THIS IS IT FOLKS...YES, YOU BEGINNERS TOO, SKIP ALL THE GIMMICKS AND GO STRAIGHT FOR THIS SET
YES, this is the set you want. Start with this set. You've got a limited budget and don't want to waste your time and money on crappy sets with 40 lousy, very similar colors that will not flow across your paper. You're a beginner and don't want to fuss to make beautiful work. Just buy these FIRST. You don't need all the other stuff being fed to you on YouTube etc. Those people get paid to endorse junky crap. You can mix so many colors with this set. Buy this first. Learn to mix your own colors. You'll be glad you did. Learn to draw. Learn to letter. I also recommend you jump right in with the best brushes. Princeton Aqua Elite are delightful to use. Additionally, Baohong paper is priced right and amazing quality. You can add to your watercolor set as needed, just start here. You won't regret it. I've mixed up the most basic color mixing chart. As you can see you can get some very nice greens and purples.

Perfect for a limited palette
This Daniel Smith set is perfect for a limited palette as I learn to mix my own colors. It contains a warm and a cool red, warm and cool yellow and warm and cool blue. I added a couple other colors like a green for convenience but didn’t really need to. I squeezed these into a 3D printed sectioned insert I found on Etsy that fits into an Altoids tin, added a travel brush and I have a travel watercolor set. My only complaint is the size of the tubes, 5 ml. Those are colors I will want again. It was enough to share with someone else doing the same kit, though.

Great for everyone
It's a great price. A great introduction into artist watercolor. It's a great way to learn mixing and color theory. Beautiful granulating color. Highly recommend

The basic split palette all in one box
A split palette consists of primary colors: red yellow and blue, but split between warm and cool versions. This palette has five ml tubes (small but good for trying out) and the colors are Pyrrol Scarlet (warm red, replaces Cadmium Red.) Quinacridone Rose (cool red, replaces Alizarin Crimson) Hansa Yellow Light (cool greenish yellow, replaces Cadmium Lemon) New Gamboge (warm yelllow, replaces Gamboge no longer made) French Ultramarine (warm blue, reddish) Phthalo Blue Green Shade (GS cool, greenish Replaces the less stable Prussian Blue) Some notes: The New Gamboge oozed out of the tube, this is due to chemical properties of the pigments and binders. The other colors did not ooze out. The Phthalo blue is a beautiful almost turquoise blue and it's VERY strong. It's pretty close to primary cyan. It will stain. It won't lift (come off paper with water in the brush) very easily. But it's a gorgeous color. French Ultramarine is the only color that is one of the oldest originals in palettes and it granulates a bit. You can get any color mixing these six; you'd only possibly add two more: Burnt Sienna (or Quinacridone Sienna) and either Yellow Ochre or Quinacridone Gold (warm, earthy gold.) or raw sienna, a more transparent version of yellow ochre. Of the choices, I prefer the quinacridones and raw sienna but it's your choice. These eight make a perfect landscape palette. The Pyrrol Red replaces Cadmium Red and is less opaque. I prefer it over the old Cadmium Red likewise prefer Hansa Yellow to Cadmium Yellow Lemon or any of the cadmium pigments. Not sorry to see them go.

Some of my favorite colors now ????
I absolutely love these! I really enjoy painting with granulating colors to create some great texture in my work, and these just hit the mark. Rhodonite makes an interesting mixer and adds texture to every color you mix it with. On its own, it's like a slightly muted quinacridone rose. My one complaint is that if you work it too much on the paper, the paper appears to pill. Almost like the paper was made rough while the paint was going down. I mix a lot on the page, so for this color I just switch to mixing on a palette. Piemontite has a beautiful red wash with gray granulation. It's one of my favorite red mixers to add that black texture in the tooth of the paper. In terms of dispersion, it flies across the paper. Amethyst has a little of that black granulation, but this color has the most beautiful glittery sheen in the light. Mayan Blue is the most beautiful gray toned blue. It has quite a bit of granulation on the page, but there isn't much separation of color. Jadeite is my go-to green. The tint is a mossy tone and the granulation is a darker brown color. The mass tone is very dark and concentrated. Hematite is just interesting to look at. It lifts right off the paper when needed, and it granulates very heavily. It makes a great mixture if you want to force that granulating property with a non granulating color. If you're looking for some interesting and playful colors, I highly recommend this set.

Great starter pack
Wasn't sure which ones to commit to in 15 ml tubes, so I ordered this one at very good price. Must say, the best color of all is the Rhodonite which is a hot pink or magenta and is supposed to not fade if exposed to light compared to the other pink pigments which usually do. Jadeite is also interesting, dark green with some dark sediment, but can probably be achieved with other color mixes, not sure. Amethyst is a little sparkly actually but not in a mica powdery way, very subtle, and a muted purple. Hematite is a lot like Lunar Black. I have them both and can't really see the difference, but lunar black is cheaper. The others are very nice, but the three stood out for me.

Daniel smith never disappoints, great quality and colour selection.
I love Daniel smith and this is a really good value these paints cost anywhere from $8-$20CAD each they really know how to make a great little starter set. It has a warm and cool red and yellow a cool pink and a warm red which makes it a great place to start. I would also recommend getting a Cobalt blue an Indigo and an Alizarin Crimson to give you a more complete pallette. Having a Burnt Umber and Burnt Sienna as well as a Yellow Ochre will really make your life easier and give you a perfect little limited pallette combined with this set.

Great value for money, highly recommended
This is a great value for money set of watercolours. I usually buy these separately but this is a great set of warm and cool primary colours that can be mixed into a huge variery of colours, ideal for travelling which this set is intended for, the tubes are only 5ml but the paints are very pigmented and a tiny amount goes a very long way, the tubes are made from sturdy metal with a little screw cap. I highly recommend Daniel smith paints, these really are the best quality paints you can buy.

Excellent quality from Daniel Smith...
Very attractive and unusual granulation. I bought these as my first trial of the highly acclaimed watercolours from Daniel Smith .... and yes, they are worth it Expensive, but only small amounts required for interesting slightly sparkly earthy effects!

High-pigment excellent paints
I've been using the student-grade Cotman paints by Winsor and Newton (tube and pan). They are fine, but I have noticed when I've tried to achieve some effects (even on Arches paper), they just won't do what I want. Won't disperse properly, etc. I was reluctant to spend still more on paints, but figured I could mix all of the colours I'd want with these *tiny* 5 ml tubes. I was shocked to find how pigmented these are, and really no longer discouraged by the size due to that. If you have been on the fence about whether to get these or the slightly lower-priced (at my local art shop) Cotman 12-pan set, just get these and skip the frustration.
