Just what I was looking for

What can I say. It was easy to install and works great. This is just what I wanted for my laundry room/garage sink.

Great, quality drain assembly.

As other reviewers have stated, this drain assembly is quite deep. I am installing this on the smaller side of an offset, double-bowl sink. Since that side is also not as deep, this assembly works bring the level almost down to the other side. This is a three piece assembly: 1) drain, 2) strainer basket, 3) stopper. The assembly is well constructed. It comes with a large, plastic retaining ring (shown in the manufacturer's picture in grey)and both foam and rubber gaskets. The threads that the retaining ring fits to are plastic as well but are sturdy. I am not afraid that I will strip the threads at all hand tightening the retaining ring. The drain threads are also plastic and are well built. The stopper is the same stainless steel as the drain. There is a rubber gasket on the underside that creates the water stop. The strainer basket is stainless steel with a small metal hoop to pick it up out of the drain. Pros: This is really an attractive looking addition to a stainless steel sink. The stopper is much nicer than the plain black, plastic stoppers that I have seen come with drain assemblies and adds a sleek look to the sink. I also like that the assembly comes with a separate stopper compared to the baskets that you have to press down to stop water flow. Cons: I did have a slight problem with the included basket. The little hoop attaches only by pressure by protruding through holes on either side of the basket. As it does, it stops the basket from completely sitting into the drain. I will have to bend these up to allow for clearance to sit in the drain properly. I could also remove it completely but then I would have to work at getting the basket out whenever I need to remove it. I will update once I have modified the basket. Overall, I am pleased that I purchased this. It was roughly $10 less than the drain assemblies that I looked at from my local hardware stores and those had the integrated basket/stoppers instead of the separate ones that came with this one. Even if I wind up not using the included basket, this is far better looking than ANY that I have seen in the stores for the money. Given that I have remodeled my entire kitchen, it would be a shame to stop paying attention to the little details that complete the look of a kitchen. UPDATED 6-17-2013: Modifying the handle on the basket was a simple process. I used a grinding wheel to take off a bit of the end of the handle so that it wouldn't scratch the drain when inserted or removed. The same could be accomplished with a metal file or a Dremel attachment. We've been using the drain now for over 6 months and are very happy with it.

Restricts Flow Significantly

I will not reiterate some of the reviews below, which are very helpful. The only issue I have is design, but there is a work around. The well is only slightly wider than the basket. This means that flow is significantly blocked from the side of the basket (on portions of the bottom as well) and the result is that it takes very little detritus to cause blockage. The work around is to slightly lift the basket increasing flow and catching quite a basketful to empty. If the well was a bit wider and deeper, or basket slightly smaller, flow would likely not be reduced as significantly and the result would probably be a superior product. I will attach a video if one is every made.

Nice if you don't have or want a disposal

This is nice to have if you don't have or want a disposal. Not compatible with a garbage disposal setup. Seems pretty sturdy. In use now for a year.

it **DOES** fit on a granite sink.... but you'll want to take some careful measurements.

so this thing is interesting.... I bought this despite the claim that it doesn't fit on a granite sink. As it turns out, it does fit on mine just fine. Granted it's really a tight stretch to do it, and ideally in a perfect world, it would have about 2-3 more threads in length, but it did fit. Where I ran into problems tho, was that the basket comes down low enough that i's really hard to create a drain piping arrangement that keep this basket above the level of the drain pipe in the wall, and matches with the ISE. After about an hour of experimenting, I did finally get it to a good arrangement, but if I have a sink full of water on the ISE side, and I run the ISE until it's empty, it DOES back up a little bit of suds into this basket side. Not much tho. So.... it's great for capturing a good volume of solids, and there are no gaps around the sides for stuff to slip past it.... however you should probably verify the depth and make sure your exit pipe in the wall is low enough to stay below the level of the basket, and your ISE. I'd give it 5 stars if it had 2-3 more threads. mine does not leak, but still, it would be good to have a couple more. If you were takign my review against a stainless steel sink, i would give this 5 stars.

Looks and functions great

My disposal died and I am so glad it did (it was disgusting) so that I could replace it with the Kraus BST-1. It looks and functions fabulously. The metal sink hole insert, basket and top are all stainless finish, not shiny like chrome. I had purchased a used/like new unit from Amazon but it did not have the basket or top. I called Kraus US phone and they answered right away, were very patient and informative and sent the replacement basket and top as a courtesy so that I did not have to send the other back to Amazon. For the convenience of contacting by phone, I would purchase a Kraus rather than the other similar products through other companies, plus it appears that they offer a longer warranty. One thing that may be helpful is that during installation, the black rubber gasket fits into the plastic base with the ridge side up (the ridge is the side that contacts with the bottom of the sink). Also, the screw was plenty long for my porcelain sink but I had to improvise a tool to screw it in since it needs an unusually wide flat head screw driver..I had no problems with water draining through or backing up with the basket.

Minor design flaw

The cup rests on the bottom not on its rim, making a seal around the bottom and preventing flow of water out and air in… best case it drains very slowly. I put spacer at 3 points around the bottom to raise it about 2mm and break the suction seal. Krause may have packaged the wrong cup/basket, or it’s a design error. The sides of the cup should be about 3mm shorter.

Excellent quality, solid, reliable basket strainer drain

Purchased to go with my Kraus workstation apron front granite sink. My old Kraus sink in my last kitchen came with this basket strainer, and it was the absolute best kitchen sink strainer drain. Such a good design! Washed well, handled piles of water, tea, icecubes, food bits. Caught everything so it didnt go down my pipes. Was easy to scrub clean and never dented or cracked. Never came loose. Excellent drain assembly for a kitchen sink. My new Kraus apronfront sink had the option of very beautiful, and matching black colour, Kraus strainer drain assembly, but it doesnt have the useful basket design that catches all the food particles!! Function beats pure aesthetics, every single time, so I ordered this steel basket strainer instead. The last one looked great and worked great with 6 years of heavy daily use ( the Kraus granite sink as well) and I am looking forward to many years without issue of this basket strainer drain on my new Kraus sink in my new house.

Great product

Easy to install, I was able to do it myself without having to go out and buy anything or know a whole lot about plumbing. It works great for us, catches all the items that fall into the sink, and we can just dump whatever is in the basket into compost. Love it, didn't realize how much we needed it until we got it :)

Love this drain!

This thing is awesome! I love how it catches all the food debris so I can just empty it into my compost bin! Saves our drains and septic system! I installed on a Kraus sink so had no issues with it.

Very good quality and works well...

We had a hand-made soap stone sink made and this s.s basket/strainer worked perfectly. Very good quality. Very pleased we were able to find it on Amazon.
