Excellent LED lights that install quickly and require an ELV dimmer for best performance.

I ordered these lights based on their ease of installation and great price point for 6 individual units. I knew going into this project that LED lights will hum when dimmed IF a powered dimmer (also called an ELV for electronic low voltage) is not utilized. Granted there are some reports of no humming from various people out there that used non-ELV dimmer switches, but the majority report this problem. Non-ELV dimmers are considerably cheaper than ELV ones, so if you want to experiment first and see if a non-powered dimmer works, I'd recommend trying. Otherwise, I found that the Lutron ELV Skylark Contour is the cheapest ELV dimmer out there that definitely works with these LED can lights. It costs about $50 on average for the switch. Wiring is straightforward, as is cutting the holes. The units are lightweight, and they are totally supported by the drywall. A foam ring is included to make an airtight seal between the body of the fixture and the drywall, but with the foam rings installed, it made the beauty rings stand off about 1/16th of an inch. I removed all the foam rings before installation and I have no air circulation issues at all. My advice: don't use the foam rings. With the ELV dimmers, I'm able to turn them down extremely low for movie watching or just relaxing in the living room and not being in the dark. I usually leave a pair on all night, as they provide a great night-light effect when at their lowest setting. Running on high all day and they never heat up, so putting insulation over them in the attic is ok and actually advised in the manual.

Excellent LED Spot Lights

We recently made a plan to replace a couple of old fluorescent fixtures in our kitchen with LED spots. After purchasing compact cans and LED fixtures, I cut holes in the ceiling only to find a PVC water drain that inhibited the installation of one of the spot cans. I searched the internet and found these LED Easy Up fixtures that don't require the installation of a spot can, but simply clip to the finished ceiling with a J box built onto the top to enclose the electrical wiring connections. Installation was a snap, and they work great for about half the price of traditional cans and LED fixtures. At 5000K these are very bright, but that is what we were aiming for to replace two dual tube 48" fluorescent fixtures. These Easy Up fixtures are dimmable, so I will add a dimmer switch to be able to tone them down a bit if needed. The white trim rings that come with them are magnetically attached, and we were able to find bronze replacements at Home Depot that match our other kitchen lighting. These lights are awesome!

Delivers on high CRI, very easy to install

TL:DR a great high CRI LED retrofit option for your recessed lighting. I replaced about a dozen low voltage AC halogen recessed can lights from Elite Lighting in my house in preparation for a sale. These units have a scissors clamp that is very easy to install as a replacement for the previous lights. The plastic junction box is a bit tight with solid conductor cables, but it's a breeze compared to ripping out the nasty clips of the previous recessed lighting (it took me about 5 tries before I got proficient at it). I measured the light with a spectrophotometer (because I am a total lighting nerd) and was surprised to find they actually met or exceeded the promised 93 CRI, a very good result for LED lights.

Used this in the 2nd floor master shower ceiling. The attic (double) insulation presses down on the J-Box housing. This initially caused a about a 1/4" inch gap between the light and the ceiling. Went back into the attic and did the following to remedy the problem: * Slid a 1/4" thick paneling strip under each of the clips. * Arranged the electrical wire so it was not being pressed downward by the insulation. * Forced a pocket, in the insulation, to take some of the pressure off the J-Box housing. It would be nice if they used a screw down clap system similar to a retrofit outlet box.

I chose to use these on a Toungue and Groove install and the one thing that went as expected was the light install. With limited room above ceiling I found these as an alternative to a typical can/trim/bulb, and at the price point decided to try them. I have to say they came complete and installed quick and easy. Pros - Air tight- damp approved Lightweight Seems to throw more light then a standard 65w Color rendering very good Cons - Unlike others that have reviewed, my directions called for a 6 1/4" hole saw - I opted to ignore and use a 6" and it was perfect fit. All and all this is a great product (after 1 day) and we will testing with dimmers and with anticipated success will incorporate them into other parts of the remodel.

The product isn't the problem.

Ordered 3 of these lights then decided to add a 4th. ordered the fourth one about a week later. It was delivered and since I already had the hole cut in the ceiling, I installed it. They look and work great. Then noticed one dimmer. I received a 30 watt in stead 40 watt. Problem: I would spend almost as much in gas returning it to UPS as the item cost. Not much to learn from this.....just venting a little. They do work as advertised and relatively simple to install.

I disagree that these are easy to install. The spring on the clamps that hold the fixtures to the sheetrock are very strong. Fortunately, we were able to work partially from above as we have a drop ceiling in our kitchen. We secured one clamp open with strong wire, inserted the fixture, and then released the wire. We are pleased with the results. The lighting has taken a while to get used to as it is much brighter than the fluorescents that they replaced.
