Best Grinder EVER!
Hi everybody! I bought this particular Krups coffee grinder mainly because my mom has one that is coming up on 20 years old. As the saying goes, "they just don't make em like they used to." Or do they? The answer is YES. Side by side comparison of the 20 year old white Krups, and my brand new black Krups revealed almost no difference. They are identical. You know what that means to me? It means the company knows they make a great product that lasts for years, so why change it? All I can say is I wish Krups made cars. So, about the grinder... It is very simple and straightforward. A powerful machine with one purpose: to pulverize anything you put in it. I mainly use mine for coffee, but I also use it for spices occasionally. Normally I hand grind all my spices in a mortar and pestle. I have even used it to grind my home grown dry chili peppers to put in a shaker. It works beautifully! The only problem with that is cleaning, but its not fair to fault the machine for that. After all, it was meant for coffee beans. It does take a bit of work to clean it without damaging it. You can't exactly put it in the dishwasher. I used a dry toothbrush and toothpicks to pick out all the spicy mess. I assume I got it all out since I don't taste any chili pepper in my coffee. Heck, for 20 bucks, its worth buying a second one just for spices! This is a great grinder! It is well built and very powerful! There is no doubt in my mind that this one will last 20+ years just like my moms! UPDATE 2/2016! It's been about 4 years and this grinder is still going strong! I use it about 2 to 3 times daily. I haven't had one single problem with it, and I have not had to perform any sort of maintenance except for the occasional cleaning. I have noticed a few gripes from other reviewers that I would like to address: 1. Hard to pour the coffee into the coffee maker from the grinder. Really? Come on. Grind your coffee, turn the thing upside down with the lid on, give it a few taps, and pull the lid off in the upside down position. Now you have a nice little container of ground coffee to pour it into your machine. It's not brain surgery... you can do this. Give it a try! 2. Oval shape hinders the circular flow of beans while grinding. I have found this only matters when you overload the grinder. Keep it to level with the top and you're golden. If you're like me and insist on filling the thing with a huge heap, then do this: I solved this by pulsing the power button 5 or 6 times. While doing that, you can watch the grounds circulate top to bottom, not round and round. Either way, your beans still get pulverized, so who cares? 3. Comparing this unit to a high dollar burr grinder. NO! STOP IT! This is a $20 blender type (for lack of a better term) It's not a barrista's wet dream $300 burr grinder. It's just not, no matter how much you want it to be. If that's what you were expecting when you dropped a whole Jackson on this one, you must enjoy disappointment. It's like comparing apples to.. hmm... applesauce.. yeah, applesauce. Lets go with that. 4. Too loud. I saw one reviewer that described this unit as "deafeningly loud" which I had to chuckle at. Granted, it's not exactly quiet, but it's not "deafening" in any sense of the word. If you're one of those spastic drama queens who overly exaggerates everything, this one is not for you. The grinder is basically a drill motor with a tiny lawn mower blade on it. It's gonna make some noise. I'd say it's comparable to a hair dryer on low. I am rather biased on the noise level though. I work in a steel mill, so to me the noise level is no big deal. Take that for whatever it's worth to ya, but it's hardly deafening or I would most certainly be stone deaf by now. I will update again sometime in the future! ta ta! 10 YEAR UPDATE!!! I have nothing to complain about.. literally nothing! This grinder still works just as good as the day it was new! Considering at least a pot a day sometimes more, we are talking over 3,650 uses. That also makes my moms grinder I mentioned 30 years old and hers is also still going strong. I challenge you to show me any product that lasts 10 years without a single problem. Some may say "Its not the years, its the mileage." which is true to an extent... however, I am not nice to this grinder.. Its not a once-in-a-while thing. Its had daily use since day one. We've been through a lot together and she's got a lottta rough miles on 'er... but the most important thing is she's still here and just won't give up.

Inexpensive way to start grinding your own
I bought this to do as little effort as possible so I could see if I would actually use a grinder, and what I needed to consider in a grinder if I did use it. It has served that purpose appropriately, so it was a good buy for me. So, what I learned: This grinder is an easy way to start grinding spices, and yes, they are better and unground stock does keep it's potency longer than store bought ground spices. I have found in some recipes I have had to cut the amount of spice down if I use my ground ones as opposed to jarred ground spice - pumpkin pie for example. This grinder is easy to use, and for me, I grind for the recipe, so the small size is very appropriate. I still buy some spices ground, but as I have gained experience, I find myself using it more and more. This is an electric grinder, and the spices can get hot when you grind them, this can cause the spices to cake in the bottom of the grinder and degrade the spice. You can limit that effect by using a "pulse" method on the grind, but it would take forever to eliminate it completely - for some things you just need a mortar and pestle, which I have also purchased and made comparisons. Some things are best with the pestle, but the grinder really is quick and easy if you are careful about the heat, especially if you plan to toast the spices immediately anyway. you cannot remove the cup and clean it, the best you can do is the rice, baking soda, and wipe out, although using a bit of vodka or other unflavored spirit to dampen the cloth can help remove oils. If what you are grinding has much oil - like coffee - it is difficult to remove, and will flavor what you grind next. Another reviewer indicated that keeping two grinders, 1 for coffee, 1 for spice is a good idea, and I concur. The prices on this item vary to a ridiculous amount I have since discovered. I have seen it priced from below $10 to over $60. This one was easy and convenient, free shipping, came quickly and was new in a new, unscarred box that would be suitable for a gift, so I am not disappointed, however if you are minding your pennies and not in a hurry, you can save a bob or two by comparison shopping. The plastic making up the lid is soft and brittle. The inside of the lid quickly scarred such that it is opaque after remarkably few grindings. I dropped the lid, and it cracked easily. It still works, but finding a replacement lid is just stupid. Most of the places supplying them charge as much in shipping as a new grinder, so, be aware that this is a "disposable appliance", and plan to pitch it when something breaks. I generally prefer appliances that can be easily repaired with reasonable replacement parts, more economical, less wasteful, and better for the planet, but society as a whole does not seem to agree, and this device is a symptom of that. So, I am happy with this grinder, and have purchased two more, one as a gift for a cooking friend, and a second for when this lid breaks completely. Added note - as I have continued to use this, I have discovered that some of the harder spices - cinnamon, and dried ginger root for example - never seem to completely grind to a fine powder like what you get with purchased ground spices. For most things this is not a problem, but if you are trying to do something with a velvety texture, it is necessary to sift the spices after grinding and before you measure to get out the less ground bits or you wind up with a bit of grit in your finished product. This may be true of all grinders, I don't know - still new at this, but something to think about.

Do Not Wash
It's great in what it does. It will turn your coffee or spices into powder. Just know that if you try to wash the blade, water may seep through the seals and seize up the motor. Don't try to wash this thing. It's also not service-able. If you're going to try to take this thing apart, you're not going to have an easy time.

Best $20 purchase you will make in this lifetime!!!
I bought this coffee grinder in 2014. It is now 2023. As an avid french press user and coffee drinker, I have used this grinder every single day (over 3000+ days) since then. Sometimes i use it for other things but usually just coffee. It has never once not performed and is still working just as well as the day i bought it. It's probably the best $20 I've ever spent.

Does a great job on coffee beans
The grinder works well and the noise level is acceptable, not quiet by any means, but what was expected. However, it is NOT easy to clean. If I want to use it for anything else I'm going to have to find a brush of some sort to clean around the blade since it can't be washed. Good value for the money.

Well designed, quick and easy to use. Strong motor.
I decided to look for an electric grinder when I began buying whole spices and found my little stoneware pestle and mortar a little too time consuming. This review is therefore about the grinding of whole spices rather than coffee beans. I first purchased a James Martin by Whal mini grinder as it was advertised as being suitable for coffee beans, dry spices and nuts. It turned out to be almost useless for grinding dry spices, despite many various attempts with different seeds the result was always a very disappointing combined gritty and dusty mixture. I found the machine awkward to use and the plastic 'viewing' window at the top of the lid nothing more than a tiny peep hole. My next choice was the Krups Coffee mill as I noticed on the Krups website, under specifications, it is stated for use with dry spices. ~ Description ~ I really liked the straightforward oval cylinder shape of this mill with its black plastic shiny finish and slanted clear plastic lid with a black rectangular switch at the side. The unit stands 17cm high and is approximately 10cm wide. The very robust clear plastic lid lifts off and locates back onto the grinder base smoothly and securely. Inside is a stainless steel lined grinding chamber and a sturdy 6cm stainless steel double blade. The overall feel is of a quality product designed to do its task rather than an emphasis on looking flashy or fashionable in the kitchen. 'Krups' is written in grey on the front at the base and directly behind this at the back is where the 70cm cable is connected. The mill runs at 180 watts. ~ Whole spices ~ Whole spices are of course dried seeds. I had read somewhere that many spices can lose a certain amount of flavour as well as nutritional or medicinal properties if stored in a ground form for long periods of time. Until this point I had usually bought spices ready ground. I experimented with dried dill and coriander seeds collected from our vegetable garden and ground a few with my pestle and mortar, then used within a few days either in baking or cooking. I was so impressed by the richer and fresher flavours of these spices, I've since then bought most of the spices I like to use in whole form or made sure I have plenty of seed produced in the garden to dry and then store in airtight jars. ~ Use and Efficiency ~ I have been using the Krups mill for nearly a year and am thoroughly impressed with its performance in terms of finely grinding the dried seeds of dill, fennel, cardamom, coriander, cumin, cloves and caraway. Also peppercorns, mustard seeds, cinnamon sticks (broken into pieces), dried thyme and sea salt. I usually place a heaped tablespoon of seeds into the mill, slide the lid into position and then simply press down on the black switch, the grinder will not operate unless the lid is located fully, a good safety feature. With a combination of pressing the switch down for two and four second periods the spices are quickly ground to either an evenly coarse or a very fine texture depending on which you require. The motor after over 11 months of fairly regular use still sounds as strong and powerful as it did when new. ~ Cleaning and storage ~ I use a little wooden spoon to remove the ground spices out of the mill so as not to get the mill scratched. The lid can be washed with warm soapy water and the grinding chamber carefully wiped clean with a damp cloth. At times it can be a little tricky to clean around and under the blade but this I would imagine is no different to other similar grinders. I have found it easier to clean than the Whal grinder, this is due to the oval shape which allows easier access with a cloth. The plastic lid has lost its transparency and become slightly opaque over the months of use and this does seem to be the case when spices are ground, an effect on the plastic from the oil vapours in the spices I would guess. This however I don't mind at all as the whole lid still provides an adequate view of the spices whilst grinding. The 70cm cable is in my opinion a sensible length for use on a kitchen surface, too much cable could be a nuisance whilst using the grinder and also cumbersome to store away. I tend to wind the cable around the base of the grinder but find due to the shiny plastic base, the cable slips and I need two hands to hold the base, cable and plug altogether as I put it away in a cupboard. A clip for the plug to attach to the cable would make this much easier, especially for those of us without large hands (my husband can deftly hold it all in one hand). ~ Conclusion ~ An efficient, well designed grinder for use with spices. I feel confident that after nearly a year of use this grinder will continue to perform well for a long time yet

Perfect machine for very fine grind
If you like your coffee ground very fine, you’ll love this little grinder. Ours has seen daily use for years. When I’m done grinding, I turn it upside down, tap the bottom, and gently pull the lid down (I do this over the coffee filter in its basket). I then dump the ground coffee into the filter. Works great. As I only use it for coffee I never clean it.

Great cost benefit for small coffee mill
I just feel like coffee blenders are way too overpriced. That being said this brand although not uber famous they are of quite good standards (do your research). I only grind coffee so its probably the best cost benefit in the market for this price? Its small and it can grind about a handful of coffee at a time which works for most people on a home scale I would say. Cleaning is not very practical as coffee can be greasy and heavy due to the oils so may need a brush to get all the coffee remains out but then again I just use it for coffee so I dont clean it often.
