great noise reduction, cant get volume out of a phone
I think the speakers in this are just too big to drive with a phone. I am not at all blaming the manufacturer because I don't think they actually advertised it for this use and may have said they are good with a portable radio. I would pay extra for the bluetooth version if I were to do it again. my primary use is for yard work/power tools and i like some podcasts while doing so. for the primary purpose of hearing protection and amplifying background in the absence of impulsive noise they seem to be great. they are comfortable for me and I have a large hat size.

the Howard Leight Impact Sport is a great muff. It's light
A few years ago, most my trigger time was spent outdoors. For outdoor use, the Howard Leight Impact Sport is a great muff. It's light, low profile and very effective at reducing gun shots to a comfortable volume. I also had no problem hearing the people around me--in fact, it actually improved my hearing and could give you an advantage in a home defense situation (more on this later). Unlike some cheaper competitors, they also have an auto-shutoff, which kills the electronic functions if the muffs are left on for more than 4 hours. For me, this is critical since I am notorious for leaving on my electronics. I haven't had to change the battery on my impact sports after 2 years of use. Last winter, I starting going to an indoor range near my office to keep up with my training (too cold, snowy for an outdoor range in my neck of the woods). My indoor range is about the worst possible environment for hearing safety you can imagine. It's a 30 yard range made entirely of concrete, including the walls for each point. There are 5 points to a room and no limit on what you can shoot (up to 50bmg from a rifle, but shotguns are limited to slugs only). With 12 foot ceilings and NO sound deadening materials to speak of, you need to rely on you muffs entirely to keep you eardrums from exploding. In this environment, the Impact Sports are NOT up to the task. My first time indoors, I quickly discovered that the lmpact Sports offered almost no protection by themselves. I had double up with foam plugs before I could shoot comfortably. Unfortunately, with the foam plugs, the electronic hearing enhancement was almost useless. I ultimately purchased the Impact Pro muffs in September 2016 (so I have had them for over a year now). They Impact Pro offers essentially the same electronic hearing enhancement (with auto-shutoff) as the Impact Sport, but with a much heavier, bulkier profile that substantially improves the Impact Pro's noise reduction abilities when compared to the Impact Sport (31 decibel reduction compared to 22 decibel). My ears are safe, even when the range is filled with big bore rifles, AR's and shotguns. I can also carry a conversation with the Impact Pro on--just have to play with the volume a bit to find a good balance. The Impact Pro is, however, far from perfect. After switching to the Pro's, I had to adjust my cheek weld because these bulky muffs were in the way. I also find it can be tricky to wear these with a hat and eye protection because the hat and eye protect can cause the muffs to break their seal with your head, letting in dangerously loud sounds. I can tweak how I wear my glasses/goggles, but this can cause other issues by either reducing the protection from my eye protection or causing me to wear my eye protection in a way that makes it heard to aim well. In short, if I had a better, reasonably priced option for protecting my ears at an indoor range that allowed me to hear what is going on around me--without the bulk and compromises I have to make with the Impact Pro--I would jump all over it. If I am shooting outdoors, I would go for the Impact Sports over these every single time. However, for the purpose of shooting at a LOUD indoor range, this is really the only option I have come up with that fits my needs and costs less than $100 on Amazon. I know there are other options out there, but the cost of going to a custom made electronic plug is just not feasible for me. So, the Impact Pro's are my go to option for indoor shooting--at least for the time being. For this reason, I am giving them five stars (but with a caveat). Side Note: I also keep an extra pair of the Impact Sports, with fresh batteries, in my hidden gun safe in my bedroom for home defense purposes. The electronic noise filter on both the Sport and Pro muffs (I would guess they are almost the same, if not actually the same, electronics uses in both pairs) does an outstanding job of amplifying and enhancing low volume sounds. I can put them on in my bedroom, crank up the volume and hear my kids talking softly at the other end of the house. If you have never used a pair of electronic muffs, it can be quite starting the first couple of times you have them on. I expect this could give me a big advantage in a home invasion situation, where the introducers have nothing on their ears and I have the hearing of a fox. :) The Impact Sport and/or Pro are worth owning for this reason alone.

Fantastic!
Great ear protection on range. My first serious ear muffs. Love that it can be actively dialed in to listen to conversations and ambient sounds. I get easily startled at range, especially when someone is firing a hand cannon next to me, and these allow me to not be distracted while aiming. I specifically wanted the highest protection rating I could afford, and 30 NPR is fantastic for indoor range. They are comfortable, even with my prescription safety glasses on. The pads are nice and soft and fit my average size head just fine, with room to spare. Great product.

Top notch Ear Protection
I know they don’t look the coolest or the sleekest compared to the Howard Leight Impact Sport but… I’m not planning on shooting rifles or shotguns with these on. Which brings me to why I DID get these. As someone who will primarily be using these at an Indoor gun range, I wanted to get the highest decibel protection I could find. If I was only shooting outdoors, I’d probably go with the sports. Hearing protection is so important because if you lose your hearing you don’t get it back. Protect it! The power and volume control is easy to use. I could hear those around me much better than the first time I went to a range and was given ear plugs and ear pro and couldn’t hear the instructor. Bulky but totally worth it!

Works, but chunky
Ordered these, but knew immediately after seeing them in person they’d be too bulky and annoy me in getting good cheek weld, so I returned and ordered the Impact Sports which are much slimmer while only losing +/- 10 decibels. Worth the trade off in my opinion, but to each their own.

Effective and comfortable
Great for the gun range. Comfortable for a couple of hours at a time over safety glasses.

Perfect for indoor use
Okay, so most don’t come out and say this, but I will. These work just fine WITHOUT additional in ear protection for rifles in a 25 yard indoor range. Their only knock is they’re kinda big. Far superior to the Howard Leight Impact ones that many recommend. Those are lame. Buy these.

Works well but is big and fills up your range bag!!

Brilliant
I got these to replace a pair of passive (non-electronic) Howard Leight ear protectors, which I've used quite a bit for smallbore rifle shooting. Those were very effective, but of course it's hard to have a conversation or hear what someone else is saying while you've got them on. The electronic version is excellent, offering the same build quality and gunshot sound protection, but also letting you hear normal sounds and carry on a conversation. There is only one control, which turns the headphones on and adjusts the volume. With the volume fairly low you can shoot happily as well as hearing what you need to. With the volume high it amplifies the sounds around you to quite a high level. Not the cheapest (nor yet the most expensive) but very good quality for the money.

Strong enough for a .22 lacking for a 12 guage
I bought this model after careful review of several less expensive ones because I have a membership at a range and I was pretty sure people with high caliber firearms would show up and ruin my day. I was correct. I started with the Sport model because I had just bought a .22 revolver and figured it should handle it no problem. What I quickly determined was that people who used the less expensive Sport model at indoor ranges were having to double up with inserting ear plugs as well when someone came along with a high caliber gun. My range has no restrictions so I wisely decided to trade them back in for the Pro model. Having spent significant time at the range I can say with certainty that the Sport model would not be sufficient and that at minimum you really need something like this. For plinking with a .22 they muffle the sound beautifully and when someone with a .45 takes up residence next to you at the range you will be happy you upgraded to the Pro model. Quite frankly when a dude with a shotgun shows up I end up wishing I'd gone even higher end. 30db of suppression is excellent but 40 would be preferable if you're in an environment where people with 12 guage shotguns are going to sidle up beside you and start blasting away. You can't go wrong with the Howard Leight Pro but there is as always room for improvement. The only real downside to this model is that after about an hour it becomes rather tight and uncomfortable. A 5 minute siesta is enough to remedy this for another half an hour though.

Too big for shooting a Rifle.
I had never used noise canceling headphones before. So, I searched many reviews before buying these highly recommended ones. Not only for myself but for my wife and adult kids a well. I was so happy with them until, sighting our rifles at an abandoned gravel pit, I sat on my folding chair, leaned on my rifle rest and tried to look through the scope. Oops! These are way too big and will not allow me to rest against the cheek plate of my rifle to aim and shoot. I had to remove them and go back to foam ear plugs. I wasted my money. I'm sure these would be great for handguns though. They are useless to me, and I wasted good money just not knowing any better. I hope I can help someone else avoid this mistake.

Solid build, comfortable, high 30dB NRR
Out of the package these earmuffs feel like quality. I have a pair of regular earmuffs with a NRR of 31dB and I can't hear any difference in ambient noise with the power off on these. The mic's sound quite natural when turned on. They are large but not heavy and for me, don't seem to interfere with the rifle butt in a sitting position. I wear glasses and still get a comfortable fit with a tight seal. The lower profile electronic earmuffs post a rating of 19 to 22dB NRR and given that sound preasure doubles every 3 dB, I have opted for the highest (NRR) rating I can get. Haven't tried them at the range yet, I will update this when I do. You might want to check reviews on Amazon.com, there is a lot more. May 12, 2016... Used these earmuffs on an outdoor range last week and they worked perfectly. I'm very happy and would buy again. Note, I have not tried to play music through them... not a good idea while being responsible for firearms. May 21, 2016... I shoot 223 but spotted for a guy shooting 338 today and worked well in suppressing the report.

Two pairs later, my ears are still ringing. AVOID.
Update July 30: well, I took the replacements to the range, preparing to edit away my bad review, and the replacements sound EXACTLY like the other ones! I was shooting an AR15 and a 9mm pistol and my ears took some punishment. Given that I spent quite a bit of time and effort getting these, I guess I’ll keep wearing them - with earplugs on underneath. Sigh. AVOID THESE. Update July 13: I wrote an email to Honeywell, complaining that they’d sold me a dud. A few hours later, I received an email apologizing and stating that another one was on the way. I received it a few days later. If they work perfectly at the range next week, I’ll delete this review and write nothing but complimentary comments. I love it when companies have aggressively good customer service, so I added a star without having fired a shot. There’s nothing worse than a company that wants you to mail the product back at your cost, and then they’ll consider whether they might do something. Honeywell gets an attaboy from me. Now, if only the earmuffs work. ;-)) ————— After reading the reviews for these, and having used passive basic earmuffs for lots of shooting over the last 35 years, I finally broke down and bought them. When you crank them up, they amplify ambient sound and voices slightly above normal hearing abilities. Not a huge amplification, but noticeable. Where I was underwhelmed was on the range yesterday. I went with my kids and some guests and we banged off a whack of .22, 7.62 x 39, and 30-06. I even stood behind my guest while he fired the range’s 50 cal. The damping was mediocre - it took the highest volume ‘bang’ away, but was still fairly loud, just shy of where my ears would be ringing. It was much like shooting with a cheap set of passive earmuffs, and the voice amplification didn’t make up for how much it lets through. I have short hair, and it was fitted properly, so it wasn’t me, it was the muffs. Unlike one of the other reviews, my ears did take some punishment from the 50, and the 30-06 was uncomfortably loud. I borrowed a 9mm pistol and tried out a neighbour’s AR and they weren’t too bad, but anything with some serious power overwhelmed it. ——————————————— Update 2018.06.29: I wondered if I’d been fair to these, so I took them to the range today and wore them for a few hours of only firing a 9mm pistol and approached it scientifically. It didn’t matter whether I cranked them high, low, or off, the noise reduction was very poor - causing me actual discomfort from the noise. I swapped them 2/3 of the way through with a pair of old-fashioned Peltors that my son uses, and the much.cheaper Peltors are clearly far superior. I’m convinced my hearing is being damaged wearing these. Avoid. Even worse - my effort to be fair in my review pushed me past the 30 day return window. I guess I’m stuck with this ear damaging junk. ____________ Update July 2nd. I just got a nice email from Honeywell, who said that they’re sending me a new pair immediately to replace my defective pair. Nice customer service - I’ll update this review if it turns out I just got a defective pair.
