Rough around the edges
The wood is a bit rough so I lightly sanded it to give a nicer feel. There’s no finish on the wood, making it susceptible to cracking over time so I oiled it. It’s only mineral oil so perfectly safe to use around food. The pestle is smoother than the mortar, although still had spots I thought would splinter so I wrapped the handle. Once all these things are done it’s a much nicer piece and I’d consider it great gift. For the price it’s exactly what I was expecting and these slight modifications are what I needed to be able to use this regularly.

THE WOOD IS ROUGH. I KNEW THAT FROM OTHER REVIEWS. I SANDED WITH 80,100 AND 150 GRIT. THEN I FILLED IN A SMALL SPLIT ON THE OUTSIDE WITH GLUE AND SANDING RESIDUE. WHEN THAT DRIED I SANDED IT LIGHTLY. THEN I OILED IT 3X WITH FOOD GRADE MINERAL OIL. I NOW HAVE A MIGHTY NICE LOOKING AND STURDY MORTAR AND PESTLE FOR $20.!! I'm happy!

Received unfinished item
Received a non-fully finished item, wobbly uneven base with some cracks in the wood. Had to polish it with fine sandpaper + oiled it a couple of times. Was surprised bc I love Imusa brand products.

Beware!
This is the second one I purchased and it is great. Had to return the first due to a huge crack. Beware that if you get a “good” one, it is great…but you may get some that are cracked and will have to send them back.

Rough & Unfinished
Great size, and shape but wood feels unfinished and the inside is rough and porous. Don’t feel it’s safe for food

Quality
Love how big it is! It’s also deep so when your crushing garlic or any other spice, it stays in the mortar. Great price and quality.

Works great needed sanding
Worked as intended. Made some great mojo for our pernil. I did deduct a star due to it needing to be lightly sanded first.
