Function Over Beauty...Edit on 2/22
This is a pretty large addition to the intake tube on my SunSun 704b...not easy to hide. It's charcoal grey color doesn't match with my other filter plumbing and sticks right out against my black background and sides.... But boy does it do the job! I have been setting up a new African Cichlid tank and stirring up a lot of fine white sand in the process. Not wanting all that sand in my canister I took a chance on the Eheim pre-filter fitting my SunSun plumbing...it did perfectly after shortening the down tube. The filter is made in two sections that come apart by pressing the light grey button on the front of the filter case. It doesn't just pop right off, so a little care is necessary to gently wiggle it off. Inside is a coarse white sponge that seems to be very effective at catching the bigger stuff as well as the fine white sand. Interestedly, the top section seems to collect more gunk, while the bottom section seems to grab the sand particles. I can see where this filter would be very handy for the aquarist that had a very large livestock load. They could combine the sections of two pre-filters to have four sections. On the other hand, a person with a small tank could elect to only use the top section. Very good design. My only whimper...make it in solid black. (Edit: Actually, it is black but somehow turns light grey once in the water. IDK why.) Edit 2/22: I would give this product 10 stars if I could. My 60 gallon Brichardi tank now has a school of 30 or 35 (who can count?) fish of various ages and sizes. As the population grew, I added a Polar Aurora filter for two big canister filters on this tank and of course added the Eheim pre filter. The SunSun 704b crapped out on me last month so I replaced it with an Oase 350. It’s down tube is the smaller size but I was able to fashion a reducer with a small section of tube. I’m back now to buy a third Eheim pre filter for my 29 gallon planted tank which has a problem with plant debris clogging the intake. I have learned that your biological filter will thrive better if left alone and not disturbed for periods of six months or more. I scraped all the “bio rock” and went totally with Poret 30 ppi foam for biological filter media. This means that mechanical filtration has to occur prior to bio. With the Eheim coarse pre filter and then fine sponge in the Oase pre filter before the water goes to the bio stage. Works great.

Eheim is just awesome
The media could not be loaded. This pre-filter is awesome!! While rather large it does seem to conceal nicely into the corner of my 55 gallon tank. I run the 250 model of Eheims classic filter, and with the help of a 2 inch piece of tubing it fits snuggly onto the original intake tube (which I have also been considering replacing with the gray/clear intake that they have here on Amazon) Since I've never had one of these before, I wanted to show how easy it is to take apart (which is the video I included) The only downside is the size- which I wasnt at all expecting. Each section is about 2.5 inches tall, and I'm glad that one is removable otherwise it wouldn't have fit. Last night my tank was a little cloudy (I was moving around some plants and adjusting the air stone) but I put this on, went to sleep and woke up to a very clear and clean tank. Cleaning wise, I am able to turn off the filter, disconnect the cartridge section underwater, easily wash it off, pop it back on, and turn the filter back on without having any funny business. Despite being pretty coarse, the media picked up a lot of the fine particles that were making my water look a little cloudy. The main reason I bought this, however, wasn't because of my water quality, but rather my 6 baby Ember Tetras, the 7th of which was sucked up through the original end piece about 4 days ago. Sad to say I have had this on my aquarium list for a while and the accident could have been prevented. Yet another great German product at a great price, thank you Eheim!

Great add on to canister filter to replace OEM green inlet
This is great to have, especially if you are going to try and breed fish. It will help keep them alive by not sucking them in! It also helps to get the larger particles before it reaches your canister filter. These are easy to remove and rinse in tank water to keep clean. I rinse these out every time I do a water change. I recommend getting this and replacing your old suction inlet.

Looks like a valuable exception to standard filtration.
I hooked it up so that I could drink straight from the hose.

Customizable and Easy to Clean
I originally got this prefilter for my 55g but had to downsize tanks. I like most that I was able to keep using this in my 30g because the levels are totally custom - I have just one of the levels in so it doesn't dominate the tank size. Additionally there is no reason why three or four levels couldn't be stacked, and loss to flow would be minimal as only the bottom level has a different flow intake.

Perfect for turtle tank
Love these. Was trying to figure out a way to add a prefilter sponge on my Eheim Classics that would be turtle proof. The typical sponge filters would not work. Then came across these and presto! These work. I have two, one on Classic 2217 and one for the classic 2215. Maintaining the tank now has been a breeze. Just grab a plastic bag, wrap filter in bag and pull off tubing along with tank water and remove out of tank to clean. This way any gunk that may come loose will be in the bag and not the tank. Learned that the hard way. I clean these weekly, alternating each one. My turtle tank has remained so clean by using these and makes it easier to maintain. Now I only have to clean the canisters every six months or so. I have these on a 50 gallon red eared slider turtle tank that has two 2.5-3” turtles. Using classic 2217 and classic 2215 filters. Definitely recommend the prefilter. Size of each is approximately a soda can.

A must have for FX Canister users.
I attached the Eheim Prefilter to my FX6 intake with an FX Hose adapter. It has removed 90%+ of the gunk that normally would get into the cannister using the normal FX intake attachment. This makes filter maintenance way easier and way less gross. My bio media is clean !

This should be called the goldfish keeper's best friend!
I have a 75 gallon planted aquarium with 3 comet goldfish (2 full sized and 1 stunted rescue), with an aquaclear 110 hob and a penn plax cascade 1200 canister filters, and sand substrate. PROS: -Catches all the fish poop and most plant debris -Widens the filter intake flow area, totally eliminating snail death or plant damage from high concentrated flow intakes, all without significantly reducing the overall filter's flow -Allows for much more time between filter maintenance as the intake sponges catch much of the particles and can easily be squeezed out once a week. -The baskets hide much of the debris caught in the sponges. -Sponges are coarse enough that they do not clog even if neglected for few weeks, but fine enough to keep the water crystal clear. -Prevents the sand substrate from getting sucked up in the filters and damaging the impeller -The baskets are stackeable, I use a 5 and an 8 basket stacks. CONS: -The baskets are grey, contrary to the picture where they appear black. This makes them unsightly against most backgrounds. I hide mine with taller plants. -There is no adapter included to fit other brands. I used plumbing tape to get it to fit my aquaclear and electrical tape to fit my cascade canister intake tube. -The bottom cover is difficult and tedious to remove for stacking, I managed to remove mine with a small flat-head screwdriver and a bit of force. -Maintenance can be very messy until you get the hang of it as a lot of debris floats away when you turn off the filters. The best trick is from aquarium coop: slip a ziplock or fish bag over the prefilter BEFORE you turn the filter off and while it is still attached to the intake tube. Then you can turn of the filter, and pop off the prefilter while pinching the opening of the bag and transfer to your bucket for maintenance.

Awesome!
I love this thing. Admittedly, it's a bit on the large side and will detract from the ascetics of the tank so be sure to plan to hide it behind some plants or hard-scape. With that said, it does work really, really well. There's no perceptible reduction in flow rate and keeps a great deal of the "sludge" build up out of your filter. It's very easy to remove and clean. I'd highly recommend this for those wanting to extend the maintenance intervals on your canister filter and certainly for those that keep shrimp in the tank.

Opened package???
Package came looks like the box was banged around a bit and opened and closed alot... So umm not very sanitary. Just wanted to hop on here and say that hence the 3 stars would put 2 but the product looked undamaged. Will edit once I've used. As I've been wanting to breed my pineapple swordtails and also cichlids so we thought this was the best option just a little disappointed about the packaging.

Great product (but doesn't fit all)
Works absolutely great on my Eheim Pro 4+ 250 and I highly recommend. However it does not fit my Eheim Pro 4+ 600; even though it comes as compatible when you click on the Ehiem 600 on amazon?? had to put some caulking inside so it would not fall off. Modified it to fit 600 as I just like it so much ;) Comes apart for cleaning easily; just remember to push button and wiggle side to side, don't just pull straight up.
