Ig you have a flex drill bit - you need this!
A must have when using a flexible drill bit to steady the bit as it flexes!

Takes too much space to work.
I only use this for installing can lights. Not really good for anything else and it's not really good for cans either. Not enough room in 6 inch hole for this to work.

Good tool but your drill needs to flex too.
This is good sturdy tool but understand that you need a lot of practice and experience to use this right. I was able to get through first truss fine but going through the second one I drilled through the ceiling to carpet on second floor. In the end still better than patching up drywall holes. Not terrible but still a skill that you need to perfect. FYI.. my drill was 72 inch long.

Item works great
Item does its job at allowing you to be able to better control the bend in your drill rod, while attempting to drill through a horizontal firewall stud. Always a risk not being able to see where you drilling inside the wall, but not many options in this regard for secondary installers. But careful wire dectection before drilling is the best solution, measure twice, cut once.

If you get a flexible bit, get this tool!
I bought this for a project as well as a flexible bit, but I didn't end up using them. I was trying to drill through the top plate in an existing wall which already had insulation. The bit ended up getting caught in the insulation, so I didn't use that bit. That being said, the placement tool worked very well. When I first used the flexible bit without the tool, I could feel the end of the bit hitting the exterior wall. If I would have drilled it would have gone through the wall through the siding. I confirmed this by pushing an endoscope up the wall with the bit. I was also trying to use one of those bumper balls while doing this, but it was still hitting the exterior wall. I then grabbed this tool and used it to flex the bit towards the interior. It took a little force, but it worked great! I could move the bit so it was vertical and centered on the top plate! I confirmed this with the camera again. Unfortunately, like I said, the insulation made it so I couldn't use the bit. I have some other project ideas which I could use this bit, though, so it could still be useful in the future. So if you get a flexible bit, definitely get this tool!

Not needed
I must be missing something. I found that this was much more difficult to use than just guiding the bit with my bare (or gloved) hands. Maybe if you have some sort of very unique or tight situation, but those bits only bend so much anyway. It was 1 star for me, but it was built well which earned it two more stars.

Seems a little light
I'm still learning how to use this and the 54" flex bits I purchased to minimize the number of holes I have to make in our finished home to run media wires (speaker, ethernet, etc) and power to several new locations. So far I haven't made too much of a mess, but it is a learning curve using flex bits and while most times they say don't drill up with them, many of the spots I needed to use the flex bit and placement tool have been drilling through top plates. The tool does seem a little light, and I figure I will bend it before I'm done with all my runs. But versus cutting and patching a bunch more drywall I think I made the right choice.

do I really need?
I know you're supposed to use this with the auger, but when I do, it ends up just falling off. I'm sure it's just me that is using it wrong. Iv'e been able to drill with my 1" auger bit without this though, so I don't know.

Drill bit keeps sleeping on the tool. Agronomics are okay
I am agreed with the purpose of the tool and the material they have used to make. It is solid metal and works okay. The big annoying part is when you use 72 inch long bit, It is very difficult to bend the bit using this tool for average hight person. My hands are not super long so I couldn't hold tool in one hand and drill in other. Sothat is why bit keeps sleeping off the tool. They couldhave used rubber grip or something that would allow bit to turn also. May be I am expecting too much. I hardly ised the bit twice and the tool left hell lot of amount of scratch marks on it. So be aware of it. It shaves away some material from the but every time you use it.
