Excellent work light
This is the best work light available. After receiving the first light I was so impressed I bought another and thinking about a third. I can even attach to my tractor for night time mowing. Other Coast products work great as well. The company has excellent customer service, a rarity in this world.

Durable and bright
Heavy and not compact, but bright as advertised and maybe then some.

Good performance with a couple of idiosyncrasies
I purchased this light after consistent good experiences with other Coast products (and quickly discovering that my old trusty halogen work lamps were much too hot for inside work in summer weather!). It is quite bright, exceeding expectations, and the quality of the light is excellent. My only wishes are 1) that it would charge while plugged in; and 2) that the main ball joint were just a little bit tighter. It will stay where you put it, but if it's working significantly against gravity, it's not especially tolerant of a jostle.

Good work light, but battery life below spec, maybe bad cell
12/5/22 Update: After maybe two dozen uses the battery life has dropped noticeably, from around 4.5 hours on high, good enough for 4.75 hour spec, down to 3 hours 18 minutes on high, maybe a cell is going bad or the cells aren't good quality, -1 star. For shorter task lighting this is still a good light but do not expect the batteries to hold up long term. For work site usage, I recommend lights which use power tool batteries, swapping batteries is so much faster and more convenient than stopping to recharge, and generic makes of name-brand batteries are better than they use to be, maybe better than this and easy to replace for however long the light is in service. Original Review (2 typos corrected): 11/2/22, 5 stars, Good work light Got this Coast CL40R Clamp Light in the hope of finally replacing my decades old AC clamp light after so many other work lights came up short. Build quality is great, the almost all heavy aluminum construction is well beyond what is typically called heavy duty, the few plastic parts are much thicker than other heavy duty lights, and the heavy springs provide an impressive amount of clamping force. This light could last for years in professional use, or decades in home use, maybe even a family heirloom, except li-ion cells don't last that long, so I opened up it to see what's inside. The battery pack is a bundle of 4x 18650 cells, 7.4V 5Ah, not bad but not impressive, and fairly easily to replace. Functionality is good, surpasses expectations, really I just reviewed another work light claiming 5000 lumen and this 3900 lumen light is brighter with a similar light cone. My Lycebell LC-881E light meter says max readings are 18.8k lux at 1ft, 679 lux at 5ft, 185 lux at 10ft, 70 lux at 15ft, and 32 lux at 20ft (that 5k lumen light was 13.4k at 1ft, 534 at 5ft, 148 at 10ft, 58 at 15ft, 27 at 20ft). This does have Chip-On-Board (COB) style range limitations, the light disperses rapidly, but the lens reduces glare and produces a nicer more uniform light cone. Two gripes with the design: No tension adjustment on the ball joint, it moves around too easily as-is which will only get worse over time as use wears on the ball socket, eventually it may flop about lame. No magnets, seems every work light out there has a magnet so I've kind of come to expect it, and notice it when its missing. Mod idea, ball tension: Install a tension screw in the side of the ball joint. Something like, disassemble the joint, drill a ~1/4 hole in the side of the ball socket, hot tap in a 1/4x1in bolt, or maybe one on each side, and adjust as needed. Might be better to use nylon bolts. Might help to reinforce the area surrounding the hole(s), fill those little rib structures with epoxy, without epoxying the bolt(s). Mod idea, magnets: Some combination of epoxy and neodymium magnets on each end of the bottom clamp, maybe with some thin nylon webbing wrap, or maybe a couple bar markets with brackets and bolts. Packaging is a retail box. Price point is good for this kind of build quality. The included USB-A-C cable is high quality cloth wrapped. Overall, 5 stars, good work light. Hope that helps, thanks for reading, and thanks to Amazon for the free work light to review.

Great light, slightly over-priced
This is actually a great light; wide-and-bright, with a unique USB-C charging input and USB-A output. The clamp is outstanding, opening to 3" (requiring both hands to squeeze), with a fully-adjustable swivel head. The light starts off very strong, but grows weaker as the battery diminishes. I like everything about this light except the price. For reference, I compared this COAST light against my tried-and-true Milwaukee 2361-20 M18 light with a 5.0AH battery installed; performance was very similar: - Coast is blue-white, Milwaukee is more natural yellow-white - Coast can be positioned much better than Milwaukee - Coast gets much hotter during use than Milwaukee - Fully-charged Coast runs 4hr32min, Milwaukee with 5.0AH runs 5hr-2min - Coast takes about 12-hours to recharge using USB-A cord, Milwaukee is instant swap - Coast high-and-low brightness is similar to Milwaukee high-and-low - Coast brightness noticeably diminishes as battery runs down, Milwaukee is constant brightness - Coast seems better-protected against rain (with charger door closed) than Milwaukee - Coast has nice packaging and really-nice USB-A to USB-C charger cord I can tell you that I've dropped my Milwaukee over 10' vertically, tumbled it down a flight of stairs, welded in close-proximity to the light, and this stupid thing just keeps taking a beating. I'm not sure I'll be able to report similar abuse longevity with this Coast, but most of its design seems really sturdy. I'll buy another Coast CL40R if it ever goes on sale.

A very good light
A very bright light, a very stable light, a very durable light, a very directable light, a very versatile light—the list could go on. Yet, for many, this light is not a very practical light. It’s too heavy to carry comfortably on one’s person or person-powered conveyances. The clamshell clamp, which distinguishes this light from the others in this class, is too large and strongly sprung to be opened without two handed effort. For all the overkill on the size and tightness of the clamp jaws, they lack traction to many smooth surfaces. It lacks a simple small hook from which to hang it overhead of from a belt or pack. It comes with a long cord, USB A to C, for recharging of sustained operation, but nowhere to store it on the lamp and no transformer to adapt it to the single most common power outlet. Though rechargeable, it lacks the most rapid way to extend power—interchangeable battery packs. This is an expensive light, and though not so compared to many of similar capabilities, enough to not make it a casual purchase. This light is surely worthy of consideration—thoughtful consideration. For some this will be a 5 star product, but I find enough limitations to make it rank a bit lower for me.
