Well-engineered, solid, thick, sleek, beautiful!

This is a great shower arm. It is much thicker than the normal arm made out of 1/2 inch pipe with chrome or whatever coloring on it. Instead, this arm is designed to have the female coupling from the shower head screwed up inside an outer sleeve. The result is that the shower arm is about an inch in diameter with the outer sleeve, and it presents a very sleek, one-piece appearance. In other respects, it is a normal angled shower arm. It has the same flow rate as 1/2 inch pipe, since it really is a 1/2 inch arm with a fat outer covering. The flange is pretty large - it's not your normal 2-1/2 inch wide escutcheon. This flange is 4 inches across, and it extends almost an inch out from the wall at the part where it joins the shower arm. When installed, the flange mates with the arm, producing a very thin circular seam around the arm. The shower head female coupler fits inside the shower arm's outer covering. As a result, the shower heat seems to grow from the arm. As long as your shower head has enough visual mass (wide enough, long enough, etc.) it will look good. If you have a tiny shower head coming from the end of this thick shower arm, it will probably look weird. One installation note: the instructions say to install a 1/2 inch pipe nipple so that it sticks out one inch beyond the wall. That is a MINIMUM number, not a maximum number. The shower arm screws onto that nipple, but the flange itself is 7/8 inch thick. So a 1 inch protrusion would give you 1/8 inch of threads. I got about 4 or 5 turns before the threads got tight, so you probably want 1-1/8 inch or so, maybe a little more if you use your "man hands" to tighten the arm onto the nipple. (I'm docking one star for this because getting that nipple back out, and replaced with a longer one, was a hellish nightmare.) EDIT: I have attached some cell-phone pics of the installation process. The showerhead is aKOHLER K-965-AK-CP Purist Single Function Katalyst Showerhead, Polished Chrome also purchased from Amazon. As you can see in the final "test," the large Purist shower head is stocky enough to balance the thick shower arm.

nice shower arm but a challenge to install

This looks really nice and is much heavier than a typical shower arm. But you need a nipple to install in most situations and they have very little play in the size maybe 1/4 of an inch.
