Good Value BUT needs better non-marking pads
The 20-Inch Shop Fox W1733A Downdraft Table works, sort of. Yes it does cut down on loose dust created when sanding (we're using a powerful Laguna C3 dust collector). The only real complaint is that the rubber feet which are great for providing a friction to hold a piece of wood for sanding also leave unsightly black marks that have to be re-sanded. Will try and modify with non-marking feet. This is a large table with ample room to work on and connects to a 4" hose so plenty of CFM to properly power this effectively is required, your shop-vac probably wouldn't work as well as a commercial grade, dedicated dust removal system.

Dust be gone? not exactly
I have a 1.5HP dust collector that pulls 1500CFM and has two 4" ports. The downdraft table is inset into a workbench, one of the 4" ports is connected to this, and the other can be used for secondary suction. I use this table for light sanding and also some chop-saw work when the weather isn't nice out. With something like this you always envision gobs of dust getting whisked away and ultra-clean air. However the reality is that when I'm sanding, the downdraft does help, but a thin layer of dust ends up across the room, and in my nostrils. It was this fine dust that I was hoping to be rid of. When chop-sawing, I put a large cardboard box over the table and put an additional 4" port in the box, and a bit of dust does escape, but the chop saw does stir up a bit of air movement so no surprise there. I do see little particles of dust being drawn to the table, however only the dust above the table. A bit of dust settles around the table and a bit of dust settles in between the vents so that when you're done you need to brush the table with the dust collector on.

Needs a 4" outlet to optimize performance
The table is a good work surface for sanding. However, the outlet size restricts airflow too much. Also, the use of a shop vac style vacuum with 2.5" hose cannot produce the air movement required to really make this style of table work (6.5HP 16 Gal unit is only 203CFM), mainly due to the large open area on the sanding surface. We modified the outlet by cutting the outlet and inserting a 4" duct connector, which we connected to an 800CFM dust collector. In addition we created an in-line filter to capture fine dust, which was connected directly to the back of the modified table, between it and the dust collector. The results were fantastic. 5 days of sanding plaster surfaces with not a trace of dust anywhere else in the room or surrounding surfaces. We used a low pressure air blower to occasionally blow the collected super fine dust through the internal channels and cleaned the in-line filter a couple times as well. Overall, no complaints about the tables general construction or quality... mostly about its design limitations.

It works decently.
I was having allergic reations to wood dust via handsanding. This really keeps the particualte out of the air. Combined with air filtration, I can still work in my shop! I use a 1hp Oasis wall mount dust collection system, and it pulls enough for this unit to work.

Underwhelming suction.
Bought this to sand large cosplay props. Hooked it up to a dust collector and it works okay but it should have the option of higher borders to catch airborne debris that don’t get immediately sucked up. So there is still a good amount of cleanup required of the surrounding area when I’m done.

Wait didn’t I just sand the black marks off that?
The auction is decent with a dust collection system, my problem is the little non slip rubber knobbies, they didn’t make them non marring. So after you sand you have to flip it over and sand again to remove black marks, which then leaves black marks on the other side, so you sand those, which then leaves black marks on the other side, I think you get my point. Basically they made a product and didn’t take the extra five minutes to try it out.

Great Sanding Table !!
I decided to purchase this sanding table Shop Fox W1733 20-Inch by 40-Inch Downdraft Sanding Table based on the positive reviews I read. Their statements were right on the money. This is a Great product. I'm really surprised at the quality of the table. It's Well-Built and sturdy and I'm sure it will last a life time. I tried using it with my shop vac with a 5 gallon separator attached, my results were poor. Just not enough "Suck" for this large table. I then attached the dust collector system and No More Dust! My suggestion would be: For use with a dust collector system only.. At the time I ordered April 2011 Amazon has the best price with their free shipping offer.

Adequate Suction = Clean Garage
The results you have with this table will depend on how much suction you have. First I tried using this with my shop-vac and had less than desirable results. It was ok (better than nothing) but not great using this combination. Then I hooked this up to my Delta 1,200 CFM dust collector and WOW! I sanded six tables in my garage using this downdraft table hooked up to my dust collector and there was not a trace of dust when I was done. I was also using a Dewalt random orbital sander with the dust collection attachment on that hooked up to the dust collector.
