INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHANGING THE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE BELT ON A Z225 MOWER
INSTRUCTIONS FOR CHANGING THE HYDROSTATIC DRIVE BELT ON A Z225 MOWER Note: Photos, while uploaded in order, were reordered incorrectly by Amazon's software. Look through all of them and mentally rearrange them appropriately. This belt worked fine to replace my John Deere Z225 Mower’s original hydrostatic drive belt, which as you can see from one of my photos, was starting to show wear. Being unexperienced, it took me a little longer to replace the belt but when everything got said and done, I realize it probably could’ve been done in 10-20 minutes. I took photographs and a video showing how it can be done, but haven’t posted it yet on YouTube. Please note that this belt isn’t going to be as stretched out as the one you’re placing and so you will need to pull back the spring-tensioned pulley little bit farther back to get this new belt on than the distance you needed to get the old belt off. This belt is the proper new belt length. Tools needed: some mechanism for getting under the back end of the mower (a mower jack, ramps, etc.), two ratchet straps (also known as tie-down straps), and a small screwdriver to help release a connector and mount. No sockets, torque wrenches, etc., are needed. Use common sense, wear protective gloves (I like the Harbor Freight 9mm thick Nitrile gloves), eye protection, etc. See my photos for clarity. • Lift the backend of the mower up so you can access the bottom back side. I use a mower lift from Harbor Freight. • Use a ratchet strap to pull back the spring-loaded tensioner pulley for the hydrostatic drive belt, loosening the pressure on the old belt. • Use a second strap to pull back the spring-loaded tensioner pulley for the blade drive belt. • Disconnect the connector to the clutch on the bottom of the engine shaft and remove the cable mount from the chassis (or the clutch cable from the mount). • Remove the blade belt from the bottom drive pulley. Slip the old hydrostatic drive belt off the top pulley, around the clutch wire and the removed blade belt, and position the new one back into its place. • Using a large heavy-duty tie wrap, fasten the new belt to the old belt and use the old belt to pull the new belt forward into the mower guiding it into the proper locations. • There is enough clearance between the hydrostatic drive pulleys/fans on each side of the mower to slip the old belt over the top of the assembly. Note how you do it because you will need to reverse the process for the new belt. Slip the old belt off and over each hydrostatic drive pulley and the new belt into its place. Finish removing the old belt. Finish routing the new hydrostatic drive belt. • As the unstretched new belt is going to be shorter than the stretched out old belt, you will likely need to tighten the ratchet strap a bit to gain more clearance to get the new belt on the tensioner pulley. • Check your work (make sure the belt hasn’t slipped from any pulley or misrouted) and release the spring tension on that belt. • Place the blade belt back into position on the motor shaft pulley and reconnect the clutch wire. • Place the blade belt back on its tensioner pulley and release the spring tension on the blade belt. • Check your work. Lower mower to the ground. Set brake. Start mower engine and test. If you have found this review and these instructions helpful, please upvote this review or rate it as helpful.
