Poor instructions make it time consuming to use the first time
This bit cuts very well. My issue with it was there were no instructions on how to set the bit to cut and how to cut the second piece. It took awhile, but I figured out where to set the fence to get a good cut. The first attempt at the second piece was a failure (be sure to test first). The limited instructions say 'just flip it over'. Well, it appears there is more than one way to 'just flip it over' because I did it wrong the first time. I still can't quite explain it, I think it might take a few more joints to update this with better instructions.

My workshop won't ever be the same
The bit uses two set of knives one tooth offset from the other. It took quite a bit of setup for the router to do the two finger joints. Basically, you have to create a (wood, plastic) shim, 2.1mm thick and put it under each piece that you will joint. That is, the first pass will give you the left profile, if you look at Freud's image for the joint, below the image of the bit, then turn the piece around horizontally, put the shim underneath it and you get the right-hand profile. They will match perfectly and will only need a slight shaving pass (plane or thicknesser) and you will have a beautiful end grain-to-end grain joint. And actually quite elegant too! Enjoy!

Definite Purpose - but not mine.
This bit certainly does what it says and does a nice job. It makes a finger joint but, as the picture shows, the outside edges on the one side get to be a feathered edge that is so thin it does not allow for planing or sanding of those serfaces without tiny pieces falling away. There is no question that the joint would be strong but it should be used only where the edge as you see it in the picture is showing, not the flat or face side (as if looking down from the top or up from the bottom in the picture). In other words it is for end-to-end joining of pieces the thickness of the bit only. It does not work as a glue joint for gluing up panels, i.e. gluing up boards side to side, which is what I purchased it for. In my ignorance I thought that is what it was for and my only reason for giving it a low grade is that I am disappointed that I had to spend so much money to find out that I should have purchased the Reversable Glue Joint bit. Freud should say that the Finger Joint Bit is not a glue joint bit for making panels where the feather edge will show. It does not work for that and it seems the explanation should point someone to the other bit if you are making panels. Nothing wrong with the bit, just the purpose should be explained. So I will try to say it again another way, the finger joint does not work for gluing small pieces together to make a wider board, like for raised panel doors. It is for making narrow, short boards into narrow longer boards. It is not for making narrow boards wider.

Nice Router Bit
This is a very nice router bit, and does exactly what it is stated to do. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is because it was lacking good instructions. I had to waist a good amount of wood setting it up. Once it was set up, it did the job great.

unbeatable joints
simply the strongest joints possible and absolutely essential if you want to end-join two boards. Makes virtually seamless connections when done properly.

Finger-joint dimensions are inaccurate
Typical of the review environment on Amazon, reviews (and questions and answers) submitted for many different Freud router bits appear here, lumped together. This review is specifically for Freud's finger-joint bit 99-037. The dimensions provided by Freud in the bit's packaging are inaccurate. The (two-tooth) pitch is not 21/64" as stated in the box; it's .3201", which means that to achieve a mating pattern between two boards to be joined, the bit must be offset by.0800" from board "A" to board "B." The depth of the cut, i.e., the dimension from peak to valley between the fingers, is not 5/16" as Freud contends; it's actually .320". Oddly, for a bit manufactured in Italy, none of the bit's dimensions (either Freud's purported values or the bit's actual dimensions) equate to a useful metric equivalent, so it's difficult to rationalize what Freud intended. Apart from these dimensional inaccuracies, the bit continues to perform well for me after many uses.
