it works but....

when i first received it i checked to make sure the thing actually returned so i gave it a couple small pulls before installing and thought ok good it works. well once installed and pulled it completely it jammed on me. little ticked off i took it back off and inspected it, poor design made things rub a little when they shouldnt, so i lubed it up with wd-40, worked much better but not perfect. i installed it and have used it a few times on my mower and seems to be getting better with use. still sticks a little if i pull it all the way out but most the time it works ok. cant complain to much and hope it will get better with time. but be prepared to use something to get it to retract the first few times you use it unless your machine starts the first pull in which case the vibration of a running motor is sufficient to make the spool retract. edit, with continued use seems to be getting better, hardly sticks anymore.

Pull Start

Wonderful replacement for the old one. If you need a new pull start consider this rather than fussing with retying the handle.

Item not as pictured

The starter did not come as pictured, the pull handle was either missing or not included with the starter however there was no mention of this in the item description. As pictured in the Amazon item write up the starter clearly has the pull handle attached. The starter worked fine after I bought a new handle at my local hardware store and attached it.

The Oregon Tecumseh Recoil Starter 31-050

The Oregon Tecumseh Recoil Starter is a very good starter and fits perfectly on all 3 to 7 hp. tecumseh lawn mowers. It has good recoil and the rope is very strong too. When installing the starter put a good knot in the starter handle and i kept a knot close to where the starter rope enters the starter. If the rope breaks you wont have to remove the starter. The rope is shorter than the original equipment so dont mount the rope to the handle bars or it will break pretty quick and you can damage the starter spring too. The starter if installed properly will last a long while!

I thougt the product was of low quality. On the first pull of the rope the handle came off. The rope was too short for the application, when it was listed for a direct replacement.

Broke after 8 uses

Used on a Craftsman 'easy start' 5hp push mower. Original owner. The original unit lasted 2 years. The rope broke after 1.5 years, which I fixed myself, but just this year the recoil spring mechanism failed, requiring me to replace the entire recoil starter since the original unit is non-rebuildable. I bought this Oregon recoil starter since it was the only one on Amazon that matched the PN's in my repair manual (PN 590694). The unit seemed to be similar to the original, but is apparently not made to last. It broke yesterday, after my 8th mow. The rope broke inside the starter. I will attempt to take it apart and repair the rope. I was hoping for at least a year or two of use before failure. I understand these aren't meant to last a long time, but 2 months is absurd. I guess my advice to others would be to look for an alternate brand, possibly outside of Amazon, since there aren't any other options here.
