You get what you pay for.
I had a fitbit smartwatch that I used for a long time - UNTIL I started surfing. Even though they claim to be ocean friendly - 3 times surfing and my fitbit died. I purchased this for the surfing features and it has been going strong since I purchased it. Expensive, but worth it if you want to track your sessions.

not really a surf watch
I really wanted to like this watch- it is ok, for surfing i checked it against the ripcurl gps2 (one on each arm for several sessions) and the gps2 is much more accurate and gives better info in the water as well as better tracking downloads. You can customize the face to show various things while you surf but not some obvious ones like wavecount. They jam a lot of stuff on the screen so it is hard to read in the water if your eyes are as old as mine. When I call Garmin to ask about things like this every single time they are knowledgeable and pleasant- they always agree that the watch should be able to do the things I ask but that they are unlikely to change it. (They are amongst the best customer service people with whom I've dealt- too bad the info doesn't reach the engineers.) The solar charging is not that good, the body metrics are fun but i wonder about that accuracy as well. There is a lot of things you can do to customize the watch- it is very complex. It is a good all-around watch. Not so much for surfing.

Died in 5 months
Watch was nice for 5 months until the battery completely died. All of a sudden, standard battery charge went from 2+ weeks to 6 hours from full charge to dead. Similar complaints online seem to be related to a recent software update, which makes little sense. Customer Service generously offered to send me someone else's refurbished watch as a warranty replacement. For a $300 watch that lasted 5 months, I would at least expect a new replacement. Would have much preferred a full refund as I now have zero confidence this thing will last.

Almost useless for surfing
"You had one job!" Get used to seeing the "no tide data" displayed if you bought this watch for tide data. If you google it, this is a recurring problem. If you are buying this watch for HR, Step Counter, knowing what the current temperature is, digital compass, the "wave counter" (and let's be real you know you're just going to lie anyway about how many waves you caught) then this watch is for you. If you're buying it to be able to tell the tides, then this watch sucks. I got it to display the tide data for about an hour, then took it out on a paddleboard session and 15 mins in the tide data cuts out. Tide data only displays while it's in earshot of the phone, which is pointless because how often do you bring your phone out while doing watersports? How a $100 tide watch can store 100 years of tide data, yet this $450 watch can't store 2 hours worth of tide data, is beyond me. The way this should work is either (a) the watch should store decades worth of tide data and when the gps signal recognizes where you are it snaps to that dataset and stays there until it recognizes that you've moved, or (b) the watch should pair with the phone and sync up and store at least a few weeks worth of tide data once it realizes where you are. Tide data can be accurately predicted out hundreds of years, which is why the old school watches work so well. This watch could've been awesome because in my use case where I live on the bay and surf on the ocean, there are no tidal buoys that a surf watch recognizes here on the bay - so my hope was this watch would have displayed the tides in maritime areas where there is no surfing to be had, in addition to all the well known surf spots. The watch not being able to store data and being so reliant on the phone is a known and glaring issue that IMO invalidates the watch for the use case it was set out to achieve. Other gripes: On other less expensive gps surf watches you also get swell period, swell direction, and surf height - which this watch doesn't have. At this price point, it would also be cool to not only get present conditions, but some limited forecasting. My takeaways on surf watches in general: None of them have what you'd really need to make a great forecast, so what they really need to come out with is an internet watch where you can just download all the apps you want and use those. The most basic of watches that just tell you the tides, sunrise/sundown, etc., are nice because they always work and that little bit of info is nice to have. Surf sessions rarely last for more than a few hours. Currently no watch replaces forecasting on several different apps / websites, and a watch at present can't replace this. So there really is no need to dork around with a watch mid-session, and doing so may actually prohibit one's ability to not only enjoy themselves but also to learn to read the water and the weather for changes.

Great gift for surfers, husband loves it!
I wanted to get my husband a smart watch for his birthday but I didn’t want to get him an Apple Watch because i didn’t think he needed all those features and the delicate screen and charging requirements don’t really fit his lifestyle. I did a bunch of research and settled on this watch so I took a gamble on it. He won’t take it off! There is a lot to love about this watch but some of the main things my husband likes is the solar charging. He is outside in the sun a lot and this prolongs battery life! Great for someone who is notorious for not charging their things. The watch also has a lot of health information, like heart rate, sleep data, calories burned, just to name a few. Of course the surf features he loves as well! Super stoked that he loves this watch. If you have a surfer or water outdoorsman in your life, now you have an awesome gift option for them!

Major upgrade from my Vivoactive 4S that was torn off while surfing. Less of a smartwatch, more of a G-Shock that gets notifications, but that's exactly what I wanted, just didn't know it. Touch screen gets annoying in the water anyway, just having buttons that drive the OS really works way better. Not sure I would be stoked to pay $500 for this, but it was a deal at $330! Surf tracking works really well. Battery life is ridiculous, I think I've charged it two or three times in the month and a half or so that I've owned it. Just a ridiculous amount of runtime since it does not have a touchscreen and a color display.

tide automatically updates and waves are recorded
So I wanted a tide watch. This is better than the Rip Curl watch that I had to replace the batteries on an annual basis and better than a couple other tide watches that never really were accurate. This watch connects to your start phone and tracks the waves you catch. I think the wave count picks up a wave here or there that I might not have caught all the way, but that's OK. I'm happy with this watch and would buy it again if it were stolen.

Tide & surf features
If you want a surf watch to provide reliable tide (yes, a most basic requirement) then this watch is NOT for you. You can see the photo to share my most regular readout. And if you want Support anytime outside USA Monday to Friday 9 to 5 then this company is not for you. I had to update the software, reset to factory settings, follow videos, did chat & email ( never responded to) & still got the result in the photo. The watch seems completely dependent on syncing to a smart phone app which begs the question ….. why have the watch ? I sent it back & Amazon readily agreed to refund my money. It’s a premium price delivering a sub-standard product & no support. Go & buy Rip Curl for 30% of Garmin price.

Wave count very inaccurate
I selected this product specifically for recording my surfing - I have found that the wave counting is very inaccurate- it records on the high side e.g. I think I caught 5 waves and the device recorded 23. It does the same high count each time I have surfed. I notified Garmin Product Support who are looking into it - this was several weeks ago and aside from stating they had received data and were looking into it I have received nothing further. On the plus side this watch seems robust and records a heap of other stuff. All other features I am happy with however as stated I specifically selected the watch for surfing and my experience is that this product does not deliver as advertised.

Provides completely inaccurate information
Over time, the accuracy of the information has diminished. Surfed the other day and caught around twelve waves, the watch showed one wave. Went for a 2 kilometre SUP but the watch showed just over one kilometre. The estimate of battery life is also not accurate unless you are spending time in the sun as the solar charging does work. Overall this watch does not provide the functionality that is suggests.

Good product but...
The quality of the watch is amazing, the display is clear, functions are easy. However after a month of use, I can say that one thing bothers me quite a lot, it's the innacuracy of the altimeter and the barometer. I basically have to calibrate both of them multiple time daily, and I'm not the only one apparently. That's the only caviat with this item!

Pricey for what it offers
I bought the watch for its surfing application, which by the way is good. However the watch does not provide any other different capability than a standard sports/smart watch. It would be good to have the option of changing screen backgrounds and colours. The wrist band is quite delicate for a watch that has to be exposed to rough conditions.
