good replacement for 1978 era Alterna Kohler faucet and tub valvets

Had 3 of 6 faucet valvets that were OEM in 1978 in my master bath. Over course of a year replaced all with the GP330002 valvet. One replacement complicated by old valvet which were two piece coming apart and the brass cylinder was stuck in place in the faucet. Finally occurred to me to thread the bottom opening with a 3/8" tap and was going to use a bolt to remove but the act of tapping the opening loosened the cylinder and it came out. Also had minor problem with supplied stem O ring which was a bit thick, but subbed a thinner O ring and the install went fine. No leaks. Note: the plated brass 'washer' on the stem must be used or the faucet handle will not be a 90° turn but a 360° turn faucet without a positive stop. Kudos to Kohler for their online literature pdfs allowing ID of the right valvet to use in the old fixtures. One other thing: new valvet has a bit more friction to turn than the old. Note also others noting that if faucets are LEVER operated then you need the HOT and COLD valvets both, but if knob operated then HOT valvet works best for both hot and cold faucets.

too tight

As it comes, it's too tight. Not unturnable, but way tighter than old style compression valvets. Probably too tight for my parents' arthritic hands to be comfortable. If you're replacing valvets in an old faucet, you're probably handy at tinkering like me. So after some unsuccessful "external" tinkering and greasing, I disassembled the valvet. Under the external visible o-ring, there's a grooved washer and under that is a spring clip. I disassembled and greased it all up with plumber's grease. Many parts, so make a diagram or carefully lay out pieces and orientations. I didn't take the two internal rubber 0-rings out (just the external one to get to the spring clip) but just greased around them and everything else around the cylinder, particularly between the ceramic rotary valve and plate. Turns much easier now. Still not as freely as the old one, but well enough. No leaks. Overall happy with purchase and may but a couple more for spares. As another reviewer wrote, I'll probably just buy hot sides, as I've had many confused guests over the years.

Way to Go KOHLER

I lost a rather long reply -being my big thumbs bumped the wrong key Had a lot to say but will make it short. After purchasing the older style non-ceramic replacement valvets they started leaking within a few days. It would have been labor intensive and very costly for me to tear into our shower wall. Although I was a carpenter for the better part of my working days-- what we have would challenge the best and cost $$$$ The KOHLER GP330002 - 1/4 Turn Ceramic Valvets are slick ! Wanted to thank KOHLER for coming up with such for a solution to what I would think is a problem for many with older KOHLER faucets like ours . Fingers Crossed and I let out a big *sigh* the moment I turned the water back on... Not a single drip and holding dry since day one. Also love the smoothness-- --- of the 1/4 turn Ceramic Valvets -- Way to Go KOHLER - Thanks !

fantastic product

This is a great update for our kohler bath faucets. We had some banging and inconsistent flow with cheaper cartridge replacements. these fit great with existing bonnet after the brass washer and inner rubber washer were removed from the bonnet.

Hot stem for cold side?

If you have ROUND (or cross or square) handles, you will need a HOT valve stem for both hot and cold sides. Hot stem part number GP330002. Counter-clockwise on, clockwise off for both hot and cold. Same stem for both sides. If you have LEVER handles, then the cold stem part number GP330004 is what you want for the cold side. It will turn the opposite direction of the hot. So pulling both handles toward you turns the water on, pushing both handles away turns it off. FYI - The hot stem is the correct stem for the hot side for both handle styles.
