I love this hydrometer! I have actually bought it twice because I broke the first one. I think that it is quite accurate, though I have no backup way to test. It does tell me which of my wines are more alcoholic and is easily converted to abv through the formula included in the directions sheet. The downside is that this is made of glass and will break if hit too hard on anything, including the bottom of a wine bottle because I didn't buy a graduated cylinder.

Worked Well...Until It Broke
Received the hydrometer in October and it worked well until I made 2 batches of beer on December 30 and had it in the drying rack after washing it. I had the weighted side down and my brew pot moved it as I was getting it off the drying rack and the scale portion broke off at the point where it meets the bulbous end. Pretty careless on my part, may not be a defect in the product, but it would be beneficial to take great care unless you want to buy more of them. As far as readings go, I use brewology101.com to create my recipes and it calculates the initial and final gravities based on the ingredients selected. The hydrometer was spot on everytime i've used it.

Fine hydrometer
Broke my old one while cleaning up AFTER a brew session (fortunately), so I ordered this one right away and received it in 2 days. Somewhat shorter than my old one, which I thought I'd point out because some reviewers said it was longer. It came very well packed in a large box, so there was no chance of breakage. In plain water, specific gravity reads about 1.001, so it is about as accurate as these things get. The one I got does not have a color scale, if that's important to you, but I only use the numbers anyway. At this price, I really should have ordered two to have a spare!

It just has to work, and it does.
I was looking for a cheap replacement for a 20 year old hydrometer that I broke recently (though the paper "scale" moved in it sometimes and I had to tap it back into place...I made do). Turns out that this one, despite it's price, is actually a nicer hydrometer than I had. Also interesting to note that people complained about it being a black and white scale, even though that was what was pictured in the listing when I bought it, and I would have been fine with it, it is actually the color coded scale that I received. For the price, it works, that's all I needed.

White scale
Works well. The picture shows a color coded scale, but the instrument I received only has black numbers on white paper. I docked it one point for that. There is a separate sheet of paper ( which you must not lose! ) that tells what the real S.G. reading is after you factor in the temperature. I scanned the paper into my computer so I can still use the instrument after I lose it. I bought this after breaking my other hydrometer with a really insignificant tap against its case.
