Sterling's "washerless" design is a pain so be careful - no directions given here
I'm redoing my review as I have more experience. Long story short, BE VERY CAREFUL. Even if you've replaced normal shower stems that have the little washer in the end, you don't know what you're in for with these Sterling "washerless" stems and seats. I found out the hard way when I tried to be a good boy and fix the shower faucet at my mother's house 10 years ago or so. I used the plumbing socket to remove the stem and when I saw none of my washers would work, decided to put everything back but it would not fit right and then CRACK! the little plastic end was so brittle that it just cracked and then there was no way to shut off the water without shutting off the whole house. I had to run to 3 different stores and found the only Sterling stem they had which was not the right style and required me to jerry rig the handle and cover. So over the following years I was looking for the "right" stem and bought one that was too short (will keep for the o-ring and seat) and one that was just the right size. To be honest, I'm not sure which one this was - I want to say it was the right size. So yesterday, I finally got around to replacing the one that I had put in after the above mentioned incident, but even after years of thinking about it, I still was not 100% sure how it went. Does the orientation of the seat matter? I tried to match the hole in the brass part of the shower but then I was wondering whether I had to take out the o-ring in stem and put the spring behind it and if so, which way did the o-ring go? If the spring is required, why didn't they already put the spring in it? I decided to use the spring which made it harder to put in because it almost fell into the wall once and miracle of miracles, everything works and no leak. I just wish they would spend 2 cents and print a little diagram of how it's supposed to be assembled in the package. the photo of it on here was a big help but the question of the spring is still open because the original one popped out before I could see where it went and I had to make an educated guess. I mean let's face it, most of us aren't experienced plumbers here and this is a rare design.

I’m glad I found it on amazon. Ordered next day delivery. Came packaged well. Took the old ones out. Put these in. Turned water on. No leaks! I replaced both of my valve spigots. Exact replacement. Solid brass. The plastic threaded piece didn’t come with it but it’s not supposed to. I took the ones off the old ones and they worked perfectly. Easy 10 minute job:) hopefully they last 30 years like the old ones.
