definitely works well against rain, perfect to wear over a hoodie or sweatshirt
this looked huge when i first got it. i didn't realize its a shell system and meant to be worn over additional layers. knowing this i understand why its oversized. the outer is really nice and waterproof, something i appreciate living in Oregon. it isn't really a warm jacket by itself, it lacks really thick insulation for that. but throwing it over a layered outfit seems to help trap the heat and actually keeps you decently warm. i really like the large pockets and oversized pulls as i hate digging around trying to find the tiny pull in the rain or snow. i don't really like the pockets opening at the top as it makes it difficult to put your hands in them comfortably. i get that they are more secure than having side opening ones but would have appreciated some. also, the price seems a bit steep given that it doesn't have any real warm lining to it. its a good coat but its almost priced the same as a fully insulated coat.

Great jacket for layering, plenty of nice features, but just a little room for improvement.
This is an impressive jacket. I have never really seen a real shell jacket before, so to say I was impressed would be an understatement. I have seen the two-part jackets before, but they didn’t have these features. It is amazing that a jacket is able to breathe well and yet be windproof and water-resistant. Many of the features are not super unique, but what impressed me was the number of features that are able to be combined in the same jacket. The cuffs on the jacket were one of the coolest features that impressed me. The cuffs extend far enough that there is no gap to allow warmth to escape from the gloves into the coat. something so simple, but I've never had it on one of my coats. Another really nice feature is the way the coat has oversized zippers to make it easier to use when wearing gloves or in really cold weather. I know that when I put on my gloves, I cannot work most zippers, and when it is cold out, I certainly do not want to take off my gloves to do it. I also really like the two-part hood; there is the component that covers the neck and face, and then the hood goes over that. That will keep faces dry and protected from any drips that can run off the hood. The design of the coat is to go over other coats, so this coat’s goal is not thickness like some other winter coats. There is a lot of warmth that can come from layers, and that is how we dress down here; we dress in layers year-round. I didn’t understand it at first, but after the first year, I was layering as well. I've discovered how much I adore solid jackets with a thin layer of insulation that are easy to layer. There are a few features I am not sure about, such as the bottom of the coat. There are tighteners for the hood to keep the breeze out, and there are protectors for your hands, but the bottom is open. It feels like there should be something there to cinch it in and keep the wind out, but I am not seeing one. The jacket should be windproof, but it looks like it can go right up the back of the coat. These are popular with snowboarders, so I am wondering if the snowboarder lands on their backside, with the snow going up the back of the coat as well. The other part I like is the wide pockets with the covering; that way, your gloves don’t fall out and you don’t get rain or snow in your pockets. However, I do wish there was an easier pocket to slide your hands into to warm them up. Some coats will have a second front pocket for that feature. This is, of course, just a personal preference. When I am cold, the first thing I do is put my hands (gloved or not) in my pockets and pull my coat tight around me. This coat doesn’t support that movement very well. The last part is the fabric for the hood and neck; personally, I prefer something that is a little softer to be rubbing against my face, especially when it is cold. This would be the perfect place to have a fleece lining or just a strip of a softer fabric for that little part. Overall, this is a solid coat; the fabric breathes well; there is nice protection against the elements; and it is washable without messing up the weatherproofing.

Do you like pockets?
Do you like pockets? Then this is the jacket for you. There are five external pockets on this jacket, four of which will swallow a cellphone, wallet, and keys without any trouble. And that isn't even mentioning the internal pockets. If you need that kind of compartmental storage, well, this is probably a good choice in terms of a jacket. I also really like the thumb hooks on the expandable cuffs (similar to what you see on running hoodies) that ensure a seal between your gloves and the jacket. It's a really nice bit of design. Combined with some elastic cord that runs along the bottom of the jacket, this really makes a nicely sealed shell. But it really is just a shell. The jacket actually provides little warmth in of itself and primarily protects from rain and wind. This is part of the idea, of course. You are supposed to wear layers underneath the jacket. Despite that, I was surprised by how little insulation it actually provided without a decent sweater underneath. Also, the so-called "hand warming" pockets are awkward to use. In summary, with a warm sweater, base layer, and some good gloves, this is a great piece of an overall system for keeping you warm. But I would like at least a little more individual utility as its lack of warmth, limits its use, ironically, to the coldest days when I bother to really dress up against the elements. A similar Columbia Outdoors jacket that I have is quite a bit warmer, and I tend to use it unless I am really kit-ed out to face the snow.

warm and dry
This is an excellent jacket. It fit my husband perfectly and he raves about the comfort. We live where there are milder winters so this shell part is all that he needed. It keeps him dry in the rain and warm in the coldish weather. It has pockets everywhere.

Arctix Shield Shell System Jacket
This Arctix Men's Shield Shell System Jacket is lightweight. It's perfect for layering. I was hoping it would have a bit more insulation inside of it, but it keeps me dry in the rain. This jacket is well made, and it has plenty of pockets to keep my things in when I'm wearing it. It fits, as expected. I like the color and also that this jacket helps to shield the wind and rain when I'm out walking my dog or running errands.

Good light jacket made for layering
This jacket is designed to be used as part of a layering system for which it works quite well. This jacket is designed to be the outermost layer and, as such, you would expect it to have comfortable pockets in front, that you can slip your hands into. This jacket does have front pockets but they have the opening at the top rather than on the side so they are hard to get your hands into. Also, I got a large which fit me well except that the back stretches over my shoulders when I reach forward. I wish the back had pleats. Otherwise, I really like this jacket and recommend it with the above caveats.
