Great night vision..a little small on field of view
We have a bear that likes to come into the yard and forage. We’ve lost a couple of chickens to it and didn’t want to lose the dog, so we needed something to see around the yard at night when we let her out. I’ve come too close to the bear and didn’t want to chance a bad encounter, so I got this. First, it’s an excellent picture. There are two focuses on either end and it dials it in perfect. Even with low light, like the motion sensor outdoor light coming on behind me or bright moonlight, you still have a clear picture. It doesn’t blind when light flashes across it, like headlights might on other units. The only complaint I have is the field of vision is small. I need to see bears clear and quickly and you need to be slow and steady with this. Granted, I could get a wider view with a much more expensive unit, but this is the best for the money. I’ve used other night vision years ago in the military and it was a narrow field, too. This is very similar to what we had in the 90’s in Iraq in my opinion. The one picture is a deer photobombing my neighbors truck about 70 yards away. The deer is 15-20 yards away, so you can see close and far together pretty well. The other is an individual closing the shed door about 20 yards away from me. I took both with my camera phone held up to it, but that’s pretty true to size. It would be perfect if I was just out casually looking at night stuff. If I turn it 45°, it helps widen the field. Probably with a little more practice, I’ll be more steady and comfortable with it. It has 5 settings that you change with the power button on top. I didn’t notice much difference between them when testing it, but I didn’t vary the conditions I was trying it in. I’d probably get it again. For the money, it’s a great value.

My first impressions...
Ok. So i intended to use this for hunting. I hunt wild boars in the evenings. Therefore, NV is a very important for me. My first impressions can be summoned in pros and cons. PROS: small, light weight CONS: eats batteries, makes loud clicks when you turn it on (and this is not just one click, because in order to see in pitch dark, you have to click like 5 times to get to the highest IR illumination. Picture is little weird to be.While other NV I owned had little greenish, but real time picture, this one has almost black and white picture, that seems like digital, because there is a slight delay. I compared this item to my yukon NV and I have to say that yukon has won. Even though it is bulkier, yukon has a better picture, and its definitely better on the batteries. Plus, in the dusk conditions, yukon can work without IR, while XGEN, due to a small lens cannot work without IR at all. In summary, if you are looking something to play with, I guess its fine. However, if you are in need of a decent NV for hunting and similar, I would suggest spending extra $50-$70 and getting something better.

Works Well For My Needs - Recommended!
This Night Owl Optics "XGEN 2X Digital Night Vision Monocular" is a good value for a very functional, low-end night vision monocular. The monocular is very small and lightweight, making it perfect for camping or adding to a "Bug Out Bag". The optical quality is better than expected and the IR emitter does a nice job lighting up a dark room. The unit has two lenses, each with a focus that must be set in conjunction to optimize the picture clarity. The unit also has a "mode" setting that adjusts the IR emitter power and frame-rate to get the best performance for the operating environment. The included "pleather" carrying case is functional, but nothing special. I very much like that it takes standard three standard AA batteries (not included), which are always easy to get. This is not a high-end unit, but it is not priced like one either. Recommended! CFH

Great to see the yard at night.
I bought this fro my husband as a birthday gift. We have an acre of land and wanted to see what the dogs were barking at. it takes a while to learn how to focus it properly, and to realize you have a lens cap to remove ;) but once its set up you can see quite well. you have to have quite open spaces as what ever is closest blocks your vision, even if its just a small tree. I find that it makes me feel a bit sick if i look through it for too long. I think for the price, it is a great tool, not too sue you'd want to take it on a serious hunting trip but its small enough it wouldn't be a burden.

This are a great little NV set
This are a great little NV set, especially if your not looking to splurge. they are a digital view folks, so a bit different than the Reg NVG. I got these because I'm so tired of squinting into the dark ass woods behind my house, which is a high traffic area for the homeless, and the local hoodlums. I can hear them out there often, but I've been told by the police, I must undeniably see them on my property, before calling again. I may need glasses laxative at my age, but my ears are sharp as they've ever been.

both of which would have been better for the grandkids
I had ordered a different one at first because the other one had an attached lens cap and a strap..both of which would have been better for the grandkids. BUT the other one I bought did not work. I purchased 9 of this model and they were a major hit! They couldn't wait until it got dark so they went down the basement to use them. After they all went home, I got calls from the parents telling me they were outside using them. The attached lens cap and strap would have been all I could have asked for, but at least this model worked where the other did not.

It works very well - a best buy!
Scope is small and light; a bit awkward to focus, but it focuses well. The image is well defined in very low light. Sighting through an open window can be problematic since the built-in light can reflect off the window casing and overpower the image tube. Inside a home it works very well and I could read my 6 inch wall clock very easily in total darkness (self illumination by the scope, that can not be turned off). A hand strap would be very useful as the hand-held image can shake in your hand. I will also equip it for use on a tripod. For less than $100, I don't think it can be beat. P.S. it can see stars in the dark sky; a bit blurry, but it is not really designed for astronomy.

Better than carrots.
I have to be honest, this is one of those things I didn't at ALL need, but it is far too cool to not have. Simply, it works. I'm impressed! There is a little digital screen that seemingly has some control options (with which I haven't yet fully oriented myself), and has a brilliant display. There is a wide allowance for the focus, also. This monocular functions flawlessly in low-light settings, through to pitch-black darkness (the darker, the better, because of the infrared). Great gear to have, because you never know when you might need to see in the dark without the attention (or irritation) of a bright flashlight.

My daughter and myself use it just to play around. It's OK for the price.

Not true night vision
This is not a night vision scope, in the traditional sense. This is a black and white viewfinder with ir illumination like a cctv camera. Viewing are is size of a postage stamp. Or so. Not high resolution, cannot imagine would be useful for anything but a toy for kids.
