Crows are excluded - woodpeckers are happy!
I got this to keep the crows off my more traditional suet feeder - they were relentless and would eat a brick in a couple of days! I also wanted to make sure I didn't exclude our pileated and downy woodpeckers. Read a lot of the reviews before buying this one. It works perfectly -- although it's only been one day. I have watched the pileated woodpecker reach his head and neck inside the openings and grab the suet pretty easily. The smaller downy woodpeckers do the same, but eventually get their entire body inside the outer cage and chow down. Fun to watch! Everyone is happy. The crows have checked it out and start to fly at it from both the ground and trees, but can't begin to navigate how to get their feet attached to the cage, so they just land on the ground and stare up at it. They did this for about 5 minutes then flew away completely. Yay! Seems quite sturdy too. I also like that the two suet cakes will now have protection from rain.

Attach to pole. Starlings.
I made my own attachment to facilitate putting this suet feeder on a pole, see photo. Squirrels have not climbed this pole and the feeder and pole have stood up to 70+ mile an hour winds very well. The starlings can reach the suet from outside the cage by feeding on the sides of the suet as opposed to the broader face of it. I have tried leaving the plastic casing on the suet, and putting boards inside the cage to block the sides of the suet. This works to discourage the starlings, but when the suet is a one they really want, then they will cram and distort their necks to get at it from an angle between the sides and the front and still eat away the sides of the suet.

Keeps starlings and other large birds out
I'm very pleased with the suet feeder in a cage. Since the large birds have now left our yard, I've put more suet in so the larger woodpeckers can enjoy the suet again. But the starlings and cow birds have left!

My birds love it
I had woodpeckers banging on my house constantly. I figured if I couldn't beat them, I'd feed them. I have the large red heads and the small spotted varieties and they both love this feeder. I waited 2 years to write this review because of all the nay-sayers... But I have had no issues. Once them felt comfortable with us, they had no problem climbing into the cage to eat. (The big red heads don't fit, so they reach through.) The nuthatches climb in and I even have orioles visit in the spring. After a year, some of the spotted woodpeckers started knocking on my window when it was empty and I had to poke them to get them to leave the feeder so I could take it down. If you buy the feed they want to eat and give them time, this feeder will be amazing. I also get a kick out of watching the squirrels fall out of the trees trying to get at the cakes. We'll call it a bonus. Anyway, we love it.

Solid after 2 years. Squirrel proof. My best feeder. Good-looking, highly recommend.
My best feeder. Squirrels cannot access this feeder. Attractive, keeps cake dry in rainy Pacific Northwest, allows smaller birds like bushtits, chickadees, nuthatches — and Northern Flickers and Downy Woodpeckers can use it in a pinch. I’ve not had sparrows try it probably because I have a tube feeder out as well, so no birds getting caught in mine. I also have a solid squirrel proof (baffled) fly-through feeder for the jays and crows (as well as smaller birds) and a hanging woodpecker feeder on the fence. I put cayenne flavored cakes in that one so squirrels won’t even touch it, once they learn hehe. I also put dried corncobs in a large cheap green wire hook cake feeder hanging from a dwarf maple near that back fence. The squirrels and jays enjoy that and it is fun to make them work for the high-calorie treat. Squirrels like to hang from the tree with back legs and use their arms to work the corn. So funny. Or they try to balance on it and struggle not to fall off as it swings — they don’t get too fat with too much corn like that. I did get a platform squirrel feeder and put it on the back fence to give them an easier go, but I find that they gorge on that, emptying in one day (probably also the “ground squirrels” get to it at night). So I only partially fill it with “critter crunch” on special occasions like holidays and during ice or snow. Don’t want them to become too dependent. Your best strategy is divide and conquer! Keep critter food, big bird food, and small bird food far apart. Keep fruit, corn and nuts away from the house. No fruit vines like kiwi on the house — could attract rats and squirrels to your home. Again, this is a great cake feeder! I’ve been using it for two years. Will buy another if/when this one becomes too ugly. The copper color fades and gets a bit dusty but it still looks better than most feeders. Come to think of it, it is also great protection from hawks and cats. They do stalk my yard because the birds love their treats! Small birds can safely feed inside this feeder. Hope all this helps! Learned after a few years of trial and error. Now, to find a safe solution for robins that won’t get water logged, or pilfered by rats, squirrels, crows and jays! Robins are shy and ground feeders. They like to feed near bird baths and to have the safety of bushes and trees close. If you have cats roaming in the yard they probably won’t come around. We have a neighbor black cat who loves to hang out in my yard like a jungle panther — stalk, pounce, snatch and scamper faster than you can blink an eye. So funny to see his head slowly poke up from a bush like Inspector Clouseau. So sad to sometimes hear the other birds crying desperately when he makes his mark. I guess everyone has to eat. I gave the cat owner reflective breakaway collars ($6 for 6 on Amazon!) and they seem to help if he has one on... Well hope you enjoyed the report from the flower jungle and adjacent small wood...

Keeps squirrels away !!
It is great for keeping squirrels away , but it is a difficult task at times for a bird to get inside the cage for the suet ..small birds do but it took them about a month to get brave enough to try ...it is well made and worth the money.

Still early
So far no squirrels or starlings have gotten to the suet but the other birds haven’t warmed up to it yet

Top Handle
This is my second purchase. It does keep squirrels away although they keep trying. My issue is the screw top opening. It breaks off. Not just mine but also a friend’s.
