A Budgie Favorite

Budgies love this toy so much, I had to order one for the cockatiels.

My cockatiel loves toys in general, but he is absolutely obsessed with this in particular. He plays with it, cuddles up to it, sings to it, sleeps against it, and tries to destroy it like it hurt his mother... He still plays with his other toys enthusiastically. He is pretty well-behaved, but I took away this guitar toy for a week or two because I was concerned that the reflection might mess with his hormones and his attitude. BAD. IDEA. It backfired completely. He stopped singing almost completely, to me, my husband, his reflection in the mirror. He stopped singing in the mornings and stopped singing for fun. He started biting (not just warning nibbles) and started getting very territorial over his cage. He was less in the mood for getting scritches from me. Basically, taking away this toy actually caused him to become aggressive, instead of nicer. I still don't understand. But I will buy a backup because my bird would be very unhappy if it ever went away. Despite the fact that my bird loves this toy, I have to deduct a star for the quality and durability of this toy. I suggest that as soon as you get this toy, take pliers and make sure all the links are secure. Even then, my cockatiel destroyed the chains and the balls in two weeks. I ended up getting some sisal and some wooden beads, and replaced the chain and plastic balls with it. But it's just not the same, because the rope doesn't go up and down and make chain noises as much... The broken links can be a safety hazard. Also, the blue neck piece eventually broke off from the silver body, so I very carefully put a minimal amount of glue and glued it back together. I wish I didn't have to do that due to safety reasons, but my bird can't get to the glue. Since budgies are actually more energetic than cockatiels (budgies are known to bully cockatiels), this toy really can't hold up very well for any parrot. A very good design, very engaging to birds, but not well-executed. I'll buy a few extras so that I can replace it once or twice a year. But I will have to watch it carefully when it's new to determine if it becomes a safety hazard, and eventually replace the chains with sisal.

#1 for Budgies that lasts

This guitar toy has been my three budgies favorite toy for almost a year. I purchased this as a replacement: I broke the one we got as a gift via over-tightening. Purchasing as a replacement is well worth the money: the bells just recently started to show rust after an hour soak in water a week over 10 months. Water drains out of this toy well, so I don't worry about soaking it in a warm soap bath and rusting or incubating mold inside. My birds spend about an hour each scratching their head feathers on natural brantches and preening each other, yet they all enjoy hanging on the side of the cage and tuning the gituar with their noggins for a good 15min/day. The male likes to court his reflection in the central mirror and all three shred the bells. One of the females will "tune" it with her beak for 30min, we joke she is preparing to play "Free Bird", extra long version. Now that I've received this replacement, I'll be purchasing another as a backup, just in case I overkill again (and I did overkill tightening when I broke the last one). They are spoiled rotten with a variety of stimulation and objects to interact and I never expected this toy, which was originally a gift, would be the favorite.

Budgies were unsure if this for a while but now can't keep away from it. They love pulling the chains and letting them drop down again and it doesn't make a loud irritating sound which is always a bonus!
