Fantastic sewing machine!
This is the first sewing machine where I can’t sew as fast as it can. I have a couple of times run it at top speed, but not often. It is so easy to operate and sews like a dream. If I have my 48 blocks ready to sew, I can put the top together in less than an hour. The threading is different but not difficult. I read reviews that said changing the bobbin was hard but I haven’t found it difficult at all. I have not figured out how to use either the automatic threader or automatic bobbin. The only things I don’t like is that I can’t see the bobbin to know when it’s getting low and the bobbin is so small. I go through 2-3 bobbins every day.

I use my Brother more than my much more expensive Pfaff machine
I bought my Brother about 6 months ago. I wanted to wait to write my review so I could have a well formed opinion of the machine. I started out sewing on a small little Janome Gold that cost less than $200 several years ago. I then upgraded to Pfaff Ambition. Even though I had a much nicer machine, I felt like it was lacking in some areas. I was at one of my modern quilt guild meetings and a woman did a demonstration using the Brother. After that I was on a quest to read reviews and see if this machine was something I would enjoy using. I was initially intimidated when I first took it out of the box. My Pfaff was very intuitive and looked easy to use. The brother was more industrial and required a little more thought on how to make it work. It took me about a week before I really started to play with it. There are many features to comment on: Free Motion Quilting and Walking Foot – I am starting with these features, because these are the features I love the most. My Pfaff was very difficult to FMQ on. The Brother is wonderful to use. I have now been able to FMQ several quilts. It does a wonderful job keeping up with the speed of doing FMQ and the stiches look wonderful. The wide throat space is also very nice. I do wish the FMQ foot had a slit in it. A lot of times when you start out with FMQ you have thread tails that need to be held to the side. Since I don’t have a slit in the foot it is hard to get the tails out of the way. Automatic Thread Cutter – I love this feature. I have never had it until now. I have seen complaints about how short the bobbin thread is cut. When I have to pull up the bobbin thread I just use a set of tweezers I have nearby to help me pull the thread through. So the short cut does not bother me. Light – I do find the light to be lacking. I wish it were a bit brighter. I recently purchased an extra light that I attached to my machine to shine down on the sewing area and that seems to be working well. Knee Lift – To be honest, I never use this. I find that it just gets in the way. Maybe when I upgrade to a nicer sewing table and have more knee room I may attach it again. Weight of machine – The machine is very heavy. Which should be expected from an industrial machine. I almost hate having to switch my machine around due to the weight though. The machine has never shifted while I was sewing no matter how fast I sew. Sewing feet – I wish some of the sewing feet were see-through. Sometimes I want to be able to see under the foot to see what I am sewing, but all of the Brother feet are solid metal. Threading the machine – After 6 months I still have to get my book out. I use it now just as a quick reference, but in the beginning I had to follow it very carefully to thread the machine. Bobbin – I found the bobbin very difficult to put in when I first got the machine. Now I don’t have any problems. What I do is place the bobbin in the bobbin holder. Then I pull the lever and it snaps in. Before I was trying to hold the lever as I was putting in the bobbin and it was a pain. I do wish the bobbin held a little more thread. The machine stops winding with plenty of room left to add more thread. I did figure out if you keep pressing the pedal over and over again with little taps you can add a little more thread at a time to the bobbin. I also wish I could view the bobbin while sewing. My Pfaff has a clear window so I can see when my thread is getting low. With the Brother it’s always a surprise when you run out. Automatic Needle Threader – This feature also took some figuring out. I couldn’t get it to work at first. I have figured out that once the thread is placed in the needle threader (and near the eye of the needle) if you pull slightly upwards on the thread the threader seems to catch the thread and will pull it through. I have found that sometimes the thread does get shredded as it goes through, but that usually isn’t a big deal since you would cut off that part anyway. The automatic needle treader will not work with some feet, like the FMQ foot. So I just manually thread the machine in those instances. Sewing Speed – The speed scared me a first. I had never had a machine that sewed so fast. I don’t think I have ever maxed out the speed on this machine. I have found that if I go to fast I can’t control the sewing line. It starts to get wonky. Machine Maintenance – This is the first time I have owned a machine that I have to oil. Sometimes I forget that I need to oil it. So I try to usually oil it before a big project or if I haven’t used it in a couple of weeks. I know this is a long review, but if you are like me I prefer the more detailed reviews. Especially if you are going to spend a large amount of money on an item. Overall I am very glad I bought the machine. I feel like my sewing skills have improved tremendously. Especially when free motion quilting. I recently made a diaper bag and had to sew through several layers of fabric, batting, and interfacing. This machine had no problems going through the layers. It’s a tough machine and I have to say I prefer this machine over my more expensive Pfaff!!

Know your priorities for a new machine's features
As a quilter of nearly 20 years and seamstress of 40+ years, I purchased this machine primarily to work with larger pieces for quilting and free-motion quilting as well has heavier garment fabrics such as denim and duck. While the machine has many positive qualities, the negatives are significant enough that I'm considering returning it. THE POSITIVES: As noted by many in the questions and product reviews, the machine does have a beautiful stitch. The foot pedal is more than enough to control the machine's speed once you've gotten used to it. I quilt and sew in bare feet which I think helps. The weight of the machine holds it in place so that it doesn't hop across the table when you're pushing a larger piece through the harp. The harp has a generous amount of working space at approx. 9" X 6". The variable feed dog levels and presser foot pressure features are very nice and work well in tandem. The variable stitch length has a good range with stitches small enough for fine needle work and long enough for generous machine basting. While I have yet to use all of them, the many feet that come with this machine are nice and give you more sewing options, including the ability to put in an invisible zipper. The upper threading seems a bit complicated at first but practice makes it much easier. Once you've done it a few times it's intuitive. The triple eye on the first thread guide gives you more thread tension control, but it is not necessary to use all three all the time. There are several thread guides that are slip throughs and make threading much easier but all of the eyes in the upper machine are closed and must be threaded by hand. The eyes are a good size so that is more of a nuisance than a problem. The actual tension spring is positioned a bit oddly in that it sits on the outside of the front of the tension mechanism. When I first saw it I thought it was broken but it seems that is the way it was built. Odd but workable. The extension table that comes with the machine is generous in width but could be a bit deeper as it gives no additional support once the fabric has passed under the needle. I solved this with a custom ordered acrylic extension table at an additional cost of $103. That had to be ordered from a different company. Again, not a big problem but if you need a deeper table to start with it is something you will want to consider. The feet to level the table are easy to access and adjust. The knee lift is a nice feature but can't be used if your machine is on top of a table. The machine must be mounted into a table in order to use it. THE NEGATIVES: Once you get to the needle this machine begins to be seriously problematic. First of all, everything is oriented from the left. If you are left-handed it might not be such a problem. As a right-handed person it's awkward. The needle threads from the left. The automatic needle threader is absolutely useless. The documentation in the user's manual is poorly written and I could find no online videos or other assistance. I was spending 5-10 minutes trying to get it to work without luck. Threading a size 14 quilting needle by hand isn't a problem. Trying to thread a size 9, 10 or 12 universal needle is an entirely different story. I finally had to remove the needle, thread it by hand, then put it back into the machine in order to be able to sew. The needle itself is difficult to seat because the opening into which needle is placed seems smaller than most and is difficult to find. I have had to turn the machine on it's back several times in order to seat the needle. As someone who changes needles regularly this is a real problem. If an easy to use automatic needle threader is a feature that is important, this is not the machine for you. If you need to use a variety of style and sized needles and change needles frequently, this is probably not the best choice. The bobbin mechanism is poorly engineered and counter intuitive to those of us who have sewn for years with machines that have the same type of basic race and bobbin case. While there is a flap in the extension table you lift to access the bobbin mechanism, it is deceptively small. There are a total of 3 flaps that need to be opened before the bobbin can be accessed. But, I still have had to remove extension table that came with the machine in order to get to the bobbin. Since the seating mechanism for the extension table is a two step process this is problematic. Even then, the bobbin is so far in from the left that it is very difficult to work with. Seating the bobbin case into the race is extremely awkward. The slot to seat the case is toward the front of the machine (on the right if you were looking at it straight on) and the lever you hold onto to secure the bobbin in the case while you are trying to seat it opens to the back of the machine (toward the left if you are looking straight on.) It is impossible to do with your right hand and requires you to twist your left hand unnaturally. Because the entire bobbin mechanism is so far under the machine there's no way to see what you're doing so it's hit or miss until you find the right position and the case snaps into place. This is about as poor a bit of engineering in a sewing machine as I've ever seen. The upper thread cutter cuts the thread so short that the needle becomes unthreaded nearly every time. There has been some feedback that you shouldn't use certain brands of thread because of the manufacturer's tight wind, or that you should use certain auxilliary products in order to ease the thread's winding tension, or that you should keep your thread as far away from the machine as possible which would require an additional thread stand purchased separately. I thought I was purchasing a fully functional sewing machine, not one that required certain brands of thread, additional products, or alternate thread placement in order to work well. A machine at this level should be able to handle just about everything thrown at it, not the very least of which would be thread. I do not use this feature even though it was one of the selling points for me. Overall, I have to say the machine produces good results, but the ease of use is very, very poor. As I said, at this point I am seriously considering returning it. I have had it for about 2 weeks now and have not been able to overcome the problems I am having. I will give it another week to see if it's simply a matter of becoming used to how things are done with this model but, if I can't overcome them I will have to seek a return and refund. This is not a machine for a beginner. It is not a machine for someone visually impaired or who has less than slender hands with long fingers. It is not a machine that is easy to use if you are right handed. It is a good value for the price, but what's a good deal if the machine is so difficult to use?

Well made free motion quilting machine!
I thought the price was great and so was the product. You get numerous accessories and even a walking foot! The automatic threader works great! I know a few people said they found it hard to use but I don't know why? It works great for me; Perhaps because I watched a video and read a couple pointers that other people on-line pointed out. The only negative thing I can think to say is that, I wasn't fussy with the closed toe plastic covered free-motion foot that is included with the machine! I would think that most free motion quilters use an open toe foot without the plastic. I ended up ordering an open toe foot which cost $40.00 CAD. All in all though, it's a great machine!

Strong and durable.
I've only had this machine for a few days but what a work horse! I've done some small quilting and the 1/4 " foot is great. I used the walking foot to repair the canvas cover for my husband's boat and it didn't bat an eye at it. Strong, fast and surprisingly quiet. I'll update when I've used this a little more but so far I'm impressed. I'd read some reviews and it takes a bit of getting used to the threading and bobbin on this machine. This is definitely not a beginner or entry level machine. Also the needle threader is probably the most pathetic thing I've seen, but so far that's the only drawback.

Consistent stitching for free motion
I bought this machine for free motion quilting as my other machine skipped too many stitches when sewing backwards free motion. The free motion foot has good visibility and there are very few skipped stitches as long as the thread tension is properly set. It has been a learning curve to get the proper tension consistently when changing threads. The needle threader works more than half the time but not all the time. I miss the auto threader my other machine has. I also miss the bobbin nearly empty warning my other machine has. On the plus side I am much happier with the free motion stitching capability. It is nice to be able to do a whole lap quilt with only a couple skipped stitches. The throat is large enough to do full size quilts too.

This machine is great!
It is easy to use and a good strong machine! I had a a Brother PQ1500s for 13 years but it quit! It was my go to machine so really missed it and wanted another one!
