Very dusty.
Even with the slow pour into a bowl as directed there remains pockets of dust. Definitely needs to be washed before hand. Color and quality: black is black lol you may find a spot or two that's another color but over all not very noticeable. Don't know about advertising prewashed with as much dust as I noticed. Overall: I haven't found a bag of sand that dosnt cloud up so it's a great purchase after the water changes and settling! Good buy!

Great product but remember to Risne!!
I have been using this for years and recently purchased to build out another planted aquarium. I really love the look and feel of the sand. I love how well my plants do in the sand. The only thing I don't like is what a pain it is to rinse it. It is very important that you pre-rinse it several/many times until the water is clear. I generally put it in a deep bowl or bucket and rinse - remembering to mix it up quite a bit. If you do not, you will end up with a silt filled tank. I am not sure if the silt would hurt your fish but I would not want to risk it. My gut says that it would be stressful for a fish to breathe in silt filled water but I do not know. Nonetheless, rinse well and avoid the issue. Also, when adding it to your aquarium, put it in a container and lower it down to the bottom before pouring it out.

Very natural looking
I’m not gonna lie, you’re gonna have to rinse it a LOT, but the end result is a beautiful sand that looks more natural than those colored gravels. More of a gunmetal grey than black imo but is still very beautiful.

I Should Have Gotten It In Person.
Tldr: RINSE as mentioned many times, mine had hastily taped holes also as mentioned many times, cheaper in person, and much finer than expected (possibly finer than supposed to be). Is cheaper by almost $10 if your local aquarium supply store has them in stock, and like many others have noted in the reviews, both of my purchased bags were cut open and taped back shut. I didn't weigh the bag to see how much may have been lost and don't know if it actually was used and returned as some have suspected. Once again, like many others have noted in the reviews, RINSE before use. There is a large percentage of dust in the bag (perhaps due to the same, likely prolonged rough handling that resulted in the big hole in the bag), and while the incredibly foggy look to your aquarium will clear after a day and a half or so, becoming genuinely very clear about 2 days after, ANY handling or upsetting of the substrate starts it all over again (a big issue if you have any fish/rays that love digging). I will be mixing up the substrate and replacing water polishing pads somewhat regularly for awhile in my tank, but at least it's getting cycled (I hope my sizeable snail population doesn't mind while they do their job of getting them bacteria going for the new fish and assassin snail inhabitants). I feel Amazon would have likely replaced what I received had I contacted them, but I was in a hurry (hence why I had bags of sand shipped instead of waiting to get in person; weird how that actually makes sense in this day and age), so I can't fuss too much about a problem that may have been swiftly and effectively resolved (or just replaced with more of the same, idk). If you are in a big hurry like me, try not to be and wait for your local aquarium supply to get some back in stock, and if you're too stubborn to not be in a hurry (also like me), take you dear, sweet time rinsing, possibly using a 5 gallon bucket with the hose stuck under the sand to really get the dust moving and out. The sand is also much finer than expected (maybe due to lots of rough handling and breaking down, maybe the pics on Seachem's website are just super-zoomed in? I've never tried this stuff before), hopefully it will not impede root growth. I will update later as to how things go for the new plants and fish that will live with it when I feel things are stable. I wish I had bought in person or gone to Amazon to try to send back for a refund, but I didn't. I'm sure all will work out, it will just be a bit more work than expected, and I will always wonder what my experience would have been getting it cheaper in person.

Great substrate but needs thorough cleaning!
I got this sand for substrate and aesthetics in my turtle tank! Ended up needing about five bags to complete the project and love the end result. I will say though, that this sand needs to be thoroughly washed! It made my tank water black with just one bag in nearly 100 gallons of water after washing the sand twice. It is a great product and I do recommend it, I just also recommend taking the time and care to thoroughly clean the sand!

Looks dark charcol grey but IS black when wet
This sand is as described. It is fine-grained so be aware of that. If you are looking for coarse grain, you'll be happier with Flourite Black fractionated clay gravel.

Rinse it well!
This is my second experience using Flourite, but my first time using their "sand" substrate. Realistically I'm almost certain that it's their regular Flourite Black but crushed more finely. It's pretty uniform in size and not quite the fineness of something like beach sand, but is considerably smaller than the standard Flourite. While it's labeled as black it's definitely a lot more gunmetal gray under direct (LED) light. It looks great against bright green plants and brightly colored fish. The bag says it's pre-rinsed, but you will absolutely, positively want to rinse this stuff in a bucket until your water runs clear. I made that mistake years ago the first time I used the regular Flourite and it turned my water into a brown mess. The particulate runoff with the black sand is very white/silvery. I rinsed it what I thought was reasonably well and still ended up with mildly cloudy water for about a week, even with polishing pads and Purigen. Eventually it filtered/settled out and it's a nice uniform dark-gray colored substrate and my water has cleared up. As for performance, my plants really seem to like it. It was very easy to get roots for Amazon swords, crypts, val, and dwarf sag to establish. Within days new root growth was working its way through the substrate and within 10 days I was seeing new runners on some plants. I can't say that's because of the substrate specifically, but I like that the sand has enough 'tooth' for roots to grab and create a network but still leaves enough space for water to penetrate and carry nutrients. Seachem makes some really good stuff and I'm going to be using more of their substrate in my next project.

it's sand but it's absolutely filthy
This sand is so filthy as to be pretty much unusable. Possibly ok if you are prepared to wash it with 50 gallons of water before use. I just couldn't get the muck out of it. Nearly lost a whole tank of fish.

Needs alot of rinsing but good if you put work in
Plants seem to like it - looks really nice for a natural look. Not a stark black - but thats why I like it - more of a charcoal grey. Spent a hour rinsing one bag - but payed off, settles really quickly.

Amazing
Excellent product, at a very reasonable price. I was using Anazonia for years which is twice as expensive. Both give amazing results with correct lighting and C02

Great sand
I love this sand. The black sand is just great, it can grow different types of plants and its safe for bottom dwellers
