Not perfect but quite decent
I bought the MiniBrite 5x (PO-55) for reading values on small electronics parts, calibrating an old slide rule, and a number of other tasks that require a bit of magnification. It's not perfect, but I find the MiniBright 5x to be quite decent. I'm only giving a 4-star rating because this magnifier is not perfect, but it is quite good for the price. First, you can't expect such a magnifier to be incredible for $10. I'll explain in more detail. Also, refer to the attached photos (tax form fine print, slide rule, and capacitors) to get an idea of what it's like. Note that these photos may not be as clear as I could have made them, nor do they provide a totally accurate representation of what to expect, but they'll give you a relative idea of how well the magnifier and light work. Is the light amazing? It could be better, but it is decent and usable in lower light. It's certainly not going to light up a large area like a page in a book, but it will light up something small that needs magnification, and that meets my needs just fine. Could the battery door be more sturdy? Yes, but again, it's compact and very inexpensive. Low cost and inexpensive construction go hand in hand. Just be careful with the battery cover, and it will be fine. If you want a more sturdy magnifier, be prepared to pay much more. I've had many expensive TVs, DVD players, etc that had remotes with battery covers that did not stand the test of time. For that price, those remotes should have been bullet proof. This little, inexpensive magnifier has a somewhat fragile battery cover that could be improved. Just be careful with it. Annoying as it might be, if the little tabs on the inside of the battery cover break off, throw a piece of scotch tape on it, and call it a day. It's still a decent magnifier for the price. The thing is only 10 bucks! The 5x magnification seems to be reasonable and is pretty good. I'm happy with it. I have a 30x jeweler's loop, and there's NO WAY it's 30x! I've also read many reviews on other magnifiers, and many of those manufacturers over magnify their magnifier's magnification level (excuse the pun). I don't know how magnification levels are rated, but I'm reasonably happy with the 5x rating on this MiniBrite 5x. The lens is acrylic (ie, plastic), but the clarity is quite good and makes it appear to be glass. Take care of it, and keep it covered when not in use, and the lens should last just fine. Again, you can't expect too much for 10 bucks! For those of you looking for a magnifier to keep in your pocket to read menus and such, the MiniBrite 5x magnifier might not be for you. For menus that are very wordy, it might be slow going to read everything. For more concise menus, it might be fine. Don't get me wrong, it will magnify the words on a menu just fine, but it won't allow you to see much text at any one moment. You could have a wider viewing angle if you place the MiniBrite 5x about 1-2 inches from your eye and equally close to the page, but who wants to look like Sherlock Holmes examining blood spots in a restaurant? You might be better off with the MiniBrite 3x, which should provide a wider viewing angle (how much better? I don't know) but with a little less magnification. Remember, regardless of the manufacturer or quality of the optics, more magnification always means a smaller viewing angle, so it's a tradeoff. This is exactly why you must have your eyes so close to the eye pieces of binoculars--for the largest viewing angle. Lastly, I absolutely love the sliding cover! There's nothing worse than a dusty, scratched magnifier, so having this cover was the selling feature for me. Placing a magnifier in a sleeve or pouch when not in use would be fine, but having a sliding cover rocks! It's so convenient to have that cover. After buying the MiniBrite 5x, I noticed the LumiPop 5x (LP-66), which I kind of like better because of its cleaner design and separate light switch. The lens is probably identical. I suspect it's the newer design to eventually replace the MiniBrite 5x. I still like the MiniBrite 5x and will probably move it from my electronics work bench to the kitchen, and then buy the LumiPop 5x for use at my electronics bench to see if it's as good as it looks. Aside from the cleaner design and separate light switch, both MiniBrites are essentially the same, and I'd be content with either. Reading all of the reviews on similar magnifiers drove me batty. I hope this review helps your search.

Defeat those microscopic texts
Some parts of the labels on many products are printed in, I'd say, 3 points. Or perhaps even 2.5 pts. (The height of characters are measured in points, and 1 inch = 72 points.) In places such as supermarkets and pharmacies, the lighting may not enable me to read what is said even if I squint and try hard. This magnifier solves the problem, although I'd be more pleased if the lens was made of glass.

It works for me
Smaller lens than I would prefer. Right size for pocket or purse. Clear magnification and bright lights. Good buy for the price.

Makes reading easier
This magnifier works as it should. Makes words bigger and easier to see and read. The light makes what you're reading brighter. The small size makes it very portable.

it magnifies without mirror effect
it is little larger than i like, easy to hold, magnifies but you have to squint in order to read or vary the distance

Handy Reader Enhancers
I bought 3 cheap reader enhancers on Amazon as I have Macular Degeneration and was really pleased that I now have these. Just after having bought these, Later, I was taken to a specialised shop in Seattle for vision, as I wanted to find out if there were other contraception’s that maybe I should also get, but a similar range, with maybe 1 item I had missed, and some way more expensive items which I will comment on later. I bought 3 items, all at a great price between 8 and 12 $ each.: 1) Carson Multi-Power LED Lighted Pocket Magnifier (PM-33) 8$ 2) UltraOptix LED Lighted Folding Magnifier 3x 12$ 3) Mighty Bright Rigid Page Magnifier ( rigid – full page) 8$ The first 2 are similar, with the Carson pocket magnifiers probably being my preference as it is much lighter, thinner, and fits neatly in a pocket ( my breast pocket), At last at a restaurant, I can easily flip it out and read the menu, even in dim lighting conditions. I am super pleased. The Carsons also has a more modern look, as it is not so obvious you have a magnifying glass as the Ultraoptix . The Ultra optix folding Magnifier his much bigger, thicker, and while the lense is way bigger, it actually does not make that much of a difference. Maybe if you only had the 2 (Carson & Ultra Optix) , then for reading the bigger Ultraoptix would be good, but read on. For details, the Carosns switch is smaller and more difficult to get put “ON” by accident, but it does have special batteries, which cant be re-charged, so may be more expensive in the long run. Will have to wait and see how long the batteries last. Not too sure if I will use the 2 additional small higher magnifying screens on Carsons often,( at one side ), but if you are not getting a small character, for which you wish a greater magnification it is right there, and you don’t have to lift the magnifying, and hence the light does not go dimmer, (for MD a good light is essential). The Mightly Bright rigid page Magnifier is just great when you wish to read a magazine or a book, as you can see several columns at the same time, and if you are a fast reader, you can skip down paragraphs easily without getting lost. There is no light on the rigid full page magnifier, (uses a Fresnel system) so you need to get good lighting, which is not a problem at home. It is very light, but still does a great job. ( I am delighted with IKEA’s small let light for about 12 CAD each!, a powerful and concentrated light on a flexible tube about 18 in long) I was concerned about scratching the big flat plastic sheet, but actually just put in inside the pages of a magazine, and bingo, it is protected. No need to have a special cover. Next and future wishes. I saw Carson ezRead Visual Aide Magnifier (DR-200) at 73 $, but it is not wireless, so having wires linked to say an Ipad or tablet is not on, and it have the wrong connections for a tablet! But am pretty sure that soon we will se something come. I also say in the specialised shop fancy system that looked like a camera above a PC screen, which then was linked to the screen and you could magnify at the level you wished. ( you have the page flat on the desk, and see the text on screen, BUT the price was horrendous! 2000$. A straight small digital camera cost 100$ and a fixture to the screen would do the job at way less!! There were also small 3inx 7 in screens similar to a smart phone in apparence, which worked like a digital camera with a huge screen, and a few add-ons like convert a black print on white paper to yellow text on blue background, but these were also in the 500 + $ range, not that cost/benefit enough for me. Finally, in the shop, there was also a magnifying glass similar to UltraOptix, but where the distance to the page was fixed by a “box” which you place on the paper and slide alond.. This is not something you would want to take out of the house, but may decrease the arm fatigue of holding a small light glass at the right distance from what you are reading. It was also much more that the 10 $ range.

This is a very useful device. The 5X magnification provides a very useful help in reading labels.
The 5X magnification provides very useful help in reading small print on product labels, for example. The sliding cover protects the lens, when placed in a pocket or purse. It is a very convenient item to keep with you , wherever you might be encountering "fine print" in telephone books, restaurant menu pages, etc.

An almost perfect mini-magnifier.
It has a very bright LED light. The lenses are crystal clear. I would have rated this 5 stars except that I found the on/off switch to be too tiny and insensitive. I have to use my fingernail with (in my judgement) too much pressure to acivate it. However, on the positive side, it is unlikely that the magnifier's light will be accidentally turned on when it's in my pocket. Overall, I was pleased with ths product.

Best hand-held magnifier I have ever used
This is my second round of four magnifiers. I love them! I have 9% vision in my best eye and this product is a godsend. It fits perfectly in my pocket and in my hand. There is a bit of resistance on the slider to turn the light on/off and this is brilliant. I can also click the light on or off with one hand, depending on the need. The batteries last a long time and the lens is clear and of high quality. I have purchased other Carson products and I am happy and loyal customer.

Great compact magnifier!
Beautifully designed. Compact. Easy to take with you. Great magnifier with protective sleeve and if you install batteries, it illuminates the object you're magnifying...a neat little addition! Arrived quickly and safely. Great seller! Highly recommend!

Nifty magnifier!
I have given this little item five stars, because I am very pleased about its quality for the price, the fact that the main lens works especially well for enlarging print, the main reason I purchased it, it is comfortable to hold and the LED light works well. The required batteries are included with the item, just pull the two white plastic strips. The only possible deficiency is that it lacks a dust cover, but I'm willing to overlook that.
