The loudest filter I’ve ever owned
In theory, this filter should have been exactly what I needed. Something compact and safe for shrimp or breeding tanks and a step up from a traditional foam filter. Little did I know it would be a major let down, and as luck would have it, I bought two. Doh! Let’s start with the construction, it’s basically a “nicer” foam filter. It’s a 2 stage filter, but both pieces are the same type of filter media. It’s a power head with a plastic cup attached that holds foam and has a spreader bar outflow. Fine. I was using it for a small Neocardinia shrimp tanks that is heavily planted, so I only need mechanical. First flaw: the compartment that holds the foam has a suction cup, but it has a poor system to attach the upper and lower systems and the filter compartment constantly falls off, leaving your shrimp or fry in danger of literally being chewed up and spit out by the unguarded power head. When it’s not falling off, it makes the filter hang at a weird angle where the sprayer bar is not level to the water. When you level it with the water, the filter media compartment comes off. Second flaw: I’m not sure if there’s an angry army of squirrels inside this thing or what, but I kid you not, this is the loudest filter I’ve ever owned. On the lowest flow setting (which is essentially what I’d argue most people need from this) it sounds like a waterfall filter that’s out of water - and it’s under water. While I like the concept and I usually love Fluval products, save your money on this kne and buy a foam filter.

very powerful nano filter
Plenty of room to add your own charcoal, ceramic bio media, and filter foam. Makes for a customizable and powerful filter. You can also purchase disposable cartridges from Fluval. I can't say how those compare as I have not seen them in store.

not great for shrimp tanks
the suction is very powerful and a few of my shrimp got stuck and passed away and a few babies got trapped inside i managed to rescue them other than that id recommend this for other types of fish tanks just not for shrimp tanks

Very mixed feelings about the submersible pump, overall its a decent design and does the job, however it's supposed to be for a 15 gallon. I have it in a 10 gallon, and it still gets as lil cloudy, figured the adjustable flow rate would make it suitable, as one could just turn the flow down however it still seems to stir alot about in my tank even on the lowest setting, another issue like people in other reviews have mentioned is that the aquarium pump is very loud, rather you run it just with the biological filter or your stuffing in your own media floss, charcoal etc.. regardless I can't seem to get the thing to quiet down, as for cleanliness honestly I had to stuff more filter floss, cotton and charcoal into this then any other filter i've owned and I'm not sure why as I've had other filters that were designed for 50 gallons that are hang on the back type filters that seem to do a way better job at cleaning the water, and even though they technically handle more gallons per minute the harshness of water flow seems to be less than this Fluval submersible pump even with the long diffuser attached, it's still noisy and doesn't clean as good for how many gallons per minute its supposed to cycle, it acts more like a current generatar with some slight filtration..

Noisy on low pressure
The media could not be loaded. Overall I like this filter. I have it in a 5 gallon tank and bought it specifically because it has adjustable flow settings, and I needed something that wouldn’t overpower my crown tail betta. As far as flow control and cleaning power this is a 5 star filter for small tanks. The one major drawback to this filter is that it is noisy on the lowest pressure setting. It’s really pretty loud, but anything other than the lowest setting is too much for my little guy. I am used to it now and will keep it because I think it functions well besides that point, but if noise will bother you then I would not recommend this filter. I’ve included a photo to show how clean the water is, and also a video that shows how the noise is affected by changing from low to high pressure flow.

Good filter with a few flaws
I purchased this filter for a 5 Gal tank with the intent of customizing it. I removed the large black bio-sponge and replaced it with seachem matrix. I placed the small bio sponge on top of the matrix ("downstream" as it were) to catch any bacteria that may slough off. This keeps the impeller clean longer. I also keep red cherry shrimp. In order to make this filter shrimp-safe, I cut an aquaclear sponge very thin and stuffed behind the intake. This has the added bonus of removing large particulates. The filter has kept my water parameters well, and the flow is adjustable. That said, this filter produces a good amount of flow for my fluval chi tank, but not too much to impede my fish. In fact, my guppies love to play in the current right in front of the outflow. Now, this filter is not a 5-star product. It is great for what it is and what it can do. But it has a few minor flaws. The first flaw is in the construction itself. The media chamber attaches to the pump by slipping over it. But the connection is not totally sound; it can be finicky at times. If not totally submerged, air leaks into the filter through the gap and can cause noise. The second flaw (and one that almost made me return the filter) involves air bubbles. This filter needs to be completely submerged, or else it makes tons of grinding noise. I discovered the source to be air bubbles inside the filter. I carefully got all the bubbles out, and the filter worked perfectly! This can be a complication if you're doing large water changes that will emerse the filter. Every time that happens, you would have to spend a few extra minutes working out all the air bubbles, which can be a pain. I simply set the filter low enough that it will only be emmersed with a giant water change, and haven't had problems since!

Potential to be great - but a truly terrible filter.
This is going to be an overwhelmingly negative review - so let's start with the positives. The filter feels very well made. Hard, thick plastics that feel like they'll last. Well placed power cable, suction pads work very well. The spray bar can be adjusted fairly well, used either above or below the surface, or not used at all. The filter has plenty of room for media, I'd argue too much room given its really only suitable for smaller tanks as the actual filter itself becomes fairly bulky. The flow adjustment actually works very well (when its actually working to flow, that is). When it's working, it's actually great. Very good flow, very adjustable. It's just that "when" appears almost never. That's it. The actual functional elements of the filter, every single aspect about it is bad. I'll start with the minor things. The connection between the actual filter pump unit and media chamber is shockingly poor, it can slip off under its own weight... Leaving an exposed impeller... Extremely risky to shrimp, smaller fish and fish with long fins like Bettas. The media chamber is an almost sealed plastic unit with only a small number of slits for water inlet right at the bottom, only on one side of the unit. In practise this means the filter blocks up extremely quickly, even though only a small section of media is dirty. The spray bar attachment is far too difficult to move once attached. Just use a rubber washer instead of forcing plastics, for the love of God. The spray bar needed some minor poking to ensure flow through all the holes. That's the minor stuff though. Firstly if you search this filter in the internet, you will see countless comments about a god awful noise. This is a result of the impeller design, it is simply glued onto a spindle with a magnet at the top. Easy to remove and clean, but the mating between the magnet in the spindle and the motor magnet is terrible. High flow rates will cause the entire spindle to oscillate, making it bash against the walls greeting a horrible grinding noise. You can fix this with some minor adjustment and sensible reduction in flow (beyond the minimum the valve on the filter allows). Then you've got the issue of noise if the filter isn't totally clear of air. Which is more or less impossible to achieve thanks to only a single, pin prick airhole being located right on top of the pump unit. You need to turn that thing 360 degrees in every axis until even any air is released. Given the size of the filter chamber, this isn't a very easy task in most smaller fish tanks, as it's difficult to keep the unit submerged while attaching it to the chamber. It's almost impossible to get this thing running noise free without wading your hands through the water for minutes every single time you do a water change or somehow bring the filter above water surface level. Which stresses my fish out, and isn't exactly great given the oils on human skin. A minor issue, sure, but not one you should have at all. Then without fail, every single time, the filter will just lose all suction over a 48 hour period. At first I thought this was a case of my filter media just being clogged up in a new tank, so I ran the filter with no media at all, in a bucket with only fresh tap water. Within 48 hours the flow had reduced to a trickle again. We're talking a reduction in flow from being able to easily breach the surface and spray above the tank even with the bar an 5cm below the surface, to the pump struggling to even build enough pressure to get water out of each hole on the bar. Which in short, makes it totally ineffective as a filter. If I am having to put my hands into the tank every other day, and I can't trust my filter to flow properly for weeks if not months - it's not really going well is it. I'm genuinely amazed such a well known brand has their name on this product, it's simply that bad. I've never had such a negative experience with any aquarium product, from anywhere, as I've had with this.

the two parts easily detach. Fortunately I was able to ram enough ...
Update July 2020: had to buy another of these as previous one failed after several years. Amazon seem to be supplying them with European plugs, not UK plugs. Have had two sent now, both had to be returned. Bought this as I wanted a filter for a small tank (20L) with a spray bar as the flow on my previous filter was too strong and couldn't be adjusted. As previous reviews have said, the top half is joined to the bottom part (containing the filter sponges) by a very flimsy connection, so if you are adjusting the filter position in the tank, the two parts easily detach. Fortunately I was able to ram enough tank gravel underneath to support the bottom section without blocking the inlet holes. My tank isn't much taller than the filter assembly, so this worked well. Secondly, the spray bar. I put the filter together, plugged it in and stood back to see what it did. I was shocked at how bad the spray bar was - the holes hadn't been drilled properly and so the water was spraying out in all sorts of directions! I had to adjust all of the holes myself until I was satisfied with the flow. So it doesn't stay held together properly, and the spray bar didn't work properly and I had to make it spray myself! If you are reading this, you are probably wondering why I didn't return it and get something else! But at the current time, for or the size of my tank, this is the only suitable filter with a spray bar. Since I sorted it, I am happy with the filter. It's quiet from my perspective, and now does what it is supposed to do.

USA PLUG
Upon opening the box we were shocked to find out it had a USA plug even though purchased on UK amazon. So we then had to go and buy an adapter plug which was a hole pain as the reason we bought on Amazon is because I'm vulnerable and unable to leave the house due to COVID! It does work with the connecter but would rather have had a uk plug fitting.

Decent filter for nano aquarium
Pros: adjustable flow through the sprayer is great for fish that don't like too much current; good price. Cons: even for my 35L Fluvial flex, the pump doesn't really provide enough circulation; the sprayer bar design allows algae to build up at the tip of the sprayer so it needs weekly cleaning.

Potentially Noisy (solution below)
This filter is compact, easy to clean, and quiet if set up right. It's unfortunate, however, that it's so fussy to set up properly. Works perfectly for my 2.5g desktop shrimp tank. The problem is a design problem. The Impeller will bob around inside its housing making an annoying and very audible sound. It can run completely silent but it depends on two factors: (1) The flow rate must be set at maximum (2) The filter must be low enough for the water pressure to push against the impeller If you do the two above, the impeller will be forced against its retainer and not make any audible sound. If you want to run it at a lower flow rate or high out of the water, it will bob around and continue to be annoying. Otherwise the outflow bar is nice. You can set it underwater to push straight up or against the glass for no sound. Or you can set it above the water line for some nice fountain or running water sounds. I love that you can use your own durable filter media. You can throw in whatever you want or buy pre-cut foam. It's easy to access and replace. Appears to be shrimp and fry safe (I put an extra later of foam internally so they can't swim up into the filters). Everything here is hard plastic press fit. You need to be gentle and get some water on the fittings for it not to crack or break while twisting around. I don't regret my purchase but it would have been nice for someone to explain how to set it up properly.
