New version laser badly misaligned

Have an old version from 2017 that has held up to 4 years of abuse at work scratches and dents still works great. Like it so much bought one for myself. Used it first time out if the box and was driving my crew nuts getting a square string line. We did a tape line and found out the laser was feet off on a 40ft line. Brought out the old beat up laser still perfectly square. Poor quality control.

Accurate enough for me

I have learned the hard way that many measuring devices are not accurate enough to be useful for anything. My experience with levels has been no exception. My old laser torpedo level ceased operation and I needed a replacement. I chose the 40-6184 based on the fewer negative reviews and personal experience with my Johnson 24” beam level, which is accurate enough for my use. I purchased the level knowing there was a high probability I would return it. I was pleasantly surprised to find the horizontal accuracy acceptable. It is a 10” level and I had to place a .003” shim under one end to get the most accurate reading I could visually discern (flipping end to end). Projected to 10 ft that is about 1/32” error. Not perfect, but this is not a machine tool grade level. I am sure I introduce as much or more error in reading the level in a typical application. For the record, my 24” Johnson level needed .005” shimming. At 10 ft, that’s a bit under 1/32” error. The vertical level was off more than acceptable, but Johnson provides a calibration feature for it. I dialed it in to where I need it. Finally, I checked the y-axis laser accuracy relative to level. While the dot is larger than I would like to have, you just work to the center of it. I have an 8 ft surface flat to +/- .003”. The laser dot was spot on level over the 8 ft. I don’t have a reliable way to check the vertical and x-axis beam accuracy to the same confidence as the y-axis horizontal. I can’t speak to the durability and I agree with a previous review on the robustness of the laser switch. Its design quality does not match the overall craftsmanship of the level. Other than being heavy, I have no other complaints and recommend this level. Just check it for accuracy when you get it. There may be variation from batch to batch. If you don’t really need a laser, there are higher quality torpedo level options available in the same price range, but this was the best I could find in a laser torpedo level and I would have been willing to pay twice as much to get a better one. I give it 5 stars based on its performance relative to reasonable expectations for a laser level at this price point.

laser body looks well made

Laser itself seems to work ok. However the leveling base had a broken screw that raises or lowers a part of the base critical to leveling the laser body. I called them and they refused to sell me the screw even after I heartily agreed to pay for the replacement several times. Finally the lady said she called Amazon and the only solution agreed to between Amazon and her company was to sent the entire package back to Amazon even though the packaging clearly states that the consumer is not to send the item back to the point of purchase which was Amazon. So, not sure about other consumers interface with the company, but my interface was very unsatisfactory and I could not believe they would not let me buy a screw because it was still under warranty, The lady's explanation made no sense and failed any of my logic tests about customer service and business acumen. Visible in daylight outdoors but expensive.

This laser is visible in daylight, outdoors. It is also visible for a further distance than most. I don’t know exactly how far it is visible but I have used it 75ft in bright daylight. Lowe’s did carry a different brand that would do the same thing for a fraction of the cost but they are no longer available so I was forced to pay the high price for this one when I left my Kobalt (from Lowe’s) on a job site. The Kobalt was under $20 and this Johnson is over $100. Not happy about the price but it is a good product.

Good high accuracy tool.

Had a different brand for 14 years before I left batteries in it too long and destroyed it. This one is identical so expect it to last longer provided I remember to remove batteries before they burst. This tool is invaluable to any tradesman or handyman who needs to perform high accuracy work where plum is important. Perfect to determine if chassis or trailer framing is twisted or out of square.

BUBBLE LEVELS INACCURATE

CHECK THE BASIC LEVEL BUBBLES BEFORE YOU USE IT!! Bought mine to use to get an idea of where I'd end up after grade. Used it once in 4 months. Go to use it for the second time as a basic level,( mine broke) and the bubbles are WAY off... 1/4" ,each way and not corresponding to the opposite side of the level. It's good for layering stuff and that's it, it's not really a level. Ofcourse my chance to return it has passed, super unhappy. BE AWARE! CHECK IT BEFORE YOU USE IT!!!

Garbage

Vial fell out of unit after a few days use. Laser was way out compared to level.

Magnet for the smaller pipe.

This level works as it should for the most part but the magnets are a bit weak on smaller sizes of pipe, hard to make it stay on the side of anything smaller than 3". The side for me it the big reason for the laser off the top of the tool, helps to get the 90° angle from the pipe.
