I love kwikset knobs but...

What I love about Kwikset locks: I strongly prefer kwikset knobs to others because when you unlock them with the key, it is all the way unlocked. If you take the key inside and then walk out the door again, the door WILL NOT lock behind you. This is a very good thing! On many doorknobs including Schlage, you can unlock with the key but unless you also turn the lock button manually, the door will lock behind you. I also like the smart key feature to key a kwikset lock to the keys you already have, and get everything matching. I ordered this doorknob from amazon because I could no longer get the antique brass finish anywhere. But, what is the deal with the handle eventually getting so it no longer turns the latch all the way in? This is the third knob to start giving this issue. I have matching locks and knobs on four doors and I don''t want to change them all, but this is getting ridiculous. It still works, but only opens the door turning the handle to the left now. If I turn it to the right all the way, the door cannot open.. The latch is just not quite retracted enough. When it was new it turned either way easily.

I like the ability to rekey the lock. I needed a new lock system and one that will match my existing key. I would buy again.

Whoever invented SmartKey deserves a Nobel Peace Prize

SmartKey allows you to rekey your new door lock to an existing key and it is SO EASY!!!!! I didn’t read the directions, instead watched the video Kwikset has on YouTube. Word of advice, gentlemen and ladies and gentlemen again: Watch the very short video, without distraction, at least once before you just cue up the video with your nerves already tweaked from installing the door lock. Here’s why... Replacing my existing entry door lock/installing this new Kwikset Juno Wntry Lock was a more than a little exasperating. Replacing door locks is always at best an annoyance to me because twisting those screws that are just behind the roundish door knob is a serious PITA (pain in the...). Forget doing it with a standard Phillips head bit unless you’re okay with your door handle being jacked up. (I mean, in hindsight it could’ve helped to use masking or painters tape a good 2 layers on the knob, but that thought just hit me as I type this). So you just about need a manual Phillips screwdriver. And keeping those screws in place without them falling through AND hitting those holes on the inside of the outdoor side is AAAAAAAAAGGGGGHHHHHH. Of course, if you haven’t figured this out, I’m a high strung, low patience girl - hahaha. Rekeying was the easiest part of the process of installing this new door lock, I’ll put it like that. Is it worth hiring a locksmith or handyman - uh, not even a little bit. Anywayssss... this door lock is great! Low cost, relatively easy installation, and BRILLIANT rekeying DIY capability.

Not Exactly an Energy Saver

We put new doors and windows in our water-view home, new siding, and made several water related repairs. One of the ideas was to make the house more energy efficient. The door knobs were installed in some rather pricey Pella brand doors and defeated the energy savings. Cold outside air goes right through the keyhole and comes out through the screw access holes on the inside plate. There is quite a rush of air. I went to the Kwikset website to ask them if they had a fix for this and some time later I received an automated reply telling me that I had to register on their website to get my answer. (I'm sure this was the idea of a loony marketing person. Doing this they can get my email address.) Well I have not gone back to get their solution since they are making it too hard to get a response. I may have to remove the door knobs and stuff insulation behind the plate or fill the holes with a clear caulk. Yes these locks were very convenient and even recommended by the contractor. I just don't think an external door lock assembly should leak air in or out especially when installed in an expensive double pane energy saving glass door. Kwikset's service was third rate. I dislike the idea of having to go back to their website, register, and then read what is probably going to amount to my own solution. What I was kind of hoping was that they had plugs designed for the screw holes that could stop the air so that messy caulking would not be required. We purchased these from Amazon because they could get the units to us in quantity and faster than Ace Hardware. We had them in two days as requested in time for installation. During our first major snow storm we noticed the jets of cold air as we reached to open the door. Very surprising flaw. Bad design. This was Kwikset's response: Submitted Submitted By Notes 1/22/2010 Customer Service (Agustin) Dear Customer, Thank you for contacting us. Ther is no way the air goes through the cyilnder. We recommend tightening the screws a little tighter. If this does not work, we can replace the unit for you under warranty. Thank you, Kwikset Consumer Support. The spelling errors are the reps. Fascinating. I feel the air, the screws are tight. The door is a very expensive Pella door. I was right. In order to get this feeble answer I had to log on and give them my address and telephone number. I'm sure now I will be deluged with junk mail. Since I am a Black and Decker stock holder I should probably complain.

Great customer service

I really like the "one key" system. We purchased a country cabin that has a total of six locking doors (three are carport closets) and I easily keyed them all to match our other home. Less keys to mess with. Didn't like that the locking mechanisms had some of the key teeth up and some of the key teeth down. Called up Kwikset customer service and they sent me a small tool that makes it easy to remove the "cores" and orient them all in the same direction. This helps when it's dark and I can't see which way the keyhole is facing - now they are all "key teeth down." Wish they had these when I owned rental houses. For my own house, if I every lose a key or get one stolen I can grab one of the Kwikset keys that were included with one of the sets that I didn't use and re-key all my doors in short order.

Feels really cheap and plasticky

The handle set is decent (grade 3 quality) but the core where the key goes in feels like plastic. When you insert the key it crunches and doesn't give a sense of solid security. This doesn't seem like something that will hold up over time and in fluctuating weather. Maybe use this if you want to keep your kids out of something but I would not rely on it for anything more than that.

Se instala fácilmente

Tenía una perilla que instalé hace unos 18 años pero perdí las llaves. Esta es un poco más cara que la que te encuentras en la tienda depot pero se siente muy bien al tacto cuando se usa. Es de mucho mayor seguridad. Estoy satisfecho con la compra.
