Pleasantly surprised. Works OK
I wanted a metal one, as this is, because of the much finer resolution. I was concerned that it might not work well, because of all the negative reviews. Well, it is a bit fragile, it isn't easily adjustable if at all, and it's a little bit stiff, but it works fine. My recommendation is to baby this thing. I'll probably make a box for it. It's not going to stand up to rough use, and if it falls apart I can see it being miserable to try to get back together. But again, it works. My use for it? To get contours for various wood trim things or obstacles when replacing trim or making moldings. For that it should be perfect.

Works great, very happy.
I bought this when I built a flintlock rifle. Worked great on comparing parts of the wood on the stock for matching shape. I liked it. I just ordered a second one for some revolver grips that I am making. I wanted a second one to help with profiles. General makes nice stuff. Their metal rulers are great too.

Good as received
General used to offer high quality but cost-effective tools made in the USA. To stay in the same market niche, they've had to go overseas for manufacturing like almost everyone else, and on some things quality has suffered. Their USA-made tweezers were great, but the overseas-sourced ones can be awful. Not sure where this is made – not marked on the tool or the packaging that I can find. But at least for this example, the contour gauges are still okay. The finger pitch is almost double what it is for one of the 10”/250 mm Taiwanese plastic contour gauges, making it a nice companion to those, for smaller work. The stiction of the fingers is just right, but that will probably change with wear – and there is no adjustment. To those who bent fingers or had fingers slide completely out the slot: it is layout tool – you have to take care of it, and if you didn’t, that’s not the tool’s fault.

Requires DIY modification to be useful
The metal pins are quite thin, which theoretically gives this contour gauge a better level of precision than most of the other ones out there. However, they are held in entirely by friction, achieved by having the two ends clamped down ridiculously tight. This means you have to press the gauge against whatever you’re taking an impression of very hard, which risks damage to the thing you’re measuring. Worse, the friction between pins so high that sometimes adjacent pins get pulled down a little when the pins next to them move, which gives less fidelity to the impression. The pressure you have to use to take the impression can also bow pins at the edges, which also reduces fidelity. And finally, because there is no lock, you risk messing up your impression as you trace it. As someone else in the comments said, very carefully prying up the crimped edges to reduce the friction can improve most of these issues, but it’s a fine line between too tight and too loose. All in all, if you already bought one you can take steps to improve your experience, but if you haven’t bought one yet I recommend getting something better.

Not bad expecially for the price. Does the job but does have a few minor concerns.
It does a pretty good job at taking an imprint expecially if you help the pins a bit. I havent had a lot of experience with these tools so Im not sure these are the normal problems these things have. I got this one over the plastic thicker ones in hopes the tiny pins would bring more accuracy but at least in this one its all revited together very tightly so a lot of the pins stick together leaving gaps or ledges where there were none when taking the inprint if you dont carefully help seperate and push or pull the pins to help it. Also the pins have no stop on the ends of them so you have to be careful not to accidentally pull pins through because you can pull them straight through and out of the device (Im not sure if they are easy to put back in). As I mentioned before this thing is revited together so there is no taking apart by screws to fix or adjust. Another thing I didnt think about when buying but realised after leaving this thing for awhile, that any moisture will cause the pins to start to rust. A quick sand and a little oil will probably fix this and maybe make the pins a little smoother but I havent tried that yet. All in all its not a bad tool, it does its job well, expecially for its price.

Will fall apart if not super careful handling it
The media could not be loaded. Like that it gives detailed measurement. But this has already fallen apart 2 times and I held it by the tiny metal pieces and they fall right out. Lost a few sticks

Does what it's suppose to do quite efficiently.
My next-door neighbor who is a retired doctor just installed wood flooring in one of his rooms. He had a rounded (odd shaped) corner (bullnose) where he wanted to install a quarter round vinyl baseboard. The problem was he did not want the standard way of cutting angle pieces to follow the curvature of the bullnose. He was told by someone at the local HD store that these vinyl mouldings can be heated with a heat gun to form the desired curve. And that's what he wanted me to do. This tool helped a lot in copying the exact curvature and with the help of a heat gun, we were able to accomplish what he wanted. I copied (traced) the curved on a piece of 1 x 8 scrapped wood, then cut the curve with a jig saw. I then nailed that piece of wood on top of a wider piece and used that to curve the vinyl moulding. So I guess he's a happy bear! lol

Good buy with fast shipping
I really like that this model had so many pins per inch, it makes it so much more useful than the typical plastic gages out there because you can get a much more accurate representation of the profile. The only down side is that they are just pins as opposed to flat plates so as you apply this to a profile you have to be careful that you push straight down or else the pins may bend. Another down side is that the pins are suspended in the middle of the gage, making it difficult to get the profile of something on the floor. Last, as I was looking into this sort of thing I could never find how the gage keeps the profile. This gage keeps the profile through friction between the pins and the casing. Despite all this gave it a 4 because probably is close to the best you will find and arrived early.

Very Inaccurate - I sent mine back
The pins do not stay parallel or in place- I took this on site to measure some architectural profiles and about 10 the pins actually dropped out in front of the client which was highly embarrassing and looked really unprofessional. Terrible quality.

Not fit for purpose. I want my money back!!
This is utter rubbish. When you use it the pins bend and move around to the sides diagonally so you cannot get an accurate shape. There are not specific holes for the pins, that are all just shoved in the same gap and pins also fall out when you try to use it as there is nothing holding them in at all. I spent more time trying to straighten out the pins and put them all back in than doing my DIY job! Don’t waste your money!!! I cannot return this now as I had it to long before I needed to use it and it is too late for a refund even though it is not fit for purpose. I WANT MY MONEY BACK!

Good but a couple of issues to note.
It definitely saves time and mistakes as the hole is always 5mm from the edge. Also, as it is clamped down, there is no chance of it moving during drilling - so great. But 2 demerits: 1) The guide holes did not line up with the (Blum) hinges I was using. I don't know which manufacturer's hinges the guide holes are designed for. 2) The design does not allow for certain 35mm drill bits to be used. I bought an expensive Bosch drill bit and the shaft changes diameter right at the point where the locking screw (to set the depth) locks in. So, if you want to use an alternative drill bit to the one provided (which does the job okay but will blunt), you will have to hunt around for one with a longer thick shaft section.
