Inaccurate Product Description! Accurate product picture. Here are the facts about this dissapointing kit...
The only reason I bought this kit is I wanted a combination (progressive depth gauge) roller file guide. I can freehand sharpen the cutters on my e-series 142 (3/8" pitch, low profile, 0.043 gauge chain) no problem. The roller guides take a degree of guesswork out freehand sharpening of the cutters (the "roll" if you're familiar with "roll, pitch, and yaw"), which is nice but not necessary. But the real value in roller guides is the combination progressive depth gauge for filing the rakers. This product listing says a combination gauge is included. The product pictures show separate cutter and raker filing guides. The PICTURE is right, the DESCRIPTION is wrong. The stamped sheet-metal, separate depth gauge is worthless and filing rakers is the only thing I need help with. Therefore this kit is, overall, basically worthless to me. The only reason I don't give it one star is everything else in the kit (that I don't need) appears to be pretty nice. Pictures below are of the pictogram "instructions." Combination roller gauges are pretty intuitive to use and the instructions are for a combination gauge, which is NOT included in the kit. Not in the least bit helpful. IF they included instructions for the depth gauge raker filing guide that was actually included in the package, then this kit might be worth it. But there are no instructions. One reviewer said they found instructions for this weird guide on YouTube. I've looked all over and found nothing; this depth gauge does not resemble any raker filing guide I've seen or found information about on online. It has two identical ends "mirrored" about the center (zoom in on the product picture). Cutters obviously all face the same direction, so how could a "mirrored" design be used? Also you can file rakers to different depths depending on if you're cutting hard or soft wood. I have to cut lots of both. A (combination) progressive depth gauge filing guide will let you select either wood depth and tailor the raker to its corresponding cutter. I file my cutters only to the point where they are in good form and sharp. I don't care if they are all the same length or not. Why would I remove good steel? Therefore I need a filing guide that lets my rakers all be different heights as my cutters may be all different lengths (and, consequently, all different heights from the bar). I returned the kit. I ordered it because I couldn't be sure what product I would get. Now I know. An now you know EXACTLY what product you will get. You judge whether it's worth it or not. If I hadn't bought a new chain for this saw already I'd just buy a new 3/8" pitch, 0.050 gauge chain with a new 0.050 gauge bar. You can find combination roller file guides with progressive depth gauge guides for those chains quite easily.

Easy to sharpen teeth to correct angle, but directions are hard to understand
The Husqvarna Filing Kit is easy to use, and the high quality steel file rapidly sharpens each tooth. The filing template ensures the correct angle on each tooth. However, I found the pictorial directions (no words) hard to understand (if you have sharpened chain saws before, you probably don't need the directions, but this was my first attempt). Fortunately, there was a Husqvarna video on YouTube (but for a different kit), so I was able to figure out how to use the sharpener. My sharpened chain works so much better! I thought the sharpening kit is good value for the price (a new chain would have cost about the same, and now I can sharpen my chain several times before it has to be replaced).

I have the standard profile one though that I bought after it was recommended by a logging instructor during a class I took ...
I will be honest, I haven't used this one yet since I purchased it. I have the standard profile one though that I bought after it was recommended by a logging instructor during a class I took as part of a CERT program to get trained on how to clean up storm damaged trees. When used correctly, these allow you to quickly sharpen a chain and have it work even better than when it was new. I bought the first one the same day I bought a new saw capable of doing some of the new methods of dropping trees that I learned that my consumer grade saw with it's anti kick chain couldn't do. I Made a cut in a log with the brand new chain. Sharpened it using this guide, just made three passes of the file on each tooth, made a second cut on the same log after this, it was noticeably faster. I grew up cutting firewood, I have been using chainsaws since my early teen age years and, thought I new how to sharpen one. The consistency gained from using a guide, and learning how to properly file the depth gauges on the chain. It didn't take long for me to decided I better buy one to use with the older smaller chainsaw I already had. I could still sharpen one without a jig and make it work, but you will save yourself time and energy while out cutting with one of these.

Even you can have razor sharp chains.
I normally don't use jigs of any sort but I like the ease of field sharpening my saw with this jig because you pretty much only have to worry about your angle as the depth is pretty much set. The setup and speed of using this jig is nice. I had to sand a little on the jig to get it to comfortably slide on and off of bar. The depth gauge is trash, the Husqvarna handle is one of the better handles I have come across if you use them. Files are adequate. For someone struggling to hand sharpen a saw or looking to properly reset depth and angle I think this would be quite handy. You can get a chain very sharp with very little experience with this jig.

Great except for depth gauge
Everything works well, however the depth gauge for the rakers is not very helpful. The gauge has the slots for the measuring and filing, but they are not marked to reflect which slot is for hard wood and which is for soft.

I love these sharpening tools.
I bought both the 3/8th and the 3/8ths picco tools. I don't use it for Husky chain though. It's great for keeping the teeth sharp and in decent shape. I try to buy chain that has the 30 degree marks on top so that after I have used this and have the teeth in good shape, I can run through the chain one more time with a diamond file free hand to get a razor edge. I have tried a couple of jigs and this is one of the best. The tool also kind of holds the teeth so that as you file it doesn't push away from you due to slop in the rail and screw up the effective filing angle.
