New Life for my 2011 Craftsman

The planetary gears gave out, and I like having working steering levers (I don't have muscle to be pushing and popping wheelies to turn machine) so the more expensive drive is necessary. Works the same as the one from Sears for almost $200 more. Suggestion: Get the little bearings (about 25 bucks for a pair) that go in the housing and that the bar on this drive fits into -- had no idea how completely trashed mine were until I took off the wheels to replace the drive...could well be these bearings bit the dust and THEN the looseness caused strain on the drive. I will be removing wheels to check these each fall now during my routine, pre-season maintenance.

Lubricate before Installing

Before installing the MTD Hexagonal Planetary Shaft Assembly (PN: 918-04322A), I decided to disassemble the two planetary gear sets and check lubrication. Good thing. The grease in both had hardened to the point where chunks of it fell out when I tapped the ring gear on the top of my workbench. I cleaned and lubricated all the planetary bearings and gears, reassembled and installed the entire assembly. Snow thrower works like new. Although, shouldn't have to perform maintenance on a new item as soon as it comes out of the box. I'm guessing it's been sitting on a shelf for a very long time.
