NO Nuts included for DIY bucket filter

They have there own thread pitch design that is not common US or Metric, So have to improvise on making a nut for them . Got plenty of hand tight force with just this plastic cap idea used and does not ruin the original threads. Also used 29/64th holes in the bucket and got a 1/4 turn tight on the seal as well before putting on the bottom plastic cap on (nut).

Better Than Black Berkey Elements

Prospective buyers, please beware that this filter element DOES NOT come with a threaded nut to secure this filter to your filter housing. I guess Katadyn assumes that if you are buying this replacement filter, that you already have one. However, since I was buying this filter element to put inside my Big Berkey Stainless Steel Housing gravity filter, I did not have one. After buying some Doulton Ceramic candles from a different website (gravityfilter dot com), I was able to get the gentleman to toss in a "katadyn threaded washer" with my order. Gravityfilter dot com sells all sorts of filter elements for gravity filters. I am not saying that they are the Cheapest, but this website was rather convenient in that they had all the things I was looking for. After EXTENSIVE research, I have been able to conclude that the Black Berkey Filter Elements that are included with the Big Berkey fitlers are NOT adequate nor are they superior to these katadyn filter elements. If you are curious as to what research I have done regarding this matter, feel free to click on my profile and see my review of the Big Berkey system. All in all I am happy with this Katadyn filter element and will use it in an emergency. However, I do prefer the Doulton Ceramic candles for reasons which you can read on my Berkey review.

Service life vs taste quality

I ordered three Ceradyn filters replacing the Gravidyn filters in my Katadyn. I tried the Ceradyn filters because of the extended service life, but taste the difference in filter types. If how your water tastes is a priority order the Gravidyn filters.

For a Rainwater Collection Project

I haven't actually tried it yet, I've bought this to use in a rainwater collection system for my RV; water runs off the roof, through the gutters, down some pipes and hoses, then through the Katadyn into the tank. I think it will work, with 13,000 gallons of filtering, this should last a good while. If you have similar ideas, I'll describe what this actually looks like and how it works, since it's hard to tell from the picture. The middle part is actually ceramic, and the water will seep through that ceramic, through that stuff in the middle, then out the nipple on the end. So actually, the picture is upside down, as far as it works, you would need the nipple on the bottom for a gravity feed. I researched a lot of different filters, and I thought this one would work best for this application. Wish me luck on my mad scientist project!

Where is the nut that holds down the filter?

Yes I like it But, it does not come with the nut that hols down the filter in place. At the same time it is from where the water drips out to the bottom continer. So,how in the world are You going to fine that kind of nut?

We have used these filters for about 14 years in Ghana West Africa. They make the water taste great and remove the fear of water borne disease or parasites. We buy a case of bottled water when we arrive and then just refill them from from the filter. We used to buy the "purified" water in the cellophane bags but got sick from some mold one time and changed to this filter. Been very happy since.

These filters and the system that goes with it provided amazing water cleanliness while we served as missionaries in Malawi, Africa for the past four years. We never drank water without it having gone through the Katadyn system. Now that we have returned stateside we brought our system back with us and are going to use this as backup (because you just never know when we will not be able to rely on clean water). We never worried about the quality of our water with this system!

great replacement for an old Ceradyn

A replacement for a Ceradyn filter element that was in use for 12 years in a RV. The new one is like a carbon copy of the old, so most likely to perform equally well, but impossible to totally judge before years of use.

Efficient water cleaner

the tap water where I live is chalky and any tea and coffee made with it is bad. I got sick of carrying bottles of water from the shops so started to use rain water filtered and then boiled. I will continue to buy these every year to ensure my water is healthy to drink.
