I don't understand why a plastic plug has not been made to protect the fitting where the throwaway Cylinder screws in. Take one of these, install a 1/4inch pipe plug into it and you have a heavy duty protection plug.

No valve inside.

Not like the fitting on a 1 lb throwaway bottle - this product does not have the one way valve inside. Propane will free flow if you don't have anything connected. This is a major safety hazard if anyone handles it the way you would typically handle the 1 lb bottles.

Exactly what I wanted.

In my case, I wanted something without the check valve. I made a bulk can adapter for a golf cart heater that is designed only for use with disposable cans. When everything is connected properly, trying to start the heater using a 10 foot hose takes a long time and quite a few depressions of the start button to get gas to the heater. So, what I do is unscrew the heater (while outside and away from any ignition sources) just enough to allow unrestricted gas to flow through the hose, then tighten down the heater. Disconnecting is no problem because the hose does have the check valve, although I typically close the valve on the bulk tank so the hose doesn't have any residual gas in it.

This quarter-inch to 1" adapter works perfectly for my needs, allowing my trailer propane tank to run my portable propane grill.

This does everything you'd expect, with no hassles or "oops, forgot the". Of course, it's part of an overall connectivity solution, so you still need whatever quarter-inch connector you need to connect up to your propane source, but this acts like a throw-away bottle, without the cost of those wretched (but nicely portable) bottles. So, if you have an RV or travel trailer or a big propane tank with some sort of way to attach a hose, and you want to run your small propane appliance, grill, heater, fire pit, or whatever that has a "portable throw-away propane bottle" connector, this is what you need to do propane in bulk and avoid using the bottles unless you are far from any bulk propane sources.

If you want to hook a gas heater, grill, or lantern to 20# tanks on your camper, this is the necessary connector. Good quality brass. Nicely machined. Fit my Mr. Heater perfectly. We're warm and happy not having to worry about the tiny tanks running out in the middle of the night.

To paraphrase Jack: Mr. Heater Propane Male Throwaway Cylinder Adapter 1-20 Male Throwaway Cylinder Thread X 1/4 Inch FEMALE Pipe Thread #F276140 lacks a center sealing sleeve and an o-ring: You must use this with a device that shuts off the flow of gas, like on the end of a hose attached to a 20# propane cylinder. If you forget to shut off the tank when disconnecting the appliance, you'll be in for a high-pressure surprise. Hopefully, you won't do it near an open flame like a grill or campfire! Jack is right, this product IS dangerous! However, Mr. Heater F273755 1/4" MALE Pipe Thread x 1"-20 Male Throwaway Cylinder Thread Fitting does have the center sealing sleeve and o-ring: it shuts off the flow of gas when you disconnect the appliance. I bought the F276140 thinking I wouldn't have to purchase a 1/4" female X 1/4" female adapter. WRONG! Mr. Heater dropped the ball on this one. I even went to their website before ordering to look at the description or for a better picture. The description of the product is poor, not pointing out it doesn't shut off the flow of gas when disconnected. A better picture would have sufficed: one showing the middle of the fitting with a 1/4" full flow hole in it. Amazon did me right, refunding my money and paying for return shipping since the item isn't described correctly. Amazon is great!

Threaded tank to 1/4" NPT

I purchased this to plumb in a portable grill into a 1/4" NPT line from a 20lb tank. This little piece made everything so easy as it easily connected to my two connections. I would highly recommend this for this type of use. Just note, there is no pin in this so when you disconnect your appliance you WILL have gas come out unless you first turn off at tank (or another valve) and burn off the extra fuel in the line prior to disconnecting.

Excellent Adapter

I bought this along with a Mr. Heater Male Pipe Thread fitting to fix a problem with the propane regulator on an old camp stove I have. The threads on the old regulator were stripped so I couldn't properly screw on a propane cylinder. This adapter solved the problem perfectly. It screwed in tightly (I also applied some thread locker to make sure it stays in place). Then I screwed the male pipe thread adapter into it which accepts a disposable propane cylinder and the setup works perfectly.

Adapt torh to plumbed-in application

I used this to adapt a bottle mounted torch to a plumbed-in heater application. I has no check valve so need to remember to turn off gas supply before unscrewing the torch head.
