Tests the 7 pin socket as it should, except for the brake controller

Tested on a 2022 model truck. All functions tested accurately except the factory brake controller. The Tester did not simulate the trailer brakes, so the truck's circuitry would not recognize that a trailer was attached, and therefore would not activate the brake circuit. Other than the lights, proper operation of the brake controller is probably the most important piece of safety equipment when towing a large trailer. As a "tester," this gadget doesn't do anything more than what you could do with a multimeter and pin-out diagram.

Keeping it simple.

I picked up a used truck with what seemed to be a nice U-Haul towing package. I had to find out if it was actually in working order. I purchased this tester for its " plug and play " simplicity and I was not disappointed. Just read and follow the instructions to understand what the lights indicate, should there be a fault and your on your way to fixing any problems. Keep it in the glovebox for future use.

For what it does, it works just fine, but . . .

I purchased this tester to help diagnose why my RV trailer brakes weren't working. The tester indicated that the brake circuit was not getting power, meaning the fault was in the truck. What I didn't know was that apparently some late model trucks, including my GMC Sierra, won't activate the brake circuit unless the trailer is actually attached. Thus, this tester could not accurately diagnose the problem, because the truck circuitry would not let it do so. So be aware. Otherwise, the tester accurately displayed all other functions of the 7-Pin connector.

Doesn’t work with factory-installed brake controller

Bought to diagnose a trailer brake issue on a 2017 Chevy Silverado. On this and many other computer-controlled vehicles with factory trailer brake controllers the vehicle only sends brake voltage if it detects the resistance from the trailer brake system. The socket tester apparently does not mimic the resistance of a brake system, so the vehicle did not send a brake signal. I also tried it on a 2003 Silverado and it didn’t work on it either. I’ll keep the tester anyway, because it is a really handy way to test the functions of the trailer light circuits of the tow vehicle. On my vehicle it just does not work for testing the trailer brake circuit.

Does the job

It works perfectly. It feels a bit cheap and less than durable. It may last a lifetime but it seems like it could have been built more compactly and sturdy. That said, it was inexpensive so my expectations may be a little high for the price.

A very handy tool for diagnosing trailer issues.

I am a mechanic find myself diagnosing many trailer related issues on vehicles when in fact there really is no issue. I usually just grab a test light and touch the contacts in order to check, though many times i find myself leading a wire from the battery (power and ground) to the rear of the vehicle in order to check the lights properly. While it isn't hard, it's cumbersome and takes a while setting up. With this tool, it makes it 99% easier to grab and plug in and a quick check. Had a customer that came in saying the left side signal on the trailer was working but the right side didn't work. The customer plugged the trailer into a different vehicle and worked correctly. Connected this tool and found the brake lights and left signal worked but the right side didn't. Found a blown fuse and corrosion inside the socket. There was many of these to chose from, but this looking like the most basic and easy to read is why i picked it. There is 6 LED's (RT signal, LT signal, TM, 12V, BK, and BU). This tool doesn't allow you to load test the circuits just a visual of if there is power or not. Another thing i do wish was there was a swivel head so i can see it from the top, the LED's face the side. While it's not a big deal, i can read it either way. It's a quick simple tool to determine weather or not it's a issue with the vehicle or trailer. I like the fact it only takes a minute to check. I now no longer connect a test light to test other than testing if there is an issue. I am happy and would recommend if your a trailer owner.

Great Tester for 7way wiring

Bought this tester to be able to test and troubleshoot my RV 7way wiring to my toad. It works well and is easy to use. It makes the troubleshooting go so much faster and is a quick way to test the wiring before you hook up and drive away.. Small enough to fit into my overloaded toolbox, and is a great tool for the purpose.
