a bit hard to get used to. Kept leash as it matches my dog's harness. May be tough to work with arthritic hands though!

If the dog pulls at a 45 degree angle and twists it's head it will become unclipped.

Last month I bought this leash in Petco when I purchased the matching Petmate harness. Today I needed to replace the harness, because my dog chewed it up. (No fault of the harness, just a dog who thinks everything is a toy) I went to Amazon where I found the same Petmate harness for half the price I paid Petco. It made me wonder if I could have gotten the leash cheaper as well. Looked up the leash and I was surprised to see it had several bad reviews concerning dogs becoming unclipped. My first instinct was to assume the clip was worn out and the person used the leash anyway. But stories of dogs becoming unclipped got me concerned (especially the one that got hit by a car). I decided to check out my leash which was still brand new. I clipped it to my key ring to fact check this claim. I found that if the key ring was pulled at a 45 degree angle and there was a slight twist I could in fact pull the keys free from the clip! This did not take a lot of effort at all. I read someone mention the dog bolting which might make people assume it happens under a lot of force. Nope, if the dog simply pulls at a 45 degree angle and twists it's head it will become unclipped. I'm planing to keep the leash and replace the clip with a conventional type.

LOCK BROKE WITHIN 30 SECONDS AND MY DOG ESCAPED

These are some of the worst leashes on the market right now! My bloodhound Lucas got loose saturday as the lock broke just after putting it on for the first time. Luckily nothing bad happened. It was a parking lot, and yes it was scary being so near to a street with running cars. I just got my $20.56 credited into my account. Had something happened to him the cost would have been invaluable to me. Upgraded Catch

The Petmate leash I received has a different catch from what is pictured in the listing on Amazon, I'm assuming that's because of issues with a previous iteration of this leash. Overall the leash appears to be good quality and I'm hoping to use it for many years.
