Great for Making Your Own Stain
Following a DIY tutorial led me to this product. I wanted to make my own glaze because most of the wood stains I was running into were dull and I didn't want to buy Unicorn Spit for this project. I had to apply a few coats (with a spong brush) to get the saturation of color I wanted, but that'd because I used too much of this medium at first. Anyway, the shelf turned out great.

Great for Collage
This gel medium, while a bit pricey, is a wonderful product for it’s adhesive properties and effects. It has an even glossy finish and is easy to apply with a brush. It’s also easy to clean with soap and water. I use it to adhere dried flowers onto paper and the results are beautiful. I highly recommend this product as an alternative to a matte finish depending upon what you’re looking for.

When they say ultra matte, they mean ultra matte!
I bought this to get a matte finish with my acrylic paints, as I do a lot of illustration work and matte surfaces are easier to photograph and scan. I work semi-regularly with gouache and I like the flat, velvety finish. The finish of this medium is similar, though using it with satin or glossy acrylic paints doesn’t create the same smooth, level surface that you’d get from using either traditional or acrylic gouache. It thins the paints a bit, so that thick, velvety consistency isn’t there. But the surface sheen is comparable. This ultra matte medium mixes with both heavy body and soft body/fluid acrylics very well, and I imagine it would also work with acrylic inks. It extends the drying time a little, works with water and a little goes a long way! I found that I needed very little of this medium to get a matte finish with most of my acrylics. Increasing the amount of medium reduces the pigmentation and coverage of the mix, which is fine if you’re glazing with it or using watercolor painting techniques, but it can also make the paint a bit more streaky, especially if you’re using soft body/fluid acrylics. With heavy body acrylics, the paint consistency, pigment load and color are also a factor. So, finding the right balance for what you’re doing at the time, as well as the consistency and pigment load of the acrylic paint you’re working with, is essential. Since I build up my colors slowly with a lot of layers most of the time, this medium suits a lot of my acrylic work nicely. Oh, I also have tried using a fine layer of this medium on finished work to create a matte surface. While it definitely works, it adds the slightest cloudiness to the paint surface that’s is visible on some colors. It’s probably best to go with a matte varnish if that is needed, but in a pinch for work that will be scanned/photographed and processed digitally (illustration, hand-painted motifs for design, etc), it’s not much of an issue. How does this compare to Liquitex’s Matte Medium? I also have the regular matte medium and, in comparison, this one is definitively more matte. It creates a flat finish very similar to gouache, even with acrylics that are pretty glossy to start with, while the regular matte medium leaves more of a satin finish with glossier paints and really only gets to a truly matte finish when mixing it with more satin-looking paints. When they say “ultra matte”, they really do mean ultra matte!

Great glazing medium, use in moderation
If you're new to glazing medium, this provides 2 benefits when you add a bit to your paint. First, it helps your thinned paint stay together into a more consistent mixture. Also, the gel-like consistency makes it slightly less watery. Second, it can help your paint dry more smoothly. You'll notice this effect particularly when painting with white, because white paint uses bigger pigments that love to clump up together and produce ugly visible bumps. Glazing medium reduces that effect to provide a somewhat smoother finish. One side effect, though, is that this medium leaves a glossy finish, so you may need to coat the finished area with a matte varnish if you don't want the glossy effect. It is possible to use too much, so use a small/moderate amount. Anyway, this product is very useful and does exactly what it's supposed to. This brand is also a recommended medium in several miniature painting videos. 5 stars.

It really is ULTRA matte
As it’s label says, this is a very reliable matte surfacing medium. Used normally in fairly small amounts it completely pushes the gloss down into a dead flat. If increased in amount it will create a more transparent colour. But if you over use this medium expect to see so your paint appear a bit lighter in value. That whitish look is just a product of how matte medium works. And that’s normal. Thing is, most matte mediums don’t produce that whitish effect because they usually don’t contain enough of that material to really work reliably. This one does! I’ve tried so many as a studio art teacher. Use it in appropriate amounts and you’ll get a perfect result and you'll find the bottle will last a pretty long time. I love this ultra matte medium.

Disappointing -- doesn't dry clear
I expected any acrylic medium to dry clear, but this stuff doesn't, it dries white. I was using it in a collage but I'll be using something different in future.
