Time-consuming, but effective
I bought these to repolish the marble threshold on the door to my bathroom. I purchased an apartment in a 65 year old building. It had many of the original mid-century features remaining. The bathroom had a dull, stained threshold. I asked the previous owner if it was marble, and he was convinced it was not. I wasn’t so sure. A little research convinced me it was marble. The piece is only 3” x 24” so I thought I’d try my hand at re-polishing it, myself. It seemed small enough to tackle without power tools. I began by cleaning the stains as best I could. Since there was no remnant if the original shine, I ended up starting with mild cleaners, but working up to using some pretty harsh chemicals to get the stains out. Even so, there are a couple of spots that would not completely come out. After thoroughly cleaning the surface, I thoroughly wet it down, then wet the 50 grit block, got down on my hands and knees, and went to town. I found that I did not need to use much pressure for the block to do its work. Light, even pressure was the key. I worked through each level of grit, starting with 50, then 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,500, and finally 3,000. In each grit level, I went over the entire surface several times, rinsing the block and wiping down the surface between each application. By the time I reached 3,000 grit, I’d been at it several hours. I wasn’t convinced the 3,000 grit was doing anything, at first. I couldn’t detect any “bite” as I was going over the wet surface. I was wrong. After going over the surface with 3,000 grit for the third time, I wiped it down and dried it with a soft cloth and beheld a mirror finish. I’ll admit that was a surprise to me. I have no doubt that this system could easily be used to restore a mirror shine to a countertop which has had some etching. However, it would be much too time-consuming to use for large areas. For larger areas or severe damage, I’d investigate power tools or hiring a professional refinisher. Despite the time and effort (or perhaps because of it) I ended up with a beautiful, renewed architectural feature and a sense of pride an accomplishment.

Up to 400# Grit great for Lapidary / Jewelry hobbyists
For rough opal, the 100# ,200# , and especially the 400# grits all do extremely well. The 800#, 1500# , and 3000# grits are much harder to use due to the separation distance in the little bubbles that hold the diamonds. I was afraid of this, and it proved correct (Thankfully you can buy the 4 lower grits as a set for less.). The 400 grit is my primary use and it is holding up very well, saving money on sandpaper. I am still using sandpaper to get to "polish" level (600#-1800#), but will be looking for a diamond alternative that doesn't use separated bubbles at the finer grits. Opal has a similar mohs hardness rating as concrete at around 6. Great for hobby level lapidary when you don't want/can't spend $1500 on a proper grinding wheel. Make sure you wet your grinding tools (wheel/sandpaper) to prevent breathing silica and developing silicosis. Not a good way to end a hobby.

The adhesive attaching the abrasive material is weaker than the foam it is attached to.
I chose this more expensive set from a more known seller expecting that I would have a solid experience. I tried the different grit factors trying to get a good match to the surface polish level of the original porcelain penny tiles. 800 was just right, but busted my project when the adhesive failed on the abrasive surface.

Great Value, Better Packaging
These blocks are an excellent value and seem to work just as well as more expensive brands. Our company uses these regularly and have been very impressed with the quality for the price. The only downfall I've noticed is the packaging. It's difficult to get them back in the box that they came in. But, for that minor inconvenience, they are definitely worth the purchase!

Great for hand polishing stone
Love these! I use them to hand polish agates that I find in the desert. They work relatively quickly and produce a beautiful, smooth, glassy finish. Best if you shape them with a diamond file first and then rub them on the pads to polish. Very happy with my purchase. They did not work on the Jasper. Maybe it's too hard.

Using to polish stones and for that they work fantastic. Nice size and easy to use. Nice range of grits. Can get a nice polish pretty quick on thunder eggs and petrified wood.
