Must have if you sharpen your blades.
I had used one of the little cones before and they are alright, this is entirely different. I got one of the RBG-712 sharpeners and this is so accurate you can count the passes on each side of the blade and usually if you do one extra on either side you will have to go back and match it to get the blade in balance. I had been stacking up blades the last couple of years so I had a pile of blades to try this out on right away.

This is a great unit But Pricey.
The unit works GREAT and it is very touchy when it come to being right. But when you get it right you never feel any shaking in mower handle at all. very nice little toy but it is pricey.

props to mkd
like mkd, I also found mine to be out of balance and used rivet washers and electrical ring terminals (with the end cut off) to balance mine, taking washers off the bottom and adding them to the top after spinning and determining the heavy side. the ring terminals are twice as heavy as the rivet washers and half as thin which came in handy on at least one magnet stud. after an hour of balancing the balancer it now spins and stops in random spots. little bit irritating at this price point.... come on Italy! take pride in something other than pizza!

Made it even better with a bit of effort!.........Oregon Brand very accurate after fine tuning.
Item arrived same day it was ordered and balancer came double boxed and bubble wrapped so it did not have any damage from shipping. I soaked the two bearings in 91% rubbing alcohol and then lubricated them with three and one ptfe, cleaned the internal bore and the sliding parts, and reassembled everything. Spindle rotation now spun freely however the spindle was out of balance and the heavy side stopped repeatedly to the bottom. to balance the bare spindle with no blade i put 2 small aluminum rivet washers from Lowes on each shaft that holds the magnets to the aluminum mounting plate. Washers were placed on the threaded bolts on the back side of mounting plate and the magnet bolts were long enough for at least a couple washers if needed. Was able to file sides off the washers to make small weight adjustments. I added 2 aluminum washers to all the magnet bolts and then filed or subtracted washers to balance the bare spindle. I was able to get it precise enough that the assembly would stop at different locations when it was spun and not creep backwards from any imbalance as it was rotated by hand slowly . Mounted it to my overhead storage rack next to my tool box with a 1" by 2" birch board. The design is so i can remove the top two bolts and store the balancer and the wood mounting bracket in my home office out of the dust and grime of the gargage and out of the humid conditions of Florida. Using the balancer today i did put a small index center punch mark at one spot between the magnets to index the spindle to 12 oclock when mounting the blades. the blade centering bearing housing does rotate inside the aluminum magnet housing so it will vary somewhat.Balancer is very accurate and i found that if i could get the blade to balance between the 2 to 4 oclock position it was close enough. both sets of double blades for my honda hrx (two blades stacked for mulching and cutting) were out of balance enough to hang vertically at the 12 - 6 oclock position. This tool out of the box does a very good job and if you take the time to balance the bare spindle it will be more accurate than most people have the patience to balance their blades to. one final note! All the literature was Oregon Branding ,including the instructions. However the product was made in Italy. Tecomec i am guessing.

Simple Easy way to balance!
I used to use a nail on the wall. Major upgrade. This unit is quality built. Powerful magnets hold the blade and makes balancing easy and precise.

An excellent tool if you care about optimal performance and longevity of your mower(s).
Short version: This tool is well made, it's easy to use and it takes the guess work out of balancing a mower blade. Long version: I have a Land Pride mower deck that I run on a Kubota tractor as well as a walk behind Honda mulching mower. That's 5 blades in all that need to be sharpened and balanced at least once a year! Mower decks cost thousands of dollars and have expensive bearings and gear boxes, and a good walk behind isn't cheap either at $500 +. A balanced blade or blades is important for any mower, and this tool helps to keep them working at their best while reducing possible future maintenance or repair. As the photos show, all three blades on this mid-mount mower deck are nicely balanced after sharpening. The instructions allow for a maximum of 15 degrees past horizontal to consider the blade balanced, but it's easy to get the blades to within 5 degrees or less. I tried changing the position (rotation) of the blades on the bearing to see if the balance point changed but it remained constant regardless of position so I know this tool is well made. I recently purchased a rotary mower for my other bigger tractor so will have to figure out a way to use this tool for those asymmetric blades. It shouldn't be too hard to make an adapter. This tool isn't for everyone and there are certainly less elegant and cheaper ways to balance a blade, but if you want to buy an excellent balancing tool that's not made in China, a tool that does a great job of helping to balance a blade after sharpening, a tool you only have to buy once and use it for life then this is it.

What a useful bit of kit!
I regularly sharpen mower blades for a small countryside charity. What a useful tool this is. I had some difficulty understanding how it worked from the listing, but once I had it in my hands it was obvious. After mounting the tool to a wall, or on a piece of wood in a vise, you place the mounting hole of the blade on the cone, then bring the magnet ring forward to keep it in place. You then turn the blade to the horizontal position and let go - the heavy end falls to the bottom. It is amazingly sensitive in use. Quite expensive, but well worth it if you have a number of blades to sharpen.

Excellent Product and Excellent Value
I was surprised when I open the package at how big it was. Beautifully made and of high quality. The rotation of the bearing is very smooth and very precise. I set to work mounting it correctly on its vertical plane and got to work testing and correcting the balance of a brand new set of blades. I purchased Genuine Parts blades for my Husqvarna and was surprised to see how much out of balance they were. Never assume new blades are good from the factory. They may be new, but they are NOT balanced. This is where you need a quality balancing tool like this. It is the best value, quality and price point for anyone who owns and operates ride on or zero turns. It is a must have. Forget those cheap and nasty cheap knock offs. This is the real deal. I love the way it looks, functions and it gets the job done. I balanced all three blades well within the 15 degree allowable deflection. My blades were practically 180 degree flat across after I had finished balancing. Thank you Oregon for a great tool. It will serve me very well for a very long time. I highly recommend this.

THE ABSOLUTE BEST
Save your money and do not buy the cheap, gimmicky blade balancing devices that are simply not very accurate. Let me start by saying that I have no connection or affiliation with this seller or product. I'm so glad I spent the money and bought this quality made, precision piece of equipment. It's super easy to set up and use. It's EXTREMELY sensitive and will give you a true gage as to the balance of your blades. I received the item quickly. It was very well packaged and I highly recommend this seller and product.

Wobbley Head !
I must have gotten a defected one or someones return , I only got to use it recently on 2 new blades for a 38" deck Lawn Tractor and I scrapped both blades bcuz of false balancing ... My center cone is discolored as if its got wear on it and the 2 mounting holes were already scratched as if it was previously installed ....... What pisses me off mostly is the loose bearing on it plus cone from outer alum housing has too much slack which doesn't allow blade to properly balance ......
