HDPE still has advantages over Tritan

Quick summary - I love it. This HDPE Nalgene is the classic white, translucent plastic from the 90s. Tritan is the very common, clear hard plastic that replaced the Lexan bottles that you see the most today. Check the pros and cons to see if HDPE or Tritan work better for you. Bottom line on top: Get HDPE if: You're using it for water, want to minimize weight and have the best durability. Get Tritan if: You use it for juice/sports drinks/protein shakes, hot liquids, and bottle weight is not a concern. HDPE Pros: + Absolute winner on weight and drop durability. HDPE is solid, it doesn't squish at all, but it is technically softer than Tritan. The upside to that is that if you drop it, it flexes and won't crack as easily as more rigid Tritan. + A little bit smaller. Might be a con for some people, but I think it's great. It's just slightly more compact. + Proven safety. HDPE has been around for decades in lab and food safety and the industry has a ton of data and experience with it. We're really, really sure this plastic is safe. I have no concerns about Tritan either but we don't have as much time with it as HDPE. HDPE Cons: - Slight odor when you first get it. Wash it with warm, soapy water and leave the cap open. The smell will fade and you won't ever notice it again. - Lower melting point. You can put boiling water into this but you'll feel the bottle start to go slightly soft. Tritan has a much higher melting point and stays firm. - Retains more odors than Tritan. If you're mixing sports drinks or protein shakes, those slight odors can linger slightly even after washing. You'll have to use baking soda to get them out. I wouldn't put hot coffee into an HDPE bottle. Tritan isn't perfect but does much better. - More prone to staining. I wouldn't put tomato juice or marinara sauce in HDPE. For folks who want more detailed info on dimensions and weight: Height: HDPE (8 inches), Tritan (8.5 inches) Diameter: HDPE (3.44 inches), Tritan diameter (3.5 inches) Weight with cap (grams): HDPE (110 grams), Tritan (180 grams)

Quality Water Bottle

I recently purchased a Nalgene water bottle and I have to say, I am thoroughly impressed with its performance. The bottle is made from high-quality materials and is incredibly durable, so I know it will last for a long time. One of the things I love about this bottle is that it is leak-proof. Perfect water bottle for hiking, camping

The wide mouth makes it easy to get a lot of water quickly, and they’re easy to scrub the inside unlike some narrow water bottles. I only use it for water, I wouldn’t put other beverages in it. I’ve never gotten a strange taste or anything from the plastic. The cap screws on tight and I’ve never had any leaks, and the cap leash works as a good finger loop for carrying it around.

A Simple No Frills Water Bottle

These Nalgene HDPE water bottles are virtually unchanged from the 1000ml HDPE laboratory chemical flasks Nalgene made before selling consumer water bottles. This is a GOOD thing. There is nothing flashy about a Nalgene water bottle, there are no, spouts, straws, pop-up lids, or "sippy" mouthpieces, no double walled vacuum pocket to leak down and fail, no odd shaped lid to lose. It is simply a container. A container for storing liquids. Made from nearly indestructible scientific grade plastic, with a large screw down lid designed to seal with no additional gaskets that could fail, retained on a little strap so it can never be misplaced. It is the best water bottle ever made.

Better than the hard plastic Nalgene version

Virtually indestructible. The hard plastic bottles can crack if they're subjected to an impact. I've used these for years, and recently bought another after losing my old one. The flexible plastic is incredibly durable, and the lid seals reliably. Great for freezing water prior to hiking. Fill it halfway and freeze. Top off with water and you've got a nice cool drink that will last for hours.

Can’t mess with the good old Nalgene. Company has done well to make plastic safer. I can’t stand the huge metal bottles. These Nalgenes are tough, reliable & classic.

Safe and healthy drinking container

I drink a couple litres of water or squash everyday and enjoy the idea of drinking from a container that doesn't leech chemicals into my drink. Exceptionally durable and rinses clean with no effort. Haven't used in dishwasher yet, but expect it to fair much better than those that shrink under high temp.

Nalgene=greatest bottle of all time

There's nothing like a good Nalgene water bottle. Unfortunately, I misplaced mine after years of use, and I had to get a new one. I decided to go with this white one because it stands out from all the other blue/grey Nalgenes everyone else has. The functionality is obviously great, but the new white colour looks good too!

Not much to go wrong with this

Absolutely bob on. Just so you know you can easily see the level of the liquid inside. The plastic is plenty transparent enough for that. Good and rigid. Little chance of leakage. The large cap is also very unlikely to get stuck on. Anybody with a Sig bottle that's ascended any significant altitude will know what I mean.

Winter hiker's classic

A hiker's classic. Allows hot water to be poured in without misshaping permanently (though be aware of the pressure vacuum being created by the heat inside cooling). Wide top so you can still drink in the freezing winter although I never managed to fully test this feature out fully in Patagonia in the winter as we only went out for the daytime and were blessed with clear weather.
