Extreme wear-resistance, especially when grinding, sharpening and polishing.
I got this to make a wood-turning tool called a bedan. Last year I made one out of M2, and I wanted to try M35 to see if it would hold an edge longer. M35 is basically M2 which has cobalt added to improve the wear-resistance and red-hardness. The downside of wear-resistance, of course, is that it takes a lot longer to grind, but a bedan is a pretty simple tool to make, and the red-hardness means you can do most of the grinding on a bench grinder or other high-speed grinder without affecting the hardness. The thing I wasn't prepared for was that the blank had scratches on all four sides and the sides weren't perfectly flat, and, for mainly esthetic reasons, I give my tools all my tools' flat surfaces a high polish with a series of diamond sharpening stones. This has to be done by hand, and in this case it took forever.

Definitely hard
Grinding one end to a parting tool takes quite a bit of time compared to standard steels that I normally grind for other things. This should perform nicely when I get it all finishe.d

The moment you think you messed up...
I didn't measure nor check to see the size of HSS I needed, so I got a one smaller than I'd expect, But still did its' job.

A decent piece of HSS
Purchased for metal turning. The metal quality was decent, ground easily, and held a decent edge. Used to to aluminum, and cold rolled steel.

Seems to be as advised.
5/16 tool works great on the Chinese mini lathe.

Exactly what they are.
Not sure how you can mess up a high speed steel blank, but these are exactly what they are supposed to be.

Use as "Reed Geek" on woodwind Reeds (Saxophone)
Awesome! Although I haven't used it to turn/cut metals - it does what I wanted it to do, and that is - to repair/rework Saxophone reeds (made of Cane/Bamboo) at a fraction of the cost of a custom tool marketed just for that purpose. What I received was well polished with straight and sharp edges. I was able to use it straight out of its pouch. I ordered one more. Hope I find the same quality finish even on the 2nd one. One thing to note: the plastic pouch it comes with is very poor quality. But then, that's secondary....
