Rising Damp ?

I have a chronic rain water problem in one exterior wall, it originates from either around a clerestory window or where the porch meets the wall. While I waited for the next rain storm, I thought I would see if this moisture meter works. I took a 1x2 foot piece of sheet rock and squirted about a third of the paper backing with water - not too much just enough to dampen it. After about an hour, I ran the meter over the plaster side around the area that I knew was dry and got a reading of 0% moisture; no surprise there. But as I moved to the dampened area, I got readings from 19 to 25 % moisture. The next day, I checked the sheet rock with a thermal imager and it indicated dampness around the edges and a couple of faint,I assumed ,damp spots - there was absolutely no visible or tactile moisture on either surfaces. I ran the Klein meter around the same areas, and the moisture meter showed positive in those identical spots. I was quite impressed. So, my conclusion is your sheet rock walls should be around 0%; this meter will indicate even the slightest bit of residual moisture.

Test it right away...

3/29/2023 Update: Klein replaced my unit under warranty, but if course I had to pay the return shipping, whereas if I had tested it right away I could have returned it to Amazonfor free. The new meter seems consistent with my miniLigno pin meter. I'm pretty sure the sensing plate on the bad unit was set too deep and couldn't make contact with the wood, and looking at the new one I can see the difference. Original review: Purchased in July 2022 and tested operability when received, i.e. I installed the battery, turned it on, cycled through the modes and pressed it against some kiln-dried lumber in my shop. I thought it seemed odd that the moisture was so low, but didn't pursue it. Removed the battery and stored it in a shop drawer where I keep my instruments. Fast forward to January 2023, I got the meter out and checked some 2 year-old air-dryed walnut...meter indicated about 1.5% moisture, which is impossible. Measurements on other wood were all in the same realm of impossible. I have an inquiry submitted to Klein, but I see a lot of reviews with similar issue. I will update this review if/when I have something helpful to report.

I do drywall repairs for a living so it’s nice to have something to make sure there is no more moisture before we close at the patches..

This was proof my house was soaked - INSIDE!

I bought this because of a disaster. I had actually two contractors, because the first got fired half way through, who didn't cover my roof for almost a whole month during down pours and snow. My house was literally raining inside! I showed the "project manager" whom I thought was the contractor how much water was running down my walls. This is the space in my living room between two windows. He said, "what does OL mean?" Really? "OVERLOAD". It is overloaded with water! I just laid my hand on the wall and showed him all the water on my hand. Do you know what his response was? "It's our of my scope of work". This happened January/February of 2021. I am actually sitting here in paperwork up to the ceiling ready to go fight this head on to the lead people in charge of this program in Washington DC.. No lawyer or contractor will help. Long story and I can't say much. But it is showing proof that my house is ruined. It is a very expensive home renovation loan.

Easy to use

I’m trying to dry in a basement and have to make sure it stays under a certain moisture level. This unit is of high quality and is super easy to use.

Works great for personal use

We recently had a water intrusion in our house. We hired the pros to come in and do the dryout. I'm sure this isn't the same grade tool they use. Theirs probably has some certification or something to justify the $800 or whatever price they pay for it. I don't care if this is off by a few percent or something... it told me the same spots were wet, which is what I care about. I can't tell you how accurate the numbers are, but this thing works. I just press it against what I think is a dry area to establish a baseline, then look for moisture. We are staying at my mother in law's, and there was a leak under a cabinet, and I was able to use it to test for moisture before putting things back. Very handy. I read another review where someone used it to test if their laundry is dry. I'm going to try that next.

Useful Pinless Damp meter

Used to measure damp levels in my caravan. East to operate. Compared to a pinned damp meter and the readings are similar.

Delivered with a dead battery.

Tool itself works fine, supplied battery comes completely dead as other reviews have mentioned so be prepared to shell out more cash for a new one. ????

Not accurate for masony setting

Got this to measure moisture in the concrete floors in our new build about 12 weeks after they went down. We had the setting to masony but the readings were off the chart. We knew it couldn't be right as we had underfloor heating on during that time and the weather had been especially sunny. Got the builder and our floor installer to check using their moisture readers and the result came back fine - so we knew ours was wrong. Haven't used it since, maybe we got a dud but this was not accurate at all!!!
