Accurate
The manual says it comes with 4 extra pins; I didn’t receive these.

Pins are bad and display is not backlit.
The pinless function works fine however the pins continually lose contact. I have to constantly retighten the pins but they are not reliable. I can now only use it as a pinless meter. Also, because the display is not backlit, it is very difficult to read. I use this meter in Crawlspaces and attics quite frequently. Not happy with it’s performance.

Great Product, Silly Design Flaw
It's great in terms of bang for your buck. I'm on my second one and they're accurate and tough. Been dropped multiple times and still working. My only gripe is the location of the power button. Being on the front, it has a habit of turning itself on while in my tool belt. This is a problem with every moisture meter I own, and as a home inspector it is really annoying.

I use this every single day while performing home inspections. In fact, it is probably my favorite tool. The problems I have uncovered and the knowledge I have been able to provide with this has payed for it 100 times.Having both the pin and pinless mode is imperative. If it hasn't rained in a few days they without pinless you would never know if there is still leaking. Results are highly reproducible and accurate. One of the nicest things is the fact there is a chart on the back with levels of moisture for different materials/ modes. This is helpful as the pin/pinless modes read moisture differently therefore 30% on one is different from the other. The beeping is a nice touch in hard to reach areas. It would be nice if you could silence it though as can be a bit annoying while using for extended periods. Lastly, the power butting could be moved or redesigned. I like to carry this with me a lot and is easily turned on in a pocket. Not a huge deal but have gone through a few batts quickly when it gets wedged against something in my tool bag. P.S. pin cover is hard to open but that does prevent it from getting lost/ someone sticking themselves. I find it easiest to push on the front and rotate back, usually pops right off that way. Just make sure not to pin yourself.

Look at the videos online and setting it up is easy.
The device showed me where my moisture was lower and where their might be a problem. It was a good indicator and I found the leak source under my kitchen floor.

good product worth the money
I like the display screen is large and the silicone grips in orange help hold onto the device. I also like the testing device is very handy inside the pin cap and not in a separate little baggie that gets lost and no body knows what it is. The only advice I'd have is to make the pin cap cover attach with a dangling cord so that it doesn't get misplaced and is always attached.

Not sure!
The Extech M0290 is a great moisture meter. It genuinely serves its purpose within the industry. My father has had his for well over 15 years. The orange rubber boarder is fading away it’s that aged however, when I took this unit out of its case and placed the battery in back, I turned it on and selected non intrusive mode and it instantly picked up moisture when the unit wasn’t touching any materials.

Good value
Nothing to dislike, damage free inspection of plaster board etc with the benefit of pins for checking masonry and timber etc

A mixed bag
Advantages: Pin and pinless mode in one instrument. The pinless mode allows quick scanning of walls. The device seems to give the correct general behaviour i.e. damper materials give higher readings and (usefully) faster beeping when sound is on. So far, the readings seem reasonably reproducible - going over the same area again give more or less similar readings. It isn't expensive. Drawbacks: Absolute readings in pinless mode do not seem credible (it overestimates - bone dry plaster on block reads about 19%). The pinless comparison mode (whereby you can zero the device on a known dry material before testing damp specimens) does not work - the device does not zero when switched on in contact with the dry reference.

This works.
I have a Brennenstuhl model, that has only pins, pins are ok for wood an brick but not so good for detecting wood panels in a motorhome or caravan, this works as a scanner, so is easy to use. Dont listen to keyboard warriors who claim they have a £300 scanner and this is inferior, IT DOES WHAT IT SAYS ON THE TIN, detects Water Ingress, and Damp Panels.

Versatile, quick and easy to check for embedded damp without surface damage.
Very useful tool in checking for hidden excess dampness in buildings and materials without leaving any marks or surface puncture damage. Quick to use with options for either surface testing pins or non damaging deeper embedded moisture and also choice of wood or general building material. Works well with wood, blocks, concrete, plaster ect. Even locates damp areas behind 'foil backed' plasterboard. Have found it can gives a false positive sometimes with some natural building stones, but this can be checked against known dry sample. Readings should be treated as indicative of relative dampness, which it is good at, although as with all these meters a digital reading calibration function would have been useful. Easy to use, clear large display. Good value. Highly recommended.

As a pinless moisture meter it is next to useless.
Using the meter in "pin" mode gives reasonably believable results on a masonry wall. But in "pinless" mode, the readings are not even close (always much, much higher - even a bone dry internal wall measures at 19%, i.e. "medium" dampness). Furthermore, the "pinless comparison mode" simply doesn't work in the way described in the manual - and I'm not the first reviewer to note this. Two stars as the product appears to work as a "pin" moisture meter... but if that's all you need, there are much cheaper products than this one. Returning for refund.
