Side with numbers goes against pad
I don't work with sandpaper much, not used to both sides having grit. Not paying attention I put the black side against the pad and ruined a sheet because it wouldn't stay. Put the side with numbers against the pad and black side facing wood and you'll be ready to rock and roll. Some say you can use both sides but I think the grit on the numbers side is just to hold it to the pad, when I mistakenly had that side facing out it didn't sand much of the wood.

good sandpaper, but had some sticking trouble
I have used these Mercer industries sandpaper sheets in an Clarke American Sander company square buff sander rented at home depot. The 60 and 100 grit sandpaper sheets worked GREAT! But i did have a little trouble with these 20 grit sheets. it is not necessarily the fault of the sandpaper, however, so i did not ding them on the number of stars. Here is the problem. These sanders get abused a fair amount by the rental customers. they work by having a big square random orbital plate on the bottom, and that plate had lots of little "hooks" that hold the white or red friction pad in place. You put the sanding paper on the other side of the friction paper. I recently rented a floor sander, and those tiny hooks were worn down on 40% of the bottom plate. So what happened was, the red friction pad did not hold on tightly to the machine's plate, and subsequently got worn down quickly, and then the 20 grit sand sheet did not hold on well either to the semi-damaged friction pad. So in retrospect, 20 grit is probably too aggressive a grit to use with these machines. If i did it again, i probably would not buy coarser than 36 grit. If you DO want to use 20 grit sandpaper, INSPECT THE FRICTION PLATE ON THE BOTTOM OF THE MACHINE you are renting! And do not rent it unless most of the little metal hooks are present. Unless your red friction pad is well attached to the machine, it will not hold this 20 grit paper very well

Deck Sanding Extraordinaire
Home Depot was out of the sandpaper for the rental deck sander so I decided to order these. I was nervous that they wouldn’t wouldn’t work as well since there is no adhesive on the back but boy was I wrong. I rented the deck sander from Home Depot and got to it. These sheets worked amazing. I sanded my 320 sq ft deck in less than hour and used about 8 sheets. The sheets are double sided so I just flipped them over and kept going. The deck was very weathered but the 60 grit made the cedar boards soft to the touch and ready for solid stain. Definitely recommend!

Good for finish sanding.
These worked great....exactly like they should however, the grit was too light for what I needed to do. I sanded a hardwood floor using a floor sander a heavier grit would have been better for me. Use these sheets to do the final finish sanding. Heavy scratches or marks will need to be a heavier grit.

Work perfectly in American square buff sander
I had no slippage at all using this in a home drpot rental square buff orbital sander (brand:American). The back side is indeed very rough and easily grips into a red sanding pad In fact, since these are silicon carbide, these seem to cut twice as well as the ones they sell at the home depot rental placev. I 100% approve of these

To know before you buy
The product works, but the adhesive was lacking so I had to use spray glue to ensure paper stayed in place. Appeared the item received was New Old stock and had lost its ability to stay in place without added assistance. But still got the job done. Would buy it again, if needed as the price is appropriate

Functioned well. Fit sander perfectly. Only reason I dropped a star is that one side of the paper seemed lower grit. Great price
