Probably the best filter you can get for a small tank.
So I had just gotten a new 2.5 gallon tank for my betta. I wanted to put a filter in there to keep the water clean and circulate the water. I first bought the Whisper filter for tanks up to 3 gallons and was very disappointed (very loud and it didn't actually filter the water at all), so I ordered this one on Amazon. So far it is working great. It is actually very quiet. I have the tank sitting right next to my bed, so having a quiet filter is a must. I can barely hear it, but the sound it makes is a constant, soft, bubbly sound, so it's great for sleeping to anyway. Since it is supposed to work for tanks up to 6 gallons, it is a bit powerful in my little tank, so I put a small strip of pantyhose around part of the intake to slow down the flow a little bit. I see there are a lot of people saying their fish got sucked into it. To be honest I doubt that is the case most of the time. What probably happened is the fish died on its own, and since the filter sucks up any floating debris, the dead fish will get sucked into it, making it appear as though the filter was responsible. If you're still worried about it though, you can do what I did and cover the intake partially with pantyhose (don't completely cover the intake or it won't work; I have about half of it covered). Overall, this filter was the best one I can find for a 2.5 gallon tank. It is smaller than any other filter I found, it keeps the water clean and aerated, it's quiet, and the replacement cartridges are pretty cheap. The only thing about it is I couldn't use the attachment clip for it because I wasn't able to put the lid on with it that far out of the water, so I basically just have it standing up in the tank. It still works though, although you probably want to make sure that the filter isn't completely submerged. I'd definitely recommend this for betta owners! Just an update: it's been a couple of months. I went ahead and took off the strip of pantyhose. I have a fake plant in front of the filter so as to break up the flow a little bit. The filter is still working and it's not too powerful for my betta. He actually likes to rest on that plant right in front of the filter, doesn't seem bothered by it one bit. Like I said before, I'm not worried about him "getting sucked in and killed". I think those fish either died first, then the filter sucked them in. Either that or maybe these people had the fish in too small aquariums. In my little 2.5 gallon though, it's working great -- still quiet, still cleaning, and not too powerful. Still recommend it! Second update: So my betta died after living with me for about two and a half years :( He was not sucked into the the filter though; he died on the opposite side of the tank and was there until I took him out. I ended up getting another betta after a couple weeks, and I'm using the same filter. While my previous betta didn't seem to mind it at all, this one did not seem as well able to handle the current (he has much longer fins than the other one did, so that's probably why), so I covered most of the intake with pantyhose again and he is now doing great.

Best filter yet!
The media could not be loaded. I have purchased three filters for my fish so far and this one is the best one yet! I just set it up about an hour ago but so far I love it! The first one I had didn’t filter the tank at all, the second one I had was way too powerful and kept pushing my fish to the bottom of the tank. But as soon as I put this filter in I was amazed of how much of the old food it started to suck up and filter! The flow of the water is not too strong and it seems like my fish doesn't mind it too much! The one thing I did notice is when the fish swam close to the suction part of the filter it kind of pulled him close to it which I didn’t like. I’m going to monitor him to make sure he’s safe and also get him a bigger tank tomorrow so he has more room to swim. The filter also made a really loud noise when I first turned it on but I just messed around with it a little bit and took it in and out of the water slow and the loud noise stopped. But so far I love this filter and if anything changes I will definitely update my review!

The best filter for a betta fish, hands down!
Rarely do I leave a review, but for this I absolutely NEED to spread the word. PROS - Very quiet, very gentle flow CONS - very gentle flow (might be bad for some tanks?), a bit tall (it fits my 5.5g but probably wouldn't fit a smaller tank) It's always a pain to look for filters for a betta. The flow is too high on most, ripping fins at best or killing a betta at worst. The end result is needing to stress the poor betta with frequent water changes and tank scrub-downs. My last filter came highly recommended (a type of sponge filter), and while my betta did well enough with it, it disturbed the water surface so much that my betta couldn't build a bubble nest and spent much of his time near the bottom of the tank. Alive, but depressed. I tried out a different filter, which was extremely noisy (I don't mind loud noises, so it wasn't a factor for me). However, it had no way to attach to the side of the tank, and thus it was constantly floating around with a cheap and flimsy lid that popped off. Determined to get a good filter for my betta, I ordered this one and left my betta filter-less until it arrived. First of all, smart design: it gives you the choice between clipping it on the side of the tank, or attaching it via suction cups. My tank lid doesn't work for clipping things on the side, so being able to use suction cups instead was a big plus. The motor is very quiet; so quiet that I couldn't hear it next to my 10g tank. But the flow of this filter? It's perfect for a betta. My betta is an elephant ear: big, showy fins that make it hard for him to swim against a current. The current from this filter is as gentle as one would expect it to be in a pond. The water is filtering at a pace where he can swim right up to the filter without it pulling him at all. He's even setup a bubble nest! This makes it, without a doubt, the best filter for a betta. I'm expecting him to have a long and happy life because of this!

The “Goldilocks” filter for my betta sorority
I have tried many different filters for my overstocked 3.5 gallon betta tank. Many were too small and would not keep the tank clean. Others were too big and provided way too much outflow current for a small tank. This one is perfect. The water is crystal clear and odor free and the filter is almost silent. The bettas are happy. Unfortunately the pictures do not show how clear the water is due to poor ambient lighting.
