OK but Awkward
I have a fireplace insert that I burn for heat all winter long. About once a week I have to empty the built up hot ashes in it and start over. This can create a big mess of ash dust everywhere. I have tried a lot of things to solve this problem including ash cans with lids, a towel over the bucket as I put the ashes in etc. etc. I thought this was a good idea and I looked at this one (about $37 with tax) and the Ash Dragon which is about $80. Both seemed like a lot of money since the metal dust pan I have been using is only about $7 at Smart and Final but I decided to try this one. On the plus side: 1. The metal of the ash box itself seems sturdy enough. 2. The shape about 3 inches high and 12 inches wide is a good size and shape for most wood stoves, fireplaces ans inserts. 3. With the lid open the height is about 6 inches but that is towards the back of the box so that also works and it has a little wood handle for closing the lid when its full. Also good. 4. The size minimizes the number of scoops required to clean out all the built up ashes. 5. Since it is metal the ashes can be hot when removed and you don't have to wait for them to be completely cold. 6. It minimizes ash dust but does not totally eliminate it. On the down side: 1. The handle screws into the box metal that is only reinforced with a washer. This does not feel very sturdy to me. 2. Where a dustpan is balanced when full by placing the handle at the top and tapering to the sides of the pan to reinforce the pan, this ash box has the handle in the back center of the weight with nothing to balance it and hold the weight except the handle and metal washer. This makes it very awkward to use. 3. The bolts can become loose with use and must must be re-secured tightly to insure the box does not tip over when full spilling hot ashes everywhere. You might be able to solve this problem with a locking washer. 4.The design makes it very front/side to side heavy when full. I feel like I need to hold handle and the front (can't it's full of hot ashes) or hold it with two hands to balance it. I can hold and balance a similar load in my metal dustpan with one hand no problem. What I need is something more like a metal dustpan with a lid. This is my take after using it a couple months.

Fantastic
I decided to give this a try and it works great in my stove especially when there are still a few hot coals left because in that case, the chimney is still warm and drawing and dust caused by moving the ashes goes up the chimney rather than into the living room. I've used it twice now and I've not had any discernible dust come into my living area -- it's a 1000x better than what I used to do (slowly, carefully, gently scoop out ashes into a metal pail -- this always released clouds of dust -- my wife would stand over me with a vacuum trying to get at least some, but that never really worked well at all). I read some reviews complaining about the handle -- it's fine if you place the bolt through the back wall so the bolt head is inside, and then using a wrench, tighten the nut on the outside of the back wall down real tight. After that, screw the handle into the bolt tightly (it has a captured nut inside the wood handle). I don't see any reason to complain -- the handle feels totally solid to me. I also read reviews saying it won't work if there is a raised lip at the front of the firebox. This is only true if you feel like you must use the device as a scoop, but there is no reason to think that is the only way to use it. My stove has such a lip and so I open the lid, insert the front half into the stove, tilted upward, and use my fireplace shovel to load it up. I do this inside my still warm stove and any dust created just goes up the flue. When it is full, I close the lid, give it a few moments for dust inside the box to settle, and carry it outside. It works great and I'm extremely happy with this solution.

Too small
for a wood burning stove. Handel is flimsy.

Gets the ash out
This is a good enough idea for removing as from your wood-fired heater. Ours is a fireplace insert. It's square shape and low profile allow it to fit into the firebox easily and scrapes the corners fairly clean. I get a scoop full and then take it outside to a metal trash can. Be careful, the coals can stay hot for several days! Construction is sturdy and it hold just enough to not be too heavy for the straight handle. I clean my insert about every 3 days of burning, first thing in the morning, and it usually 3-4 trips outside.

Great buy!!
Great for ash! Yes the handle is easily broken off so when it’s full don’t hold it by the handle, just use some welding gloves and hold the body. It really is the best thing I’ve found to the ash problem when cleaning the wood stove. Just scoop and take it to the ash can outside. We have a blazeking princess and if it’s full of ash it will take 4 scoops to empty it. It really does cut down on the ash floating up from cleaning. Yes it needs an upgraded handle but I’m still giving 5 stars because it’s 100% better than the shovel and bucket!

Open topper!
This is a good idea, but falls short. Its very heavy, almost too heavy for me, but that’s not the problem, the problem is that once the top open initial, it will not close.

Does the job
It works well to keep the ashes out of the air, although I have to run it twice to effectively reduce the ash in the stove (which isn't a large one, living in S-TX). Making it deeper would work for me. Handle is a bit flimsy but hasn't fallen off. It works!

Just what I desperately needed.
I have been using the Ash Dragon now since winter broke. I have used it maybe 10 times and I Love it. Yes The handle is a bit flimsy, but use a couple of properly sized washers and a lock washer and you are good to go. Just remember it is a tool and like any tool you need to learn how to use it. Take your time and work with it and it will get the m essy job done cleanly and safely. What more can you ask $33 to do. Buy it.

Wood stove ash scoop
The scoop works great but there are a couple problems with the design. 1 - the metal bends at handle connection point when the scoop is full , I had to put large 3/8” washers on both sides of the thin metal to spread the load . 2- the scoop lid sits a bit to high when open and it’s difficult to get in and out of the wood stove
