Light rod but maybe only for light grade fish.
I wanted to like it, but in short the 3rd segment of the 5 piece pole broke after one use at a lake when retrieving my second cast to just check if my bait was still on the hook. No fish, just the resistance from a 1/2oz egg weight being pulled thru some light weeds (not snagged mind you), was enough to break one of the segments. There is no way the pole could have managed to pull in a trout over 1lb (maybe even 1/2lb fish may have snapped it). The break was in the middle of the rod segment and not at the at one of the joining points. I know and love Okuma rods so I have to assume my pole was defective, unfortunately I was not able to use it until a few days past the standard 30day Amazon return policy. If anyone from Okuma is out there I would love a replacement and am willing to review the pole again if someone can replace my defective pole. As for the reel and carrying case. The case is a nice foam padded carrying case. It has extra space for some small tackle. Overall a good if you want to keep the pole in your trunk yet have it protected from random junk people toss in their trunk. I would have appreciated a cloth sleeve to hold the 5 piece pole and reel so it can be more compact to tuck away in a corner of the trunk. The reel was very smooth and seemed like durability would not be an issue. My experience was nowhere close to what other reviewers posted so hopefully I can give everyone a updated review if my rod is replaced. **** Update 8/29/22 Since the default Amazon return options had expired I had to google a live support number for Amazon. I got thru and they were really helpful to process a return for me 2 weeks past the return date. Gotta love Amazon. I am updating my review from 1star to 4stars since Amazon and Okuma took care of the problem for me. Since I still believe in the Okuma name I think the rod is still worth buying, but I would advise for any buyers to test the product within 30days of buying it. And since it is a light travel rod, be cautious on how hard you real or allow the rod to bend if you hook a lunker. - Tight Lines

Decent portability for a full length rod
If portability is important to you, then this is one of the best rods to get. The Okuma is, instead of telescoping, a series of pieces that are fitted together tightly through pressure. This system works great and I already caught some fish with a friend's VS-605-20 recently. I liked it so much I just ordered my own. First off, there are several portable options out there with varying degrees of portability and usability and flexbility. For the hardcore emergency bug-out bag fishing tool packer, a fishing line on a plastic frame works just fine. For the traveler who wants a little more, the Ronco portable is great (I plan to get one). But for a little fun with your fishing, these may leave a little something to be desired. The Ronco in particular has the line built in, so you can't play with different test lines. On the higher quality line, there are two piece rods that break down nice and easy, telescoping rods which are great because you don't lose pieces easily when casting, and three models of these break-apart rods. The Daiwa version seemed pretty good and is price competitive with this rod, and there is one more that is slightly higher priced. As portable as this fishing rod is, it is certainly not designed for a bug-out bag and is of a pretty decent size. Having said that, it is a full sized rod that breaks down small enough to fit in the nylon (cheapish nylon, but still good) case and that means pretty easy packing into luggage or a backpack if it's not fully loaded. Speaking of the cheapish nylon case, I would certainly be happier if the case was made of better material, but frankly, they did a good job in features to price, so can't complain. And the 137 piece tackle box fits in there as is since the bag is loose around the foam inserts. The friend's unit that I borrowed worked pretty well, and I found none of the issues that were mentioned in other reviews. I caught a few fish that day, and didn't have to tighten the rods at all, despite several casts over a two hour period. Now that I received my own, I test cast a few times in my yard and found no slippage either, so it doesn't really come apart the way some folks have said. All in all, I'm really happy with this purchase. I may get a Ronco to keep in my bugout bag but for car camping trips with lakes and hiking nearby, this is a great piece to have along. Compact, decent tackle box, and full rod casting fun off a row boat on a lake. Can't ask for more than that.

It works!
I'm brand new to fishing, so I can't compare this to other rods. But when I decided to try my hand at fishing on a recent camping trip, I bought this rod, and was ultimately successful in catching fish. It can be intimidating trying to learn how to fish in today's age of limitless youtube videos and online articles, and there is an overwhelming array of vocabulary that makes it hard to understand what they're even talking about! But here's what put fish on my table while camping at high-mountain lakes stocked with trout: I got a spool of 2 lb monofilament line, a set of swivels, and a handful of spinners advertised to be "irresistible" to trout. I researched how to install the line on the reel, set the tension, tie the swivels, cast, and fish with the spinners. I also got a set of fishing pliers and a fillet knife, hoping I would actually catch some fish. And of course a fishing license! I hooked my shirt more times than I hooked fish, but I had a ton of fun learning how to catch fish, and can confirm that fresh-caught trout makes one heck of a rewarding meal at camp! UPDATE: After a few more fishing trips, I learned from other fishermen/women that apparently I had the handle on the wrong side of the spool and was holding the rod upside down. Apparently you should have the spool and guide loops oriented beneath the rod, not facing up towards yourself. I don't think it makes a huge difference, but switching the orientation means you have to switch the direction of cranking to reel in the line... If you're brand new to fishing, make sure to orient the spool and handle correctly the first time, before you start building muscle memory! Also, make sure to check that the rod is snuggly assembled once every several casts. Otherwise you'll eventually heave the upper segments of the rod into the lake, then you'll have to frantically reel it back while hoping that nobody else saw your blunder.

Nice kit for the money
Just came back from a trip to British Columbia where I brought this rod to fish a bit. Very neat little bag, small and light, very portable. The reel is good also, nothing to complaint. The only negative point I have is the action on the rod, which is pretty stiff and you don't feel much of what's happening at the end. But I guess for a 5 piece rod and for that price it's the best you get. Overall very happy that I can fish in my travels.

So far so good. Still spinnin'
I ordered this travel rod to take with me to Cuba. While I wasn't landing the fish, the rod did hold up well. The case it comes with is a nice for travel. I actually saw another guy with the exact same rod down there also. He was landing them with the help of some locals off Sercotel Experience on Cayo Las Brujas - Jaks. For the price, I believe this is a sufficient travel rod. You could pay much more and possibly not get the same quality. Okuma is a known brand and you can expect a decent quality. That said, it is still a travel rod and like anything, you get what you pay for. It's a nice fun cheap way to do some shore fishing on you own while down on vacation and save the price of an expensive charter.

I recommend 6-8lb line on the reel
These are the rods if you are backpacking anywhere...or just going down to the river and don't want a big rod banging around in your vehicle. I've caught dozens of 2-4 lb brook and rainbow trout on them, lots of walleye, some big pike, a few 6-8lb salmon and recently this year a 13.5lb salmon in a fast river. It handles just about anything if you stay off the greatlakes! I recommend 6-8lb line on the reel. Real is decent too, it'll last 2 years or so with the high frequency I fish, much more with "average" fishing time. BUY BUY BUY!!! These things are all you need and they are inexpensive! Seriously though. I can't praise this underrated rod and reel pack combo enough.

compact unit ghat travels well
4-6 lb test line & keep it in the truck for when your driving along & see a nice trout water, takes minutes to set up & then your away. Ive managed to pack several extra tackle neatly into the case so its all I need to have some quick casting.

Put some nice light line on it and even small trout were ...
Must have brought in close to 100 cutties with this rig during the past 7 days outing. Outstanding performace - never once did it come apart. Put some nice light line on it and even small trout were a blast to bring in tearing line of this reel. Cork handles are nice. At first I thought it felt a little cheap but after using it on so many fish, including a couple 2-3 lb trout I'm in love with this new rig. Would buy another in a heartbeat.
