Strong Stylish Permanent Structure...
This is an "excellent" Bed Assist Bar by Martha Stewart that has been created to provide strong, "permanent" support as needed, getting in and out of bed, standing bedside, sitting up in bed, and so on... And at some point, we'll ALL be in need of, if not due to aging or becoming an elderly individual, but due to perhaps an injury, a fall, an accident, an illness that "weakens" one's strength, or surgery... even as a younger, otherwise "youthful" person. I say "permanent" structure because the unit does not, or is not designed to "fold down," if you will, when not in use or not needed, which I think would be a great feature for the bar, particularly when being used by "Non-Elderly" or "Non-Invalid" persons that may require it's assistance temporarily due to reasons aforementioned. Besides that, it's perfect in every way: is made of very strong, durable materials, including: strong metal bars and tubes, quality hardware, strong adjustable straps for securing the assist bar to the bedding; assist bar itself is very stylish, padded, in an attractive neutral "taupe-ish" hue of beige, that will coordinate "beautifully" with any color scheme, that's easy to grab hold of on either side of bed, inside or out, as well as a very "handy" water resistant and mesh outer pocket to hold ALL your essentials, like: comb, brush, meds, magazines or books, Kindle, writing pad and pen, snacks, cough drops, tissues or handkerchiefs, toothpicks, napkins, straws, remote, cell phone, "whatever" you need within arms reach. Very strategic design! Very good, "clear" instructions included, didn't take long to assemble. Yaay! Quality Product, Design, and Craftsmanship. 5Stars!*****

Not easily installed
OK, I first want to say that I ordered this guard rail based simply on the first picture in the listing, so my issue with this product is mostly my own fault. The first picture doesn't show the straps that are attached to it. Straps that need to be wrapped around the box springs, under the mattress. Silly me, I thought I could install this all by myself. When I opened the package, the first thing I read in the instructions was how it would be easier to install the guard rail with the mattress removed. What? As far as assembly, the whole unit is easy to put together. Most of the pieces snap together, so the only real work was putting two screws, one on each side. The screws, as well as the required Allen wrench, are included. This brings me to the second issue I had with this product. When I screwed the cross bar in between the side rails, the left side rail didn't line up with the right one. I stuck forward about five to six inches more than the right side. Loosening and re-tightening the screws several times, I finally managed to get them close together, with a smaller gap between them, but it wasn't easy. After I got the unit assembled, I did my best to place it on the bed without removing the mattress, thinking I could use a grabber to push the straps under from one side and pull them out on the other. I did manage to get them pushed under one side, but pulling them out the other side was impossible with the mattress in place, since I couldn't hold the mattress up to find the ends by myself. I ended up having to involve my husband, who finally convinced me to pull the mattress off the bed. Unfortunately, we have the remnants of an adjustable bed in the form of a base about two inches thick that is attached to a metal frame underneath. As we discussed how to get the straps from the far side of the bed to the other, we realized that if the straps were passed underneath the metal frame, they could possibly be scraped up, become frayed and split into pieces. So, we decided to try using the guard rail without the straps being in place. We've put the mattress back in place with the rail wedged underneath. Since my husband will be pulling toward the mattress, I'm expecting that it can be used without the strap. This seems like such a useful product, that I didn't pay enough attention to what would be involved in installing it. I think we'll find that we like having this railing on the bedside. I just wish I'd known up front how difficult it would be to install it.

Very sturdy but could be uncomfortable with bars underneath
I got this to help prevent my father from falling off the bed. Here are the takeaways about it. Putting this thing together wasn't too hard. Just be sure the locking straps are in the right place (they fall off easy when not assembled) before assembly.. otherwise you'll have to take it apart. The height is "adjustable", okay not really adjustable for height.. It just has a mid section you can add to height or remove to make it shorter. Either way it is pretty stable. If you do use the midsection, it adds on a pocket you can attach on to bars (as seen in the photos). I mentioned it could be uncomfortable.. the bars that secure it goes under a mattress. If your mattress conforms to shapes, it will have to round bars. Fortunately in my case we have Purple mattresses so you really can't feel the bars. The bar feels secure in place even if you don't use the straps it comes with. The straps it comes with is long enough to wrap around a bed. Probably better to secure it but since we didn't want to feel straps around the top side of the bed, we didn't use it. It felt secure in place with just the mattress weight holding it in place. The look of it is.. well old looking as in used by elders.. well hey that's what we are using it for. Any case you won't win any design/decor awards.

Durable and Safe
This bed guard rail is very durable and heavy duty, and once installed very sturdy. Installation is a breeze took less than 15 minutes. The only wish is for it to be just a little wider to add a little more security but nonetheless its great support for those getting up/down from the bed.
